This is the story of the seven Ebon Phoenix Mages.

In the beginning, there was the many gods, of all greatnesses and ethics. One of these great gods was Levakross, the half-demon god. He warred against forces of both good and evil. To fight for him he took essence of his soul and created seven powerful fiends, each with great martial prowess and arcane skill in thier wicked blood.

The fiends wrought by the powers of Levakross were named Thornuss, Melkion, Gorron, Zizzel, Derthronn, Serroz and Nigh. Each were a driving force against those who opposed thier master's will. But on the material plane thirteen mortal beings fought to destroy or imprison the half-fiend King and he sent the seven fiends to fight these mortal men. The battle raged for many days, blood was spilled on both sides and the mortal coil was shunted by many.

In the end six fiends were slain as were ten mortal mages. The fiend Thornuss fled because he knew when he was beaten, and begged forgiveness from his master, which was gained, at a great price. He was to forever walk the world of men slaying the eternal enemies of his King in his horrific fiendish body.

The three living mages cried for thier fallen comrades, not only for the lives lost but because three men alone could not destroy the evil forces of the half-demon king. They prayed to mystic forces for a way to continue thier fight, they were answered by Amien, the great Jade Phoenix. He granted the mages souls the powers of re-life and let them reincarnate themselves into new bodies when thier old ones grew old and tired or died in glorious battle. They also asked all the mightiest forces of good to imprison the demonic deity and this request too, was granted. They, to this day walk the earth fighting for good.

But the living fiend, Thornuss found out about these reincarnations of the mortal men that had slain his allies and fellow warriors of the king of fiends. And with a wicked grin he devised a plot. Normally, the death of a great fiend is also the destruction of it's soul, but these fiends were too great and left behind but whisps of essence. Thornuss used great evil spells to replicate the powers of the great jade phoenix, bringing life to an unnatural creature in the shape of a winged creature of pure black flame and was given the name of the great ebon phoenix Ikoril. This creature granted the essence of the great fiends the shapes of souls so they may roam the world of men as they once did as mighty warriors. They too walk the earth as mortal men, repossessing the bodies of mortals to fight to free thier wicked lord and those who had slain them and imprisoned thier king. All but Thornuss, who walks the earth in the evil shape he had since his creation.

One of my friend's characters in my campaign is an Ebon phoenix mage, this is sort of the story I made up for both jade and ebon phoenix mages.

Prestige class from the Tome of Battle. Combines martial manuevers with arcane spells.

That'd be the Jade Phoenix Mage. Is the Ebon one a tangental similarity (a la Paladin/Blackguard)?

There's actually no printed version, it's just an adaptation from the Jade Phoenix mage to suit an evil character. It really doesn't take much tweaking, any DM that understands the Jade could easily make it Ebon.

Okay, I knew the Jade Phoenix MAge but had never heard of the Ebon-thingy before.
