Comon you guys. Dig out those old files and show me your very first, (not first acceptable) or the closest one to being the first. Theres nothing to be ashamed of, everyone comes from humble beginnings :smallwink:.

My very first. I kind of planned it out on paper first, but its still the very first avatar of mine :smallcool:

YES, I want to see the monstrosities made by you. Don't worry, my blood can handle it. :smallwink:

Then I made Wolfwood for somebody on the request thread. I forget who.

Well, my first avatar would be the one you see to your left, although you can click here (http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/Nuchtos/lokkiofthesticksuperbigsize.gif) if you want to see it super big-sized.

I made it in OpenOffice.org Draw and cheated heavily by basically tracing from an OotS strip (specifically Julio as the pose is a mixture of two I knew he'd done recently). In retrospect I wish I'd neated up the hair slightly. The character's meant to have messy hair, but as it stands at the moment it looks too spiky and anime-ish. Not that I'm saying anything against anime, 'tis just it doesn't really suit the OotS style, which tends to use relatively simplistic hair (and every thing else :smalltongue:).

I've been making avatars for couple of days now.

first ready was this:
http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u189/Srednak/avatara.png
I made it for animated object competition. Then I made couple Belkars with Miko hat (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33073)for Belkar funclub.

My current avatar and its variations are really first I've made starting with blank paper. With competiton avatars I used lowresolution photos I found online and painted on them.. Belkar pictures are combined clips from comic.

EDIT: it's not current anymore. This is first I've done all the way
http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u189/Srednak/sadnersmall.png

So its either crazy nutmeg or the one on left.

PS I'm very thankfull to giant and all you avatarists folks cause I haven't been drawing any pictures for past year

I made mine pretty much exactly a year ago in good old MS Paint (yep, the file details I have say Jan 2006)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v229/wickedweasley/Old%20bits/oots.jpg

I modified it soon after, and then began to modify it more and more and until it got to the point where I have rather too many of them!

I just finished my very first proper OOTS avatar - I'm so proud!

http://www.cl.uni-heidelberg.de/%7Ebrunner/ReedOOTS.png
It's something I wanted to do for a very long time (actually, having an OOTS avatar was one of the reasons I joined the forum in the first place). But I had real trouble at first as I didn't have a proper program to use... I used Inkscape now and it worked really well.
Actually, this was my *very* first avatar, done several months back:

Quite a difference, huh? But it's actually supposed to be the same character - Reed, of course. :smallwink:

And I really don't get why people are knocking MS Paint.

zachol
2007-01-31, 08:34 PM
I won't mock it, but I will say it's amazingly easy to get used to Inkscape, and (IMHO) far better at making OotS-style stick figures.

As in, it is literally more of a hassle to use MS Paint than it is to use Inkscape.
Again, that's my opinion, and I'm sure there's some Paint masters who swear by it, but it seems like even the slightest change in Paint requires as much work as making the thing in the first place.

That Lanky Bugger

zachol
2007-01-31, 08:54 PM
Yeah, I have no idea how I'd do something with animation.
Likely make a series of panels and then use the GIMP.

Mr_Saturn

Animation works just like a flip-book Drawing each frame-by-frame. Unless you got on your hands a very expensive program.

Yes, animating is a pain.

Rex Idiotarum
2007-01-31, 10:31 PM
Animation is easy, just be patient, use layers, and just move a bit at a time.

With avatars, keep it simple and repetitive.

The components from my animated Lerk avatar. Export just the body with a set of wings, swap to a different set of wings, reexport with a different name, repeat as needed, then run the images through whatever tool you happen to use for animation. For added realism, add slight altitude variations. End result:

Heh. My first avatar? I foolishly submitted it into an Iron Avatarist contest a coupl of months back. I forget which one. It's rather Un-OotS, as it has not but the clothing:
http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/8688/witchkingofamrothqy2.png
Yes, it's the Witch King. I'm such a sell-out, but it actually turned out moderately like the little sketches I had been making previously on paper. I would stick them on computers at the school, and write "This computer now belongs to the Witchking. Flee, for no mortal may use it!" on the sketch.

Then I tried refining later stuff, and when Werewolf III came around, I had my second avatar ready for my blacksmith role in that game. It still rather sucks, though.
http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/645/goblinkr2.png
The head is based rather entirely on Tomb Raven's Polka Redcloak, as seen in my signature. Which, by looking at recloak in the actual comic, means that I base my goblin-heads on Rich's work, too. Almost exactly, save for the mouth.

I have a moderatley good bat in my "Spare Parts" document in Paint. That's the document I put all my webcomic crap on.

It was supposed to be Lucifer from the Vertigo series, but topless dudes are hard to do well in OOTS style. I gave him a tux and looked up the tutorial thread to arrive at the version I'm using now.

There were a few abortive attempts much longer ago, but none of them were finished.

Looks like Miko, kinda, you need to learn gradients, they nmake msot art look good.

Unless that is paint in which case learn shading.

