Q264
If you have sufficient sneak attack available as a spellthief, can you employ each of your abilities separately from a single attack?

That is, when you hit with +3d6 sneak attack, can you Steal a Spell, Steal a Spell Effect, and Steal Energy Resistance, for a net of Zero sneak attack damage?

Q265
Is there any way to boost your effective Class level for the spellthief's Absorb Spell ability, or is it strictly based on your character's actual class level?

Q266
Is there any way to boost the number of stolen spell levels a spellthief can retain above his actual class level? Master Spellthief does not seem to help with this.

Q 267

Is the Book of Exalted Deeds 3.5 material or 3.0? If 3.5, I'll need solid evidence.
A 267
The Book of Exalted Deeds is 3.5. It was published in October 2003, several months after the 3.5 core books were published (July 2003), making it one of the early 3.5 books. Additionally, the 3.5 errata page (https://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/er/20040125a) includes the Book of Exalted Deeds with 3.5 books, rather than with 3.0 books.

An example of the 3.5 rules use in the Book of Exalted Deeds is the use of revised skills; creatures and classes in the book use 3.5 skill names rather than the 3.0 equivalents (e.g. Survival instead of Wilderness Lore and Intuit Direction, or Sleight of Hand instead of Pick Pocket).

The 3.0 spell "Speed of the Wind" grants the subject a +4 enhancement bonus to dexterity and a -2 enhancement penalty to constitution.

In most cases, modifiers to a given check or roll stack (combine for a cumulative effect) if they come from different sources and have different types (or no type at all), but do not stack if they have the same type or come from the same source (such as the same spell cast twice in succession). If the modifiers to a particular roll do not stack, only the best bonus and worst penalty applies.

Multiple enhancement bonuses on the same object (in the case of armor and weapons), creature (in the case of natural armor), or ability score do not stack. Only the highest enhancement bonus applies.

[Source] (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/theBasics.htm)

Q270 The wording for enhancement bonuses doesn't seem designed to include penalties, so I included the general stacking rule. As Enhancement bonuses are non-stacking, I think penalties would default to that ruling. Can you, in fact, have two enhancement modifiers on the same roll?

Andezzar
2014-01-05, 06:43 AM
A 270 Kind of

There is no enhancement penalty in 3.5 AFAIK. The spell in question is from an unupdated 3.0 book, as such the DM is encouraged to make slight adjustments to make it work in 3.5. One of those adjustments could be to remove the word enhancement.

You can have more than one enhancement bonus, but those bonuses do not stack, only the highest one applies.

Khedrac
2014-01-05, 06:59 AM
A 270 additional It is also usually assumed that by default, penalties from different sources do stack.

The logic behind this is (I think) because the "no stack" rule explicitly states "bonuses" and the effect of losing one's dexterity bonus to AC not affecting dexterity penalties makes clear the ruleset's assumption of difference between bonuses and penalties.

Q273:

I have a question about the feat Spell Mastery. The text in question is as follows (emphasis mine):

Each time you take this feat, choose a number of spells equal to your Intelligence modifier that you already know. From that point on, you can prepare these spells without referring to a spellbook.

To "know" a spell, do you have to be a high enough level to cast it? Or is having it in your spellbook enough?

Ditto
2014-01-05, 10:51 PM
A273
Having a spell in your book = 'Knowing' for a wizard. The entry under spellbooks does not place any restrictions on spells you have learned from other wizards' spellbooks, such as 'no recording high level spells beyond your understanding'. You are still limited in preparing only spells of a spell level that matches your daily allotment, but if you really wanted to apply Spell Mastery to a spell even though you can't prepare & cast it yet... go for it.

Can you back that assumption up by a rule?
That's the basic stacking rule, which I've quoted here many times:
Stacking

In most cases, modifiers to a given check or roll stack (combine for a cumulative effect) if they come from different sources and have different types (or no type at all), but do not stack if they have the same type or come from the same source (such as the same spell cast twice in succession). Will a True Seeing (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/trueSeeing.htm) spell reveal the true form of a creature petrified by Flesh to Stone (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/fleshToStone.htm)? True Seeing would ordinarily "sees the true form of polymorphed, changed, or transmuted things.", but would Flesh to Stone, being an instantaneous effect, count as "transmuted"?

