So if I have a goblin (CR1/3) and I give it a +1 CR template, what does the resultant CR become? I remember reading that if you were to follow a linear scale of CR, CR1/2 becomes essentially CR 0, CR1/3 becomes CR -1, CR1/4 becomes CR -2, so following that logic, CR1/3 (-1) would become CR 1/2 (0)?

I might be completely wrong though, it might instead go up to CR1+1/3, but I have no idea how to calculate xp for something like that

I think CR 1 is okay. Perhaps it is not mentioned because CR 1,333 = 1 because fractions are always rounded down.

Since you're presumeable making this calculation for XP purposes, maybe you should just make it what seems most right to you? My initial instinct is the same as yours, though. 1/3 +1 becomes ½.

I always assumed a +1 CR template improves CR by one "step". For CR 1+ that always means one more integer, but for lower than CR 1 it means it's improved by one step up. For example, a CR 1/4 creature that gains a +1 CR template (assuming it qualifies as most templates have set minimum CRs or limiters) becomes a CR 1/3 creature. Realize that a CR 1/4 creature (such as a rat or raven) still isn't going to be worth a CR 1 encounter even if you put a +2 CR template on it. It's still a rat.

Well yeah, because at that point you've added enough steps for it to reach CR 1 (and then go further). Having a "it's a rat" penalty to CR makes sense regardless of how many templates you put on it.
