View Full Version : [PF/3.5] Optimizing Sunder or "Whatever, whatever, I break what I want!"

I've been thinking of doing something awful. I've been thinking of building a character that is so primal that it just rips weapons and armor into pieces with his bare hands. The only problem with this is that, other than Improved Sunder and Greater Sunder, there isn't a TON out there about optimizing Sunder. Believe me, I only got 4 hits when I googled the topic. So, other than those two feats, is there really much you can do to optimize sundering. I mean, there's obviously using an Adamantine weapon, but can you even make natural weapons count as Adamantine?

Warforged Monk with that Adamantine body feat? (There is one, isn't there?)
Then, because the Monk's whole body is a weapon... you could even go so far as to try enchant your body with weapon enchants :smalltongue:
See Rubik's reply to the Elder Evil Tippy challenge... I'll see if I can find the link.

Edit: Here it is. (http://www.giantitp.com/forums./showthread.php?p=15474863#post15474863)

Edit: Ok, so it would appear he doesn't have the feat I'm talking about :smallfrown:

Once you've eliminated penalties for sundering, all you need to do is up your damage and ignore hardness.

For ignoring hardness, you have the Mountain Hammer manuever(s) from ToB. You can grab it with a feat if you can't be bothered to dip a level into Crusader or Warblade. Also adds ~2d6 and ignores DR, which is also nifty. IIRC it should work with fists. Ignoring DR/Hardness means all you have to do is hit and land ~10-20 damage.

Breaker archetype (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/barbarian/archetypes/paizo---barbarian-archetypes/breaker) Barbarians get a little damage boost against items.

Don't dungeoncrasher fighters get a boost to breaking objects?

You can also use Iaijutsu on objects, though the bonus damage is halved.

Destructive Rage from Complete Warrior gives like +8 to breaking things when raging.

Anything that ups your enhancement bonus on natural weapons up to +4 counts as adamantine (to overcome DR, so does this apply to hardness?).

Anyway:

1) Breaker Archetype Barbarian
2) Smasher Rage Power (ignore Hardness 1/Rage)
3) Superstitition, Witch Hunter and Spell Sunder (for when you want to punch the buffs out of that annoying cleric)
4) Find a way to ragecycle: http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=233032

Get as much Strength as possible. A Monk's Robe wouldn't hurt either.

It goes without saying that you need a Necklace of Natural Weapons with the Sundering weapon property applied.

It might be worth checking out claws of the bebilith (BoVD, 88). It's a 5th level corrupt spell that grants claws which can destroy shields and armor. It's not exactly what you're looking for from a sundering perspective, but it looks like it hits the flavor note you're looking for pretty well.

How about Barbarian 1 / Fighter 6 / Warforged Juggernaut 5 / More Fighter?

Use the Fighter's Dungeon Crasher (Dungeonscape) and Dead Levels (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/cwc/20061013a) variants and use the Barbarian's Spiritual Lion Totem (Complete Champion) and City Brawler (Dragon Magazine #349) variants.

Take the Lucky Break (Complete Scoundrel) and Destructive Rage (Complete Warrior) feats.

It might not be that good at destroying weapons and armor but doors will fear you!

Combat Brute will let you punch someone in the face after you punch through their shield.

I'll just leave this here...
Maul of the Titans
This mallet is 8 feet long. If used as a weapon, it is the equivalent of a +3 greatclub and deals triple damage against inanimate objects. However, the wielder must have a Strength of at least 18 to wield it properly. Otherwise, she takes a -4 penalty on attack rolls.

You could also ask your GM about using Cleave to smash through someone's weapons and into their face. It doesn't seem too OP at first glance, and fits the fluff perfectly.

This is exactly what combat brute does: the ability is called sundering cleave.

Also, binder 1 for aym is nice. Gives free improved sunder, and double damage on all sunder attempts (and a couple other nice things, like no movement restrictions for wearing heavy armor).

This would, unfortunately, be the only way to sunder armor. Using the sunder attack only allows you to attack weapons, shields, or worn or carried objects EXCLUDING armor

From SRD:
Sundering a Carried or Worn Object

You don’t use an opposed attack roll to damage a carried or worn object. Instead, just make an attack roll against the object’s AC. A carried or worn object’s AC is equal to 10 + its size modifier + the Dexterity modifier of the carrying or wearing character. Attacking a carried or worn object provokes an attack of opportunity just as attacking a held object does. To attempt to snatch away an item worn by a defender rather than damage it, see Disarm. You can’t sunder armor worn by another character.

Get some method of changing into a Treant with the Ex qualities and that damage is doubled if you make a full attack against an object or structure.

Psionic Sunder (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/psionics-unleashed/feats/psionic-sunder-psionic) and Focused Sunder (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/psionics-unleashed/feats/focused-sunder-psionic) allow you to ignore some hardness, and Psionic Sunder allows you to harm the wielder (a little bit) as well, but you have to be a psionic race or class, or have Wild Talent or another feat granting you power points.

A Soulknife with the Feral Heart archetype (Psionics Augmented) gains claw attacks with an enhancement bonus that scales by level, and a rage-like ability.

I find this terribly interesting. I will have to look into this and see if a buddy of mine that is into Psionics has the PDF

You can sunder armor in Pathfinder (http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/combat.html#_sunder)and it hasn't resulted in a Sunder-pocalype. Yet.