Curmudgeon
2014-01-06, 10:55 AM
A 277 Yes.

Flesh to Stone is a Transmutation spell, and True Seeing can discern the true form of a transmuted thing (i.e., one which has been subject to a Transmutation in the past). True Seeing has no exclusions based on spell duration, and the true form of a creature turned to stone is inherent in their transmuted shape: i.e., when the spell is reversed with Stone to Flesh it becomes the original creature rather than just a flesh statue.

Q 228 Where, precisely, does it say rules as written that a PC may only take one template on a character?

Reason: I built a character with more then one template, and one of the other players upon learning that the DM had knowingly allowed this before I got to the session protested, claiming RAW that this can't be done. We didn't want to stop the game cold for an unknown period of time before we found this ruling cause the protesting player swore he'd read it somewhere but couldn't remember which book for certain, so I took the nerf and removed it down to 1 template.

And if I had not done this I would have later made a save that kept my character from getting unnecessarily screwed, which chain reaction-ed into the rest or of the party getting screwed.

And since I'm presently building back up characters in the event that this one dies, I want to make sure of weather this guy is right, or if he's in error.

Apparently, they don't say that.

Adding More Than One Template
In theory, there’s no limit to the number of templates you can add to a creature. To add more than one template, just apply each template one at a time. Always apply inherited templates before applying acquired templates. Whenever you add multiple templates, pay attention to the creature’s type—you may add a template that makes the creature ineligible for other templates you might want to add.

Q 228 Where, precisely, does it say rules as written that a PC may only take one template on a character?
A 278

There is no such rule. A creature may have any number of templates applied to it; there is no special exception for PCs in this regard. The character must meet the requirements of the templates applied, of course, and said templates applied to PCs must not be Level Adjustment: -, but otherwise a character is free to have multiple templates. Per the SRD (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/improvingMonsters.htm#addingMoreThanOneTemplate):

In theory, there’s no limit to the number of templates you can add to a creature. To add more than one template, just apply each template one at a time. Since you can take your hand off of a weapon as a free action, (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/rg/20041102a) could you two-weapon fight by using a two-handed weapon and then taking your hand off of the weapon to make Unarmed Strikes, taking penalties as appropriate for the different attacks?

Andezzar
2014-01-06, 05:16 PM
A 281

Yes, but it is even easier than that. An Unarmed Strike can be performed with any part of the body, so you do not need to remove one hand from the two-handed weapon (since no rule states what action is required to put it back). Either way, unless you have Improved Unarmed Strike or similar ability, you would provoke an AoO doing that. Armor spikes would also work without ever provoking.

RE: Silence Spell

Upon the casting of this spell, complete silence prevails in the affected area. All sound is stopped: Conversation is impossible, spells with verbal components cannot be cast, and no noise whatsoever issues from, enters, or passes through the area. The spell can be cast on a point in space, but the effect is stationary unless cast on a mobile object. The spell can be centered on a creature, and the effect then radiates from the creature and moves as it moves. An unwilling creature can attempt a Will save to negate the spell and can use spell resistance, if any. Items in a creature’s possession or magic items that emit sound receive the benefits of saves and spell resistance, but unattended objects and points in space do not. This spell provides a defense against sonic or language-based attacks.

Say there's a situation where we have a PC and a Tiny animal sharing the same space (square)… the tiny animal was the target of a successfully cast Silence Spell (target failed Will save). I'm curious if the Will save applies only to the intended target, and its possessions as described in the above quote, or if the PC sharing the same space or any PC within the spells radius for that matter would also receive a chance at a Will save? It seems to me that RAW is saying only the target and target's possessions (as explained above) have the opportunity at a Will save/SR…

My group is playing only with online source material and is using the rule of you start with 1 feat, and do not get any more unless specified by your class or race. So as a bard with a race that does not get a bonus feat, I only get 1 feat before epic level. Is this correct, and if not, where can I find the correct rule online? Feats are gained at a character's first Hit Dice/character level, and at ever 3 Hit Dice/character levels thereafter (3, 6, 9, 12, etc.). This information can be found in the Player's Handbook, on page 87 (among other places), but to the best of my knowledge was not included in the SRD, as is the case with most information regarding the process of leveling up.