Rex Idiotarum
2007-02-11, 11:24 PM
No gradients, you need animation and to remove the white background.
*Removing the white background requires it to be animated and removes much of the quality of the gradients*

Naw, its inkscape. I ain't paying money, I'm too cheap.

It wound up looking like Miko kinda by accident- her hair was initially a different color, as well as her clothes, but it didn't work out. It was only after I changed it all that I was like, "hey yeah, that looks kinda like Miko." But I got bored and wanted to move on. Plus, I had a chem sheet to finish. I'm currently messing around in Inkscape trying to learn my way around.

Thanks for the tips, I really appreciate them- always trying to improve!

Made my current avatar yesterday. Some things need fixing, hopefully tonight - the head's too small, the torso's too long, a few other things. Unfortunately, the top hat takes up a lot of space, making everything smaller than most avatars. But it just wouldn't be Slash without it.

Edit: Updated my avatar. Top hat's still shrinking everything, but at least the proportions look a little better. Here's the first one for comparison:http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p104/headwarpage/slash1-1.gif

I suck at gradients, myself. I use Sneak's Colored Line Technique™ to add depth, and just reserve gradients for Speshul Effects.

Also, shape tweens pwn motion tweens.

Rex Idiotarum
2007-02-13, 09:22 AM
Dude? WTF? Shape tweens are only good with Shape Guids, and even then it's just easier to redraw the whole thing yourself. A Motion Tween, with Guide Layer, can get you someting like:
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n291/rexidiotarum/pogo2.gif
The Hat's flip, really, all I drew was a Line and pu hat at one point in the first panel, and another i the last, the guide, oriented to path, of course, did the rest.

Also, if you want to get rid of the Black background, and go with a Transparent one like mine are, Publish it as an animated GIF with Transparentcy Set.

Abardam
2007-02-13, 09:38 AM
So, you would redraw something like this:

frame by frame?

And yes, shape tweens are only good with shape guides. And they are awesome with shape guides.

Rex Idiotarum

That's okay, but when you get to OOTS style, It's easier wid da Motion Tween:

It's actually supposed to be a cape, flowing in the same direction as the hair, with a crescent-shaped blade in the right hand. I didn't realize it looked like a shield handle. Maybe I'll fiddle around with it a bit more, and, again, make it larger. Thanks for the cookie!

Helloooo, just registered today and have pumped out my first batch of avatars. I've got the basics down and I'm sticking fairly close to OOTS standards for my first avatars.

Also whoever uses paint has my deepest respect, as I recall it is a fairly clunky program. Does the newest revisions have layers yet? That would drive me batty doing avatars without layers.

Thanks Z, I'm using Adobe Illustrator and if I had to guess judging from your avatar you're using it as well.

I've used Illustrator extensively for the last 4 years on some design projects, and it seems to be a perfect fit for the OOTS style. Illustrator is great for avatars because simple shapes are highly editable and manipulation is fairly easy once you've become acquainted with the tools.

I still got plenty of work to do on my stances and the details like clothing and weaponry.

I use the Vista version of MS Paint... no layers, just maybe one or two minor improvements.

For something as simple as an OOTS-style avatar, I don't see the need for layers. If you really want to do something like layer wings separately from the body of a character, just make two separate pics and layer them in Photoshop or something. :)

Bryn
2007-03-02, 10:56 AM
I'd disagree. Perhaps you need, say, a shield to move along slightly, and you've spent a lot of time drawing a very detailed, shaded shield. Problem is, there's something in front of the shield. With layers, you can move it and not have to redraw anything.

Rex Idiotarum

Eh, in MS Paint I would just cut out the shield part with a mask and move it over slightly, then fill in the few empty pixels. Sure, it might be easier with layers, but I usually sketch everything out with outlines that can easily be deleted or replaced before adding detail anyway to avoid needing layers. :)

My first wasn't too bad. However, I quickly realized that keeping the face-hair wasn't going to fly (my hair is black), so I just eliminated it in later avatars. Also, I decided that simplicity was going to be my goal, so I never used a gradient again. The avatar is actually diagonal because I thought it looked too short given the confines of 117x117. I got over that pretty quickly, though.

Hard to believe that was over two years ago already. =|

<----First one is current one. Made it a couple of years ago, then went dead on the boards for a while. I thought I had lost it--had to break into photobucket to find it. Thought of switching the mind flayer to a ghoul, for the irony of having a metroid suck the energy from a ghoul, but never got around to it. At the time, I had a statement below him (before the boards got changed) that said "nothing sucks like a metroid."

At the same time, I made this guy:

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b30/Annon1126/newavatar.gif

He didn't scale down to avi size very well, so here's the big version (http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b30/Annon1126/newavatargame.gif)

He was a mithril-bodied warforged barbarian with yellow eyes that changed color to sapphire while he was raging. His head is low on his body because his shoulders are supposed to be hunched. If you were wondering, that's a shield on his back, a warhammer on his belt, a scythe in his hands, on which he is wearing spiked gauntlets. Yeah, I like to be prepared :smallwink:

Funny thing is, I found this thread because I forgot how to set up Sodipodi, and searched the forums for it
