View Full Version : Gallifreyan Writing

Okay. Since the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who just passed and I'm currently playing around with Inkscape, I thought I'd go back to Gallifreyan Writing. Based on what is shown on TV, a fan made a Gallifreyan Alphabet and a system of writing that is quite different from any other writing system I know and quite beautiful.
There's an online generator, but it isn't perfect and I quite like writing in Gallifreyan myself, as well as changing the style and colours a bit. So, I've started doing it myself in Inkscape.

Example:

That's a sentence, namely "Gilgamesh is played by Eldan", which I wrote down since, well, I'm playing a character called Gilgamesh in a game and was thinking of him.

If anyone wants to, I'll write words or very short sentences (5, 6 words max) in Gallifreyan for them. It still takes me some time, though I expect as I get a bit more experience and have finished words and letters lying around, it will speed up.

While circular Gallifreyan bugs me as a writing system, I do still think it looks cool and I do admit curiosity as what my username would like written in it. Of course, now I feel like asking for a particular word, but that's just cruel on my part, though it would help to test the limitations of the system. But if I wanted to know that, I'd learn to do it myself so as not to waste anyone else's time.
So, could you please give my username a try? Alternatively, if you want something longer, you can give "The Inevitable Angel" a try.

My personal headcannon (yes, cannon. Not a typo at all. I did that on purpose!) is that it is the Gallifreyan equivalent of illuminated calligraphy and they have shorthand, too.

Anyway. Coloured after your avatar:

The sentence will take some more time, I'll do that later.

Also, what is that particularly difficult word? I'd like to see it, if only to plug it into the generator and see it cry.

I'm running an Age of Worms game soon, and I'm basing the Wind Dukes somewhat on the Time Lords... could you do 'Icosial' 'Miska the Wolf-Spider' 'Queen of Chaos' and 'Zosiel'. I hope that's not too many! :P anyway, its a challenge. Zosiel and Miska would be the most important...

Brilliant idea with the Wind Dukes.

Ohh, this looks cool. What about "The Mage Kalrany Jasterfeld"? I would love to see that! :)

Edit: oh, and if you have color prefs, purple in some aspect. Green is another nice color, but whatever you like with pruple would be great.

Thanks! Writing out a name like that is pretty intimidating. I thought I'd use it for some of the 'personal glyphs' in the tomb. Its nice to have hand-outs :)

Can you do one saying "Nira Tyr, Knight of Terrakion"? The color scheme should be dark brown and gray, kind of "rocky."

I always figured that they would have a more regular way of writing things as well. After all, any system of writing that requires a compass, protractor and ruler takes too much effort in my mind. Though, then again, they are Gallifreyans, and they likely have a good public education system. Still, it would take much practice before one could abandon the aforementioned tools and still get it neat.

Awesome. I actually expected the second to look much more complex than that, but then, it makes sense that it shouldn't be too complex either as the character who bears that moniker is in fact the personification of some pretty fundamental concepts.
Are you up for recolouring them if I ask nicely?

Also, what is that particularly difficult word? I'd like to see it, if only to plug it into the generator and see it cry.

Uhh... I think its particular difficulty would likely rise from its length. However, if you still want to know, the word in question was antidisestablishmentarianism. I have always wondered about its ability to render a significantly long word, but I realise that that is an exercise in madness, so I didn't suggest it earlier.

Miska the Wolf spider:

Okay, that is really cool.
And not just because I've identified which symbols represent the word "The" and remembered that Circular Gallifreyan is read anticlockwise starting at the bottom.

I may a really long request later. A variation of one of my favourite quotations from Shakespeare, but as mentioned, it is really long.

Just a beautiful word I came about: Queen.

Sure. That takes about twenty seconds with Inkscape.

antidisestablishmentarianism

Oh, wow. I never thought of that.

A-n-ti-di-se-s-ta-b-li-sh-me-n-ta-ri-a-ni-s-m.

18 syllables, by my count. The generator can still handle it, by the way, but I'm not drawing that.

http://imageshack.com/a/img854/2413/8qub.png

Doesn't look too elegant, really. Too much empty space in the middle.

On the other hand, this is a nice arrangement:

Antidisestablishmentarianism is too long for this.

Excellent. Just give me a second... Could the first be recoloured to black lines with a background the same shade of grey as the coat of this pony?
http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u389/Aether_Elemental/MyAvatars/ElementalPony21_zpsf42164c4.png
The colour of said coat in (r,g,b) is (113,113,113).

And in the second, could the blue of the background be darkened considerable and the lines be made silver?

Also, while I don't forget... Could you, using the original colour scheme of the first which you based off my avatar, try the word Emmental? As in the kind of cheese?

Twelve by my count, but then we've got completely different accents. In any case, for such a long word, I think it would likely be broken into smaller sections with each section written on a circle smaller than the last, but concentric with it. However, I fear that would simply result in it becoming too busy.
As aforementioned, trying to draw it is madness, so I didn't really expect you to.

Also, ignore the Shakespearean quote thing I mentioned, I can't find the damn thing and I can't remember which of his plays it was from.

Hmm... It appears to be perfectly fine when used in a sentence... Strange.

Gallifreyan syllables, not English ones. Syllables are either a single consonant, consonant+next vowel or single vowel, if two vowels follow after each other. Each syllable is then one of the sub-circles of the word.

So, in The Inevitable Angel:

The I-ne-vi-ta-b-le A-nge-l.

Ah... A written syllable, not a spoken one. Silly me. That will aid considerably in my attempts to understand just what's going on in these things. After all, there's only so much one can learn just by looking at something.
And thank you kindly for those recolours.