Resistance To Energy: A creature with resistance to energy has the ability (usually extraordinary) to ignore some damage of a certain type each round, but it does not have total immunity.

damage reduction: A creature with this special quality (extraordinary or supernatural) ignores damage from most weapons and natural attacks.

A) It depends on the PrC in question, two examples:

When a new archmage level is gained, the character gains new spells per day (and spells known, if applicable) as if he had also gained a level in whatever arcane spellcasting class in which he could cast 7th-level spells before he added the prestige class level.

From 2nd level on, when a new eldritch knight level is gained, the character gains new spells per day as if she had also gained a level in whatever arcane spellcasting class she belonged to before she added the prestige class.

B) If A is yes, B is also yes. If A is no, B is obviously no.

A 294

There is no comprehensive RAW answer to this question, but some parameters can be gleaned.
Usually a harmful spell allows a target to make a saving throw to avoid some or all of the effect. The Saving Throw entry in a spell description defines which type of saving throw the spell allows and describes how saving throws against the spell work.
All examples of specific harm in Player's Handbook involve directly dealing damage (including ability damage). Most summoning spells are disallowed with Glyph of Warding.
Summon monster I and similar spells are not attacks because the spells themselves don’t harm anyone.
Your Spell Glyph example would not be allowed, because you cannot make the trigger be dependent on spellcasting capability or ability scores and thus cannot guarantee harm by a Transformation which would alter those scores or prevent spellcasting.
... glyphs can be set according to physical characteristics (such as height or weight) or creature type, subtype, or kind. Glyphs can also be set with respect to good, evil, law, or chaos, or to pass those of your religion. They cannot be set according to class, Hit Dice, or level.

Can an Archivist use Planar Touchstone > Catalogues of Enlightenment > Higher Order ability to scribe a scroll of his or her ability?

What I've gleaned:

Scribe Scroll feat says you have to know the spell
Item Creation (Scroll) rules say you have to have the spell prepared
DMG says you can sub a spell completion, spell trigger, or spell like ability usage in place of a prepared spell. It consumes one charge of the item when you do this.
Catalogues of Enlightenment lets you cast a spell exactly as if you prepared it, but does not appear to be either a prepared spell or a spell like ability.

Having now consulted four references, two of which conflict, I'm curious if there's a fifth reference that can resolve the dilemma.

2014-01-08, 12:13 PM
A 294 Additional logical deductions since RAW does not actually answer the question. "Harmful" spells are not defined, but "Harmless" spells are, in the section on saving throws.

(harmless)
The spell is usually beneficial, not harmful, but a targeted creature can attempt a saving throw if it desires.

It specifically notes that it's the opposite of a harmful spell. I think you could pretty easily convince most people that any spell that allows a save and isn't (harmless) is a harmful spell.

Edit update: I was wrong. AaEG is 3.0. Keep reading.

Arms and Equipment Guide page 4 says each size category up increases price and weight by 50% over the previous category. Example given is a throwing axe: 4 lbs small, 6 lbs medium, 9 lbs large; 8gp, 12gp, and 18gp.

Arms and Equipment Guide page 4 says each size category up increases price and weight by 50% over the previous category.
I'm afraid Arms and Equipment Guide, being a 3.0 book, is referring to the old weapon size system, which was discarded in the change to 3.5 rules.
Weight figures are for Medium weapons. A Small weapon weighs half as much, and a Large weapon weighs twice as much. The AaEG figures are clearly in disagreement with the actual 3.5 Player's Handbook rule here.

There is no "Colossal+" weapon size. For sizes outside those given in Player's Handbook, these rules from page 152 of Rules Compendium apply:
COST
This value is the weapon’s cost in coins. The cost includes all miscellaneous gear that goes with the weapon, such as a sheath. This cost is the same for a Small or Medium version of the weapon. A larger version costs twice the noted price per size category larger than Medium. A smaller version costs half the price per two size categories smaller than Medium (round up).

WEIGHT
This is the weight of a Medium version of the weapon. A larger version weighs twice as much per size category larger than Medium. A smaller version weighs half as much per size category smaller than Medium. Thus Colossal weapons weigh and cost 16x as much as Medium weapons.

