So this (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=290888) thread never really resolved with an answer, is this build legit? If not, was there ever a legal way to play an ooze-type pc without a ridculous LA?

Anyone care to take a stab at it?

By a strict reading of the rules as written, that trick is clearly valid. However, that depends on one obvious error and one shaky interpretation, and so almost no DM will actually follow the strict RAW in this case. So if you're just talking about online theorycraft and TO, then the answer is yes, but if you're interested in an actual game, then ask your DM, but the answer is probably no.

The jist of what I got from it was that while a skitterhaunt hairy spider is (sort of) +0LA, it is still unplayable due to mindlessness. However, as has been mentioned, skitterhaunt has not listed LA, though many would argue it defaults to 0. Sentry ooze you might have a harder time arguing with, though if that doesn't work you might be able to wrangle using mineral warrior (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20031003e). If you rule that the Int-2 (min 1) can turn your int - to an int 1, which could then be boosted by items.

The Hairy Spider is a rules dysfunction, since anything mindless can't have an LA or be playable. Then when you apply skitterhaunt, a template meant for mindless creatures in the first place, it clarifies that it does not have an intelligence score. In other words, even if you could argue that the Hairy Spider is telling you two things, the Skitterhaunt is instead telling you one thing (it's not a PC template) and the rules dysfunction from applying a broken errata to a single vermin (of the hundreds published) just happens to be grandfathered in because they didn't write a specific clause against it. Then it gets grandfathered again.

Basically, even if it's rules-legal, it's not valid.

The only way I can see would be to get an amorphous form spell permanencied on you, though it's not technically a valid permanency target. You could perhaps buy a casting of PAO (or a series of PAOs)?

Spell Awaken Ooze can resolve the problem with mindlessness, but switch type to Aberration
