View Full Version : How do you feel about the Meditant requirements

Here's the supplements in question:
Meditant Class (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/psm/20040827c)
Required Feats (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/psm/20040827b)

The Meditant requires 9 ranks in Concentration, meaning it requires a level 6 character. Why? With a few exceptions, most PrC's which have a skill rank requirement leave it at 8, allowing you to begin the class at level 6. Is that necessary? I feel like the requirement should be shifted down to 8 for the sake of symmetry with PrC's in general. If the playground disagrees, please let me know why you think it should with entry at CL 7+

1)
Since it was designed without Unearthed Arcana's variant rules in mind, the 4 feat prerequisites should point to it being intended for 7th level entry. The skill rank prerequisite merely confirms this intention.

2)
Since when have PrCs had a consistent pattern of entry levels? Lots of them are not intended for 6th level entry (some before like Master Specialist, and some afterwards like Eternal Blade).

3)
One reason for the 7th level entry is so the Etheral ability could happen at 8th class level (intended ECL 15)

As Oldtrees1 said,, given the sheer number of feats it requires, that 6th-level might end up being necessary anyway.

If you're interested in the Meditant, check out my handbook (one of the first I ever did).

Psyren, I did read your handbook, it was great.

As far as requirements, yes, most of them do seem to line up with 6th level requirement in my experience (it's totally possible that I have some skewed perspective though). I would argue that the feat requirement isn't as leading as it might seem at first, since the main classes used for entry would be psion and psychic warrior, both of whom get enough bonus feats to make it by then.

The Etheral at ECL 15 is something I hadn't considered though. Is 15 the normal level to pick that up?

Thanks for the insights guys, you guys gave me some good arguments for why the requirements are the way they are.

Etheral Jaunt: 7th level, 1rd/cl, You
Etheralness: 9th level spell, 1min/cl, You+1/3cl
Etheral class feature: Unlimited duration, You

Sure they do, but that leaves little room for things like Psionic Meditation, a Psicrystal, Metapsionics or Expanded Knowledge, so 6 is a reasonable way to make sure you can get something other than Psychic Meditation and DPM before entering. Also, Ardents might be interested in the class too and they get no bonus feats.

Ethereal Jaunt is typically at 13 but lasts a much shorter time than what you can do, so a better comparison might be Extended EJ which would be on par with this.

Cool, thanks for the comparisons guys. Magic durations are definitely one of the weak spots in my DnD knowledge.