294 follow up

A 294

There is no comprehensive RAW answer to this question, but some parameters can be gleaned.
All examples of specific harm in Player's Handbook involve directly dealing damage (including ability damage). Most summoning spells are disallowed with Glyph of Warding.
Summoning spells are specifically listed here as an example of something you might do with the Spell Glyph function, so that cannot be the standard definition of 'harm'. I'm not sure where the passage you quoted is coming from, Curmudgeon...

If the spell summons creatures, they appear as close as possible to the intruder and attack

Your Spell Glyph example would not be allowed, because you cannot make the trigger be dependent on spellcasting capability or ability scores and thus cannot guarantee harm by a Transformation which would alter those scores or prevent spellcasting.

I'm not worried about the trigger, that can be set on the standard parameters listed. There are always going to be people who aren't harmed by a spell, even an obviously harmful one like Fireball - if you have a ring of fire immunity, it doesn't hurt you, but that doesn't mean the spell shouldn't trigger. If Transformation zaps a Barbarian, oops. If it zaps a wizard, definitely harmful. If a spell can be at all harmful, then I think it falls to Broodax's suggestion - the only ones clearly disallowed as Harmful are the ones labeled (Harmless).

Can you sneak attack when activating an item like Lens of the Desert? It 'creates a beam of focused sunlight that is the equivalent of a Sunbeam spell'. That's one step further removed from a weapon, or casting a weapon-like spell from a scroll or wand... The Epic Level Handbook introduces Colossal+ as a valid size category. While this is a 3.0 source, there is no reason to beieve that 3.5 stops it from being a valid size category. The Epic Level Handbook introduces Colossal+ as a valid size category. While this is a 3.0 source, there is no reason to beieve that 3.5 stops it from being a valid size category.
Colossal+ is a virtual size category which applies only to dragons; there is no actual increase in size. The 3.5 version of this is in Draconomicon on page 99:
Colossal+ Size: Although there is no size category larger than Colossal, the largest advanced dragons have a greater reach and deal more damage with their attacks than other Colossal dragons. Because there is no size larger than Colossal, there are no weapons larger than Colossal.

A 300 Same as with energy draining.

A humanoid or monstrous humanoid slain by a vampire’s energy drain rises as a vampire spawn 1d4 days after burial.

If the vampire instead drains the victim’s Constitution to 0 or lower, the victim returns as a spawn if it had 4 or less HD and as a vampire if it had 5 or more HD.

The way I am reading this indicates that the first sentence establishes the baseline for the create spawn ability. It works on humanoids and monstrous humanoids only and takes 1d4 days.

The next part indicates that using blood drain will result in different vampire-type creatures depending on the victim's Hit Dice, but doesn't actually modify anything else about the ability. It should still only work on humanoids and monstrous humanoids, and it should still take 1d4 days to happen.

Two questions.

Q308 Dampen Magic from Complete Champion causes magical weapons to have lower enhancement bonuses when attacking the target. If the weapon's enhancement bonus is reduced below +1, "its masterwork bonus still applies."

Does this mean that the weapon is still a magical weapon, and its damage is still magic (for purposes of damage reduction, etc)?

Q309 Resurrection and its spell line restore subjects to "full hit points, vigor, and health." This is not a game-defined term. Can I safely assume that it roughly equates to healing the same statuses as Heal?

I ask because, while ability damage is a form of affliction to a target and, well, damage, ability drain is permanently changing the target's body/mind. For this reason, Heal does not restore ability drain.

Does resurrection/true resurrection heal ability drain?

Curmudgeon
2014-01-09, 12:04 AM
A 308 No.

A weapon which has only a masterwork enhancement bonus is not treated as magical.
Some monsters are vulnerable to magic weapons. Any weapon with at least a +1 magical enhancement bonus on attack and damage rolls overcomes the damage reduction of these monsters.

A 309 Ask your DM.

Hit points are a well-defined game term, but "vigor and health" aren't. "Health" equating with Heal is a reasonable assumption, but not specifically backed by RAW. The Vigor spell (Spell Compendium, page 229) simply restores hit points, so making such analogies doesn't adequately decipher this phrase. Your individual DM will have to decide the specific benefits entailed here.

