Does anyone here play crawl? It's a rougelike RPG. I like it alot, but I don't know how to load games. Does anyone else know how?

Check your man pages.

Of course I've never gotten anyone past level... 9?

I like the casters but they're so fragile at start that they die off. Thieves are decent, the not being noticed goes a long ways. In fact they go all the way untill someone actually notices them, then they die. The troll beserk was astonishingly good, my main worry with him (food) never was much of an issue. The invisible guy shooting fire at him was an issue. A centaur healer with a bow did well, untill cornered by orcs.

Sometime I'm going to have to invest the time to run a mummy necromancer with a real army of undead. More then just four or five at a time. He'll probably be at level 4 before he descends to the second dungeon level, with only 20 or so skeletons following him.

Ah, I understand now. You're using a port of crawl, probably for some flavor of Microsoft OS.

I play in a Linux distro, the man pages are the help files and have complete instructions for running the game. Check your help files and/or readme.txt for your parameters.

Alternately, you can wade through the code if you have the skill and patience for it.

If you saved your game the last time you quit, then when you launch the game again, your character's name should be offered as default in the field where normally you'd enter your new character's name. Just press Enter, and you should be continuing the game from the point where you saved.

Does anyone else know how?I haven't played Crawl, but just in case your question is "how do I restore a saved game after I die," it's entirely possible that you don't; roguelikes in general only 'save' so that you can stop playing and saved games are deleted once you load them. Once you die, you have to start over.

My most successful runs were with the Fighter, particularly Troll Fighter. They have lots of power and hit points, and excellent protection, and their powers don't run out. I prefer Troll Fighter over Troll Berserker because the Fighter doesn't have to worry about what to do with corpses -- it's always eat, eat, eat. It's good for you :)

For Fighters it's important to save up wands to use on the tough ranged-attack monsters. And use corners! Force the monsters to get close to you.

I like to play Demonspawn Fighters because they get innate ranged attacks from their racial abilities, but it never seems to work out. One day, though...

I also occasionally do well with a Wizard once I get over the initial deadly part. Wizards seem to do better than specialists such as Conjurers, who are... too specialized. Centaur Wizards are especially good, since they have the speed to stay out of range and still cast spells. Unfortunately, with Wizards I tend to get into a strategic trap at deeper levels: they're not yet strong enough to face the next level, but they can't stay at the current level indefinitely because they'll run out of food. Magic makes you hungry!
