View Full Version : Eldritch Claws... With Claws!

Let's say your natural weapons are claws (e.g. as a result of being a Warshaper). If you use Eldritch Claws, do you add your claw damage to the damage dealt, or do you still only do unarmed damage?

(Or, is it impossible to use Eldritch Claws when you have real claws?)

If you get two copies of the same natural weapon on the same limb, the one with highest damage (or arguably the one that was last applied) takes precedence. You don't get both, and there's no mechanic that would add them together.

Even though Eldritch Claws are a magic effect that do both the normal Eldritch Blast damage and (normally) your unarmed Strike Damage as well?

Yeah, why would that matter? They deal your unarmed strike damage, that has nothing to do with any claws you might have.

Because, if you have claws, then you have claw damage instead of unarmed strike damage. :smalltongue:

So, I wondered if that got added, instead of unarmed strike damage.

No, it does not work. Could make for a reasonable houserule, tho.

No, you don't. Claws and Unarmed Strikes are completely different weapons. You can use both in the same full attack, even. Saying that you have claw damage instead of unarmed strike damage is like saying that if you own a longsword and a dagger, you have longsword damage instead of dagger damage, so every ability that modifies your use of daggers should also apply to longswords.

You might be right, but your argument makes no sense in this context.

Claws and Unarmed Strikes are indeed different, but you seem to be missing the point. Normally, you have magic claws surrounding your fists - so when you hit an enemy you deal the damage from your magic claws, and also the damage from your fists (since you're still physically hitting them).

Now, imagine that you have claws instead of fists - and eldritch claws around those. In this case, as above, you're still hitting the enemy with both your eldritch claws and your 'real' claws.

Your analogy is completely nonsensical, and irrelevant to the argument I'm making.

Your argument is not based in any way shape or form in the rules of the game. It may make some sense and be suitable form a houserule but it is not how the game actually work.

Just get beast strike if you really want to add your claws to eldritch claws.

That's not how it works, though. If it was, then "on hit with an unarmed strike" effects would trigger, for example. The fact that your eldritch claws deal unarmed strike damage is just how their size happens to scale with your physical size and skill, it's not directly because you hit them with your fists.

Ah, I see. That makes more sense, thanks.