Andezzar

A 311 Correction:

As a character with LA +1 and one class level you are an ECL 2 character. As such you must have at least 1000 XP, otherwise you cannot use that combination. So you would need an addition 2000 to get to ECL 3.

To determine the effective character level (ECL) of a monster character, add its level adjustment to its racial Hit Dice and character class levels.

Use ECL instead of character level to determine how many experience points a monster character needs to reach its next level. Also use ECL to determine starting wealth for a monster character.

Q312: What kind of action is it to close one's eyes? I saw something about closing your eyes in response to a gaze attack which seems to imply it would be an immediate action. Is there a rules citation to confirm or deny this?

Q313: Can immediate actions interrupt one another? Assuming that the above is accurate, if a player closes their eyes to avoid being demoralized, can another player activate a wand of Lesser Celerity to interrupt the eye closing, thus gaining a move action to demoralize via Fearsome armor?

Q314: Can a swift action interrupt a readied action? In this case, a player has readied an action to demoralize a foe who "does anything including closing his eyes." Dampen Magic only suppresses the enhancement bonus of magic items (which is all that matters as far as DR/magic is concerned), and leaves other magical properties unaffected. The weapon is still magical, which means Starmantle's only effect in this case would be to add a Reflex save for half damage to the weapon attacks.

A 312 A free action.
Each character within range of a gaze attack must attempt a saving throw (which can be a Fortitude or Will save) each round at the beginning of his turn.

An opponent can avert his eyes from the creature’s face, looking at the creature’s body, watching its shadow, or tracking the creature in a reflective surface. Gaze attacks aren't strictly attacks in the standard D&D sense, because they don't happen on the "attacker's" turn. Averting or closing your eyes to avoid a gaze attack happens only when it's your turn. An action which takes negligible time but is performed on your turn is the characteristic of a free action. Immediate actions, by contrast, have a strict limit of one use per round, and there's no such restriction here; you can avert your eyes from multiple gaze attacks, and doing so does not prevent you from taking swift/immediate actions later in that turn.

A 313

Yes, immediate actions can be made in response to other immediate actions, as long as the 1 per round per character limit is maintained. (That's not relevant to the situation you proposed in the previous question, though.)

A 318 Yes.

Telekinesis has no language overriding the usual weapon attack rules, except to impose additional range constraints. No, an item either provides a continuous effect or is activated one or several times per day. What you could do is take an effect that already lasts 24 h or more and make it activated 1/day. This however would not give any cost reduction beyond the cost for 1/day.

A 317

Except for a veto by the DM (as with all custom items) there is no limit. Don't forget though that any ability after the first gets a 50% cost increase (so be sure to enchant the most costly ability first).

Only Cyric grants his clerics the skull of secrets spell, for example, and only Mystra’s clerics can cast holy star. A character can achieve this distinction by taking an initiate feat, such as Initiate of Cyric or Initiate of Mystra, which is available only to clerics of the specified deity. A 326

Any skill listed in a monster's description is a class skill for its racial HD. Per the SRD (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/intro.htm#skills):

This line gives the creature’s skills, along with each skill’s modifier (including adjustments for ability scores, armor check penalties, and any bonuses from feats or racial traits). All listed skills are class skills, unless the creature has a character class (noted in the entry). A creature’s type and Intelligence score determine the number of skill points it has.

The Skills section of the creature’s description recaps racial bonuses and other adjustments to skill modifiers for the sake of clarity; these bonuses should not be added to the listed skill modifiers.

A256 Despite the way it is worded a summoned creature and it's summoner do not act at exactly the same time - that's not how D&D works.
Instead one must take its actions then the other, thus normally no-one can cast a spell while someoen else is in the middle of their action.

There are exceptions to this - immediate spells and readied actions.

So, in answer to your example, if the spell was readied to be cast it would depend on the ready trigger. If not then it would either go before the movement or after depending on the action order.

A 333 -50 or more; ask your DM.

The table here (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/epic/skills.htm#disguise) lists a -50 penalty to your Disguise check if you change your height up to 50%. Size changes normally involve a change of about -50% or +100% (i.e., a factor of 2 for most size steps).

