View Full Version : Favourite PC Tournament

Well, I've done Favourite NPC Tournament (Redcloak) and Favourite Character Tournament (Vaarsuvius), so when people started posting lists in the main thread this seemed like the natural response. Quick and easy this time, just rank your favourite PCs from 1-6, and when the votes stop coming in I'll tally them. 1st gets 5 points, 2nd gets 4 points, 3rd gets 3 points and so on. :smallcool:

Example
1: Haley
2: Roy
3: Elan
4: Vaarsuvius
5: Durkon
6: Belkar

This is hard. Roy and Durkon used to be my least favorites, but over the last 50 strips or so I've come to appreciate both characters much more. Durkon's death scene was great, and so is the Durkula development. Meanwhile, it's been refreshing to see Roy treating his team properly. So, beyond V being my favorite, my list is fairly arbitrary. I like them all.

1. V
2. Elan
3. Haley
4. Durkon
5. Roy
6. Belkar

2. Belkar
3. Haley
4. Elan
5. Roy
6. Durkon

The only one I'm sure about is the #1 spot, though. Belkar used to be lower, but I quite like his recent character development, and Vampire Durkon is interesting. Also, I'm not sure if I'd really rate Elan over Roy... But yeah, I'll stick with this, I think.

Ha!

Anyway, making a list like this is hard for me, because my mind-set tells me that what's on the bottom of the list is something that's disliked, even though that's not the case. I like all the main characters fairly equally, but if I have to make a list it would probably be:

1. Elan
2. Roy Greenhilt
3. Vaarsuvius
4. Durkon Thundershield
5. Belkar Bitterleaf

I'm saddened that Blackwing isn't a viable option (totally #3 for me), but this is the Favourite PC tournament, so that's fair.

2. Durkon
3. Haley

6. V

EDIT: I just realized that unless this voting process involves multiple tiers, it's less of a tournament and more of a (hopefully) friendly all-out brawl

Until very recently, I'd have ranked Durkon above Elan, but Elan's been great these past ~20 strips, whereas Durkon has mostly been a creepy vampire that stands around. Yeah, standing around is what Durkon has mostly done for the entire strip, but at least he was a lovable dwarf back then.

I don't like V for several reasons. There's the genocide, for one. Another reason is that I think his/her punchlines are among the weakest in the comic. (V punchlines I do like: "Apparently." (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0397.html) and "And that would be wrong." (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0696.html)) But the biggest reason is this (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0597.html). What a prick.

So...are you going to have eliminations and runoffs after this initial round? Note that runoffs would not require a second voting period, since the first voting period includes people's complete rankings, so you can simply recount with the eliminated characters removed from each list.
'cause otherwise the results will be a lot less accurate unless you switch to a different tallying system (e.g., use the votes to generate an all-vs-all tournament and take the eigenvector centralities of each node...)
and having a perfectly accurate representation of the forum's favorite PC is very important.

Actually, come to think of it, the fact that people are listing their complete ranking of choices means that almost any voting system can be tallied with just one ballet round, so if you don't want to, I'll probably reevaluate which PC wins under several different scoring systems, using the same votes:smalltongue:

1: Belkar Bitterleaf: Why? Because he's FUN.
2: Elan: Altough I don't get all his puns, he's also fun to see
3: Durkula: The Dwarfen Bearded Vampiric Bat Holding a Staff rocks
4: Vaarsuvius: I like him/her, because the giant needs a ton of plot points to stop him/her to resolve the situation casting the right spell
5: Haley Starshine: An interesting character, but low in the jokes department. She worked well while in charge of Belkar, but from now...
6. Roy Greenhilt: He's somewhat bland. Only managed to put a smile in my face when the girdle of masculinity/feminity made him a bald woman and he complained... and when the "Soft Sand" part.

So far...

Making this list was really the first time I thought about who my favorite would be. I tend to think of OOTS as an ensemble. Some of my answers surprised me.

1) :haley:
2) :durkon: (Durkula has given him a MASSIVE boost)

Straight up party rating - that's harder than the favorite character tournament. I like the ensemble effect. Fine.

