The ranger spell, Instant Enemy. Does it require an attack roll to affect an enemy, or a caster level check to use? What do you roll, if anything, to determine whether this spell works

Nothing. It just does.

It's similar to True Strike, in a way; swift action spell that makes you better at dealing with that target.

Sweet, ok cool, that's all i needed to know. I wasn't quite sure. Our DM likes making us roll for everything, because somehow high level characters that have been doing trivial tasks forever still have a chance of failure...

What about if it's in a wand. Then it becomes a standard action to cast and requires a UMD DC 20? And can i auto succeed if my UMD is +23 to rolls?

Nope, UMD is the only skill that allows for fumbles.

I'd recommend (ab)using the custom magic item creation rules for this. They'll probably cost more, but you can get use activated gloves or something that will be a swift action with no skill check.

Otherwise, does your main weapon have a wand chamber?

Didnt they change it to casting from a wand uses whatever action the spell originally used?

Are you a ranger using the wand? Cause if your a Ranger of 4th level or higher you do not need to make a UMD check for a spell that is on your spell list.

Uhh, UMD actually only has a penalty on a 1 if the result is a failure, otherwise everything is fine, so yeah anything at or above +19 is an auto success on DC20 for UMD

Actually, activating a wand takes the same amount of time as casting the spell, so a swift action spell would be a swift action to cast from a wand.

Only if the 1 would be a failure. If your modifier is +19 or higher there's no point bothering to roll to use a wand.

Don't need to make one if you're 3rd level or lower, either!

Don't believe me? Check out the rules! (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/magicItemBasics.htm#spellTrigger)