Q 259 335 I want to create a magic Item that is slotless and ...
A 335 Ask your DM.

The rules are in Dungeon Master's Guide on page 282. Here's an excerpt.
BEHIND THE CURTAIN: MAGIC ITEM GOLD PIECE VALUES

Many factors must be considered when determining the price of magic items you invent. The easiest way to come up with a price is to match the new item to an item priced in this chapter and use its price as a guide. Otherwise, use the guidelines summarized on Table 7–33: Estimating Magic Item Gold Piece Values.
...
You’ll notice, however, that not all the items presented here adhere to these formulas directly. The reasons for this are several. First and foremost, these few formulas aren’t enough to truly gauge the exact differences between, say, a ring of fire resistance and boots of speed—two very dissimilar items. Each of the magic items presented here was examined and modified based on its actual worth. The formulas only provide a starting point. The ultimate price for any custom magic item, based on actual worth, can only be set by your individual DM.

The ability damage is a component of the spell, not an effect. If you cannot supply the component, then you cannot cast the spell. The problem is that this component is only supplied after the spell's effect has ended. Also is there a rule that being immune to ability damage means that you do not get hit with ability damage? I thought is simply reduced the ability by 0.

How far can you throw an object without a defined range? Say a Monk uses Improved Disarm to snatch a wand from an enemy, and wants to hurl it as far away as possible. How far can he throw it (assuming he is just going for maximum range, and not aiming for a specific square)? Also, what kind of action is it to throw the wand?

Curmudgeon
2014-01-10, 11:08 PM
A 339
An improvised thrown weapon has a range increment of 10 feet. You can throw anything you can wield as an improvised missile up to 5 range increments (or up to 10 increments with Far Shot). You aim at a square (AC 5), and hit one of the adjacent squares (within range) randomly if you miss. This uses an attack.

Your DM can decide that this range is impractically far for something as light as a wand, but this is the best RAW answer I can find.

Nothing prevents swimming while at a medium or heavy load, but the rules for lifting and pushing/dragging specify that the load must be done so across the ground, and water is not ground. Therefore, the largest heavy load is the maximum that can be carried while swimming. For a Primal Water Elemental, this is 44,288 lb.

The Mystic Ranger variant class is in Dragon # 336 on page 105. Wild Shape is a variant for the standard Ranger class in Unearthed Arcana on page 58 and also here (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/variantCharacterClasses.htm#ranger). Because it's a variant for the standard Ranger class, you cannot by RAW apply the Wild Shape variant to an altered Ranger class.

You could talk to your DM about a house rule here, though; the parts aren't incompatible. The class features that the Wild Shape variant trades away are still available in the Mystic Ranger class; they're just granted one level later in all cases. Thus you might convince your DM to allow the Wild Shape changes on a Mystic Ranger chassis, but delayed a level: fast movement as Barbarian except 1 level later, and wild shape as Druid except also 1 level later.

Curmudgeon

A 347 Yes.
Try Again: No. The check represents what you know, and thinking about a topic a second time doesn’t let you know something that you never learned in the first place.
The rules prohibit you from making more than one Knowledge check for the same topic (creature). Thus you make one Knowledge check and that's what you use for both creature identification and Knowledge Devotion; Collector of Stories applies to that check.

Size categories for creatures and objects are based entirely on height or length. Typical weight values are given for creatures, but these are not strictly adhered to and are just for reference (a tiny creature made entirely out of stone would weigh significantly more than 8 pounds, for example).

The phrase is actually "struck by magic or magic weapons," which I'm pretty sure is just shorthand for the previously stated list ("magic weapons, or... spells, spell-like effects, or supernatural effects") all of which are magical in nature.

So my answer is yes, the 50% chance applies.

Incorporeal creatures can be harmed only by other incorporeal creatures, by magic weapons, or by spells, spell-like effects, or supernatural effects. They are immune to all nonmagical attack forms. They are not burned by normal fires, affected by natural cold, or harmed by mundane acids.

Even when struck by magic or magic weapons, an incorporeal creature has a 50% chance to ignore any damage from a corporeal source—except for a force effect or damage dealt by a ghost touch weapon.

