One of guys had a question and I havent really touched the Spelljammer stuff in A LOOOONg time.

How do SR convert to MPH or something inside the atmo of a planet?

We run on a FR campaign for example...how fast does SR5 take you from Waterdeep to Hillsfar?

Suggestions? Direction?

5 seconds of Google gave me this (http://www.spelljammer.org/rules/fastplay2e.html).

A spelljammer rating of 1 is 500 yards per round, or about 17 miles per hour. So multiply your SR by 17 for your ship's air speed (about 85 mph for SR 5). Or calculate the time it takes to escape the planet's gravity well and double it. That's the time it takes to reach any point on the globe from any other point. At least as far as Rules as Written goes.

For more Spelljammer discussion, head over to the Piazza (http://www.thepiazza.org.uk/bb/index.php). Big Mac is particularly friendly, and some of those who helped develop Spelljammer hang out there.

For even more fun crack open your DMG and cross reference the rules for weather. Check the wind speeds of hurricanes and realize that flying through still air at low SJ speeds is the same as being in major wind storm.

The information that Lord Torath gave is what's actually in the original box set. The link is to "community-created" material. The intro on that page says it's not intended to replace the original rules but I think it most definitely adds to what was actually given (unless all that about speed limits and saves was in some supplement that I don't recall and I had a LOT of the Spelljammer stuff at one point).

Thanks all.

Thinking about the wind/weather concerns...I use super heavy hammerships and I doubt they will be too too effected by simple winds.

Adamantite frames and plates...full covered. Am I off track with that thinking?

There isn't much on the ship thats "soft"...

I suppose it depends on how many men are manning each "fin". A strong enough "breeze" could exert quite a force on those. And who's on deck.

Do note that ships without sails or rigging tend to suffer in maneuverability. The ship's hull may not be damaged by the high winds but any rigging will be torn away.

It's not a big thing for the bigger ships made of metal or stone. It's the lighter ships like the helmed galleys and longships that (ought to) get really hosed.

Reminds me of ramming a dwarven asteroid ship into a planet for some reason.

Ha. I found something I recall being slightly relevant. An xkcd what-if question about wind speeds.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Spelljammer ships are surrounded by an envelope of air (or else the crew would pass out and suffocate/freeze to death long before the ship left the atmosphere) which has traditionally been taken to read that it also protects the ship from "normal" atmospheric conditions. Now if your flying through a tornado all bets are off....
