View Full Version : Where can I find D&D miniatures?

Does anyone know where I can find specific miniatures for some remotely reasonable price?
Specifically, I need a handful of gnolls and orcs, about 15 hobgoblins and goblins, a Gargantuan red dragon, and a bunch of dwarven warriors and clerics, for some price less than 20 dollars. Or is the even possible?

:annoyed:

Check your FLGS?

You are not going to find the Gargantuan Red Dragon for less than $20. That figure is in far too high demand for it, and it's original MSRP was above $20 to begin with.

Didn't think so. I'll just have to buy some clay and paint.

Friendly Local Gaming Store.

Reaper Mini's Bones collection is extremely cheap. they are unpainted white plastic minis where you could get everything you are asking for short of the dragon for under $20. Getting minis larger than huge however will always be expensive. My best recommendation is buy a generic plastic toy dragon to get to that level of scale.

FLGS: friendly local game store. Although I often slip in an expletive in my head... If you don't know where any would be, call comic shops in the area, those are usually easier to google than a game store, or hobby shop. Hobby Lobby and similar chains are also good places to start. Ask for miniatures. Games Workshop is good too, although their stuff is more expensive and tends to be more intensive on the build/paint side of miniature hobbies because they don't have any official RPG's.

If you can't find anything you like or which is convenient, wizards.com and reaperminiatures.com are great. I love reaper's stuff, and they're fairly quick about shipping and great about responding to email queries. There are hundreds of other third party sites, you can google miniatures, DnD and related things, you're looking for 28mm scale as standard, although anywhere from 25-32 works for DnD.

Ebay can be a bargain, especially if all you want are multiple identical mooks that were commonplace in the miniature sets.

Craigslist likely has listings, as will kijiji. I don't really use craigslist, but kijiji (ebay classifieds in the US) often has bulk lots of minis that people are trying to get rid of when real life gets in the way of fun.

The site miniaturemarketplace.com has a huge variety of mini's from tons of different manufacturers, so again as said, minus the dragon you should find what your looking for at a pretty reasonable price.

Dragons are friggen expensive; my local gaming store has a colossal red sitting in the back which I would do some pretty terrible things for. Only thing is, the owner is more of a collector and never sells at a decent price, I think its like $300+.

EDIT: Also, look at the 4th ed modules; one is wrath of ashardalon that comes with some cool PC's, orcs, dwarves, kobolds and misc other stuff and a huge red for 50 ish bucks. Actually not a bad deal really. Plus theres dungeon tiles, so if that's your thing....

Could also check amazon.com. I ordered a mini for my a githzerai I was making once, think it only cost me about $3.

Make your own. These ones are vaguely OOTS-ish, too.

I used cardstock to make mine stand up a little better. (http://iheartprintandplay.blogspot.com/p/downloads.html)

I'll second printing out paper minis for bosses, since I assume your party won't be facing gargantuan red dragons all of the time.

My DM bought a bunch of defunct board games for the minis. They aren't always the same size, but work well for mooks.

Actually, my party will be fighting a gargantuan red dragon more often than you'd think, because I have one as a major recurring villain in my campaign. The wizard already got incinerated, and the cleric can't cast resurrection spells yet, so they're looking for a 9th-level cleric, with quite little luck. MWAHAHA.

To further the idea of cardstock minis, I've recently invested in the Pathfinder Pawns and have been suitably impressed for the price. Do take note that they only accommodate up to huge monsters though.

I re-purpose my two 60lb crates of old legos (Unfortunately, Bionicle characters don't quite work for DnD) for miniatures. All but the most exotic of creatures are possible with those darn plastic blocks.

I will second the endorsement of the PF pawns box if your looking for cheap, en-mass minis.

Question, anyone know how to properly spell en-mass.

Pretty sure it's "en masse".

wow, I just looked up what it would cost for the Big Red Dragon, cheapest I could find was 350$
I think it was 60$ brand new, don't remember, glad I got one when I did
sadly mines not mint in box anymore, I wanted to play with it, LOL

You can get the PF gargantuan green dragon for about $40 and just repaint him red.

Yeah, they are NOT cheap, and I don't exactly have the disposable income to be throwing out that much for a single figurine.

Looks badass though.

As many pointed out, the dragon itself is worth much more than 20$ on its own. That being said, the best place to get D&D minis (and Pathfinder, for that matter, and many others) is CoolStuffInc.com (http://www.CoolStuffInc.com).

While the "mint in box" Colossal Red Dragon cost an actual mint...there ARE alternatives that are just as good (http://www.ebay.com/bhp/d-d-red-dragon), if not better.

You can also pick up cheap minis from NobleKnightGames.com, though I always order in huge bulks since the shipping is so expensive.

As for the Dragon... no. The big miniatures are quite expensive, understandably so, when you consider what goes into making it. I picked up the Gargantuan Black Dragon at GenCon this year, and it cost me something like 60 bucks. But it is a beauty with excellent craftsmanship.

There might be somewhere on the net where you can find the old third edition cut-out tiles for dragons. I know they go all the way up to Colossal since we have them.

trollandtoad, coolstuffinc, coolminiornot, ebay, amazon, lots of places have miniatures, and those are just a fraction.

You may want to look into the board games from wizard of the coast, you get a fair amount of miniatures for a set price and a way better deal than trying to buy singles most of the time.

You can land quite a lot of the larger/huge miniatures by doing this for a fair price, but you do have to paint them. These use the exact d&d mini line but they are all unpainted.

boardgamegeek sign in, and you can view high rez pictures of what I'm talking about.

Dungeon command series, and wrath of ashardalon, legend of drizzts, and castle ravenloft.

Dungeon Command doesn't actually use the exact same minis, and they are painted.

Use lego.

No, really. Lego figures are the right size for most grids, are customizable, and can represent a surprising range of creatures if you look hard enough.

I know TroubleBrewing already linked to the downloads section of my website, but I would just like to mention that I have created free OotS style printable minis for all of the races you've listed with the exception of the dwarf clerics. If that's a route that interests you, to make things easier, here's the relevant links:

Wizards hosts most of the artwork from all of their books on their servers. It took me a trivial amount of time (5 hours) to copy it all and make tokens for ~1600 monsters. I used RPTool's TokenTool rather than photoshop, although it wouldn't have been difficult to set up a script and/or macro for PS.

Here's some links I have bookmarked on the topic of miniatures:

I also recommend the bag 'o zombies from Amazon if you're looking for humanoid mooks, or the bag 'o zombies dogs for quadrupeds. They're something like 10$ each for ~100 minis each.

For a big, recurring boss, it might be worth it to go to some toy store and find a plastic children's dragon (Schleich makes very nice models) and just stick a base on that. Safari Ltd also has perfectly-sized 4x4 dragons. Both can be found on Amazon, as well as in brick-and-mortars.