1. Belkar
2. Roy (surprising - I voted against him for Malack so often...)
3. Vaarsuvius
4. Haley
5. Durkon (could easily surpass Haley, but body of work to date, Haley wins)
6. Elan

ChristianSt

So probably the "smartest" vote for me would be simple:

1: :belkar:

He is just simple my favourite PC by a far far margin, but since I'm not a fan of "vote-manipulating" I'm not doing the smart thing (and Belkar would certainly not do the smart thing. He probably would just go after oppyu for making such a tournament and not just saying he is the favourite PC :smalltongue:)
So a second try would be:

1: :belkar:
2: :elan:
3: :haley:

It is much harder to find a second place, and if you ask me again in a few weeks (or a few weeks before this :smallwink:), I might probably just switch Elan and Haley. But currently Elan wins - maybe just because he is the reason that Julio is in the comic, who is really awesome, too?
Hm, wait,... that still isn't the complete Order :smallfrown:. Now comes the really tricky part. While all characters are great, compared to the top 3, I don't really care about the rest. So my final standings would be:

1: :belkar:
2: :elan:
3: :haley:
4: :vaarsuvius:
5: :durkon:
6: :roy:

But the latter could probably switch daily, so assigning different numbers to them feels a bit weird.

:belkar: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . :elan: . . :haley: . . . . . . . . . . . . :vaarsuvius::durkon::roy:

My suggestion, were oppyu to ask for it which of course oppyu has not, would be to average the number of the uncast votes and give it to everyone not-voted-for.

So that, for example, if someone voted for Durkon and Elan and no one else, Roy, Vaarsuvius, Belkar, and Haley would all be counted as having come in place 4.5.

Though it would add a bit of time to the tabulation, that is an elegant solution. (And in this instance I might change my vote to Vaarsuvius and no one else, because my level of attachment to the rest of the Order is fairly uniform.)

Though forcing everyone to pick all 6 is just as reasonable, and is in fact what oppyu did request in the OP.

1.):vaarsuvius:Vaarsuvius.
Amongst the Order, only Haley even comes close to the androgynous purple-haired wonder-elf.
2.):haley:Haley Starshine.
Sneaky, rational, sensible and funny.
3 :durkon: Durkon Thundershield.
I don't take Durkula into account when considering this. I agree with Belkar; he's not Durkon. Durkon was, I think, unfairly maligned as a flat character - he had plenty of opportunity for fleshing out and development.
4.):elan:Elan.
Choosing between Roy, Elan and Durkon was very difficult, but I think I have to go with Durkon>Elan>Roy, especially based on Elan's recent development.
5.):roy:Roy Greenhilt.
I really like Roy, but he occasionally comes off as just a little bit too harsh.
6.):belkar:Belkar Bitterleaf.
I've never understood the vast affection Belkar commands. Certainly, he has some excellent quotations, can be enjoyable, and is beginning to become a touch more interesting, but fundamentally, he's still a sadistic, mass-murdering, ignorant, callous little bugger.

Like he says (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0610.html), he's the only funny thing left in this damn comic strip. We can enjoy his hilarity from the comfort and safety of our chairs. Plus, he seems to respect animals way more than people -- and I bet lots of people share that opinion.

#1. Elan: I'm a huge Elan fan. From turning me onto the Bard class to the first time to making me see how a low-Intelligence character could be entertaining to roleplay, Elan's taught me a lot.

#2.Vaarsuvius: V's wit tends to be similar to my own, so his jokes and burns get me more often than most of the cast.

#3. Belkar: Belkar's just bleeding funny.

#4. Roy: Nothing at all against Roy, I love Roy. His leadership's great when he exhibits it (like he has during this arc) and I enjoy seeing him use his head. I only rank him a bit below Belkar, really, and a lot of Belkar's points with me he's earned during this arc.

#5. Durkon: All of me says Haley should be here, but I just can't justify it. Durkon's straight-lacedness somehow has him more endeared to me than the rogue.

#6. Haley: Even writing her in last place makes me feel bad. She rounds out a cast of astounding characters, so it's not as though I dislike her; Haley's just the least loved of the main posse to me.

They wax and wane, and I can't help that the number 5 and 6 spots are the "unfavorites." I don't have any unfavorites. Hell, I don't think there's a character I've disliked beyond Tarquin in his more obsessive Villainy moments where he was fighting the Order recently.

Can I vote them all for the same place? :smallnervous:

If we were discussing "trend-setters" I would have to say Roy, Elan, and Belkar, but favorites?

Giant have mercy on my poll.

I've never understood the vast affection Belkar commands. Certainly, he has some excellent quotations, can be enjoyable, and is beginning to become a touch more interesting, but fundamentally, he's still a sadistic, mass-murdering, ignorant, callous little bugger.

Well, That's the same we could say about THE TERMINATOR. (Save for the "Little Bugger" part) and everybody loves THE TERMINATOR.

R.I.P Zz'dtri. You'll always be the best the LG ever had in my opinion. 'Tis a shame you weren't defeated by V in an epic battle of wizards. Zz'dtri, LG? He never was Lawful Good!

In fact, the sentence doesn't make much sense if you substitute "lawful good" for LG. :smalltongue:

1. :belkar: Great lines, twisted logic, and strangely loyal. Love it.
2. :haley: She's got a few good lines as well.
3. :elan: Entertaining if nothing else.
4. :durkon: The ongoing tree gags are amusing, but that's about it. Too lawful for my tastes.
5. :roy: Would be last if I didn't loathe V so much. He's just too bland.
6. :vaarsuvius: I loathe V. I know V has a lot of love and support from the community, but I loathe him/her.

1. :durkon: Was my favourite from the start. A little cliche and he has very few 'moments' but I really like has character as a whole in every arc.

2.:haley: Haley is also a character who never has a turn in the spotlight. Which is a shame because I think that again she has a really interesting personality and backstory.

3.:vaarsuvius: I love everything the elf says, and he/she/it has had a few great moments and arcs dedicated to him/her His/her continued ambiguity is also a great touch. I didn't even realise there was any questioning over her gender for the first 300 strips.

4 :belkar: Not a great character, but he has some great one-liners and his recent companionship with Mr. Scruffy has proved to be a great and interesting relationship that creates a possible alignment change and gradual character development

5. :roy: Roy is a good character, with lots of great lines, but his flaw i that he is the protagonist. Like all true protagonists he has to hold the team together and this stops him from achieving his true greatness, at least in my opinion.

6. :elan: I'll admit that he has had lots of great moments, especially near the beginning of the strip but his character development into a mature dashing swordsman leaves him the only character where I wish there wasn't any.

This is difficult. Not only because these are all good characters, but because the word 'favourite' is large enoigh to encompass competing definitions and responses. The character I want to see more of would probably be Belkar (still the funniest PC in a story that bills itself as comedy-action-adventure), but he is also the character I least admire/would want to meet in Real Life. V has probably had the most interesting arc so far, but Durkon's promises to be good going forward; and once again, it is far easier to admire the latter than the former.

Ok enough waffle.

1. Belkar. A horrible, despicable, evil little psycho. He is not in the least redeemed as a person by the fact he is Comedy Gold, and only marginally by the fact that he Has A Cat. But he is the most entertaining of the main cast, IMO.
2. V. I really love her verbose-ness, and Meaty Character Development.
3. Haley. A good all-rounder; has some good lines, some good development, and some nice Heroine Moments, without anything about her that I don't like.
4. Roy. Suffers a little by being often given the Straight Man job, but has some good snarky moments.
5. Elan. I really really like Elan, and he is the character I most want to see Live to Tell the Tale. But...well, I don't find his zany antics/stupidity that funny, and the whole Banjo the Clown things tends to leave me cold.
6. Durkon. Might wll move up the list after the story is finished, but yeah. he's had the least attention paid to him to date, and it shows. He's not a bad character, but I hope his most interesting moments are still to come.

Yes, in shocking news, the winner of the Favourite Character Tournament also won the Favourite PC Tournament. Elan scored slightly better on 1st and 2nd place votes, but Vaarsuvius won more 3rd place votes to make up the difference. Belkar kept up with the top two in 1st place votes, but being a 'love them or hate them' character hurts in a preferential voting system where people who hate him can place him last, and very few people seem to hate Roy.

Someone had previously mentioned trying these rankings with an instant runoff voting method. I was curious so I plugged them into this site (http://www.ericgorr.net/condorcet/), which can do a few different types.

Assuming I got the data right, it looks like Elan wins with all methods there, beating V 29 to 27 (27 to 26 with only the ballots from when the results were posted). The algorithms are a bit different, but for the ones that eliminate one per round, the ranking (reverse elimination order) would look like:
1. Elan
2. Vaarsuvius
3. Belkar
4. Haley
5. Roy
6. Durkon

Here's the ballot info I used if anyone wants to play around with it on the site I mentioned earlier:

I'm pleased to announce the Favourite Panel Tournament! For the next 933 weeks, we will go strip by strip, finding the favourite panel of each strip! Then for the next 93 week, we will find the favourite panel in each group of ten strips! Then 10 weeks for the 'best of the hundred' panels, and then finally a grand finale! Provided that the Giant stops producing strips now, it should only take 20 years to finish.

It's hardly inevitable. Elan was one voter away from taking this one away from V. I recall that V had a very close match-up or two (maybe against Redcloak?) in the favorite character tournament, also.