Any divine spellcaster can leave some spell slots open during his or her regular prayer time. Spell slots that are left empty can be filled later, though this requires extra prayer time.

The only things you cannot do when you prepare divine spells outside of your regularly scheduled prayer time are: (1) abandon previously prepared spells to replace them with different ones, or (2) replenish or replace previously prepared spells whose slots became empty when you cast them. You can fill or refill these spell slots only during your regularly scheduled prayer time.

The spells that a prepared caster learns and writes into their spellbooks are repeatedly referred to as "spells known". The most straight-forward example is at the top of p.57 of the PHB. So let's say I'm a level 20 druid (All core, though it shouldn't make a difference) and want to use a maximized Summon Nature's Ally level 6. It's not a "version" of a spell. It's a spell with a metamagic applied to it. Together they are not just a spell. They are two different things temporarily put together. If it were a version of a spell, someone could learn to cast that version as a higher level spell without having the feat and that's not the case.

Druid level 8, right. Is there anything from stopping me from Wild Shaping into a Giant Octopus on land and attacking? Technically, they can't breathe air,

These creatures always have swim speeds and thus can move in water without making Swim checks. An aquatic creature can breathe underwater. It cannot also breathe air unless it has the amphibious special quality.
But then they still have a move speed of 20ft, presumably on land.
So I can attack regularly, right? As long as I transform before I asphyxiate, which, presuming it takes the same amount of time to drown in the water for a non-aquatic creature, would take 26 rounds.

Am I correct in all this?

A368 Both, sort of.

If a spell needs to overcome Spell Resistance, it is noted in the line Spell Resistance, usually at the bottom of the spell descriptors, just before the in-depth description. If a spell requires an attack roll, it is noted in the description. Scorching Ray in particular needs both a ranged touch attack (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/combat/combatStatistics.htm#touchAttacks) per the description, and if it hits, you must overcome Spell Resistance as normal. Touch AC works like regular AC, but is used for effects that don't care about thick scales or armour; just making contact is enough for the effect.

Q 372: How does the Targeteer's Sniper ability (Dragon #310) interact with Improved Critical?

Sniper: When using the full attack option, the Targetteer can sacrifice attacks to gain deadly accuracy. For each attack from a full attack sacrificed the threat range of the Targetteer's weapon increases by 1. Thus if the Targetteer's ranged attack normally has a threat range of 19-20, sacrificing one attack from a full attack would increase the threat range to 18-20. A sacrificed attack only enhances the next attack. However, a Targetteer can sacrifice multiple attacks to further increase the threat range. A Targetteer cannot sacrifice all attacks from a full attack action.

Are you sure about B and C? As far as I can tell, Shields (and spiked shields) can act basically as normal weapons, except that they give you AC when you don't attack with them during a round. At the very least, their verbiage is pretty much the same as armor spikes.

At the very least, their verbiage is pretty much the same as armor spikes. No, shield bash attacks have very specific exceptions:
You can bash an opponent with a light shield or heavy shield, using it as an off-hand weapon. See Table: Weapons for the damage dealt by a shield bash. Used this way, a shield is a martial bludgeoning weapon. For the purpose of penalties on attack rolls, treat a heavy shield as a one-handed weapon and a light shield as a light weapon. Only if those conditions are met, a shield is considered a weapon. Off-hand attacks only exist if you use two-weapon fighting. On an AoO you are not fighting with two weapons.

I'm not so sure about the shield spikes anymore:
When added to your shield, these spikes turn it into a martial piercing weapon that increases the damage dealt by a shield bash as if the shield were designed for a creature one size category larger than you. You can’t put spikes on a buckler or a tower shield. Otherwise, attacking with a spiked shield is like making a shield bash attack. On the one hand the spikes make the shield a genuine martial weapon, which implies you can make normal attacks with it not just off-hand attacks, on the other other hand the rule says that those attacks are like shield bashes, except dealing more damage.

A346a: Of course. If NPCs could not have templates, the only vampires, lycanthropes, and half-fiends (to name but a few) in the game would be PCs.

The rules basis for this is the fact that Improving Monsters in MMI lists three explicitly mutually-compatible methods for advancing monsters, including NPCs; one of these is the addition of class levels, and another is templating.

One thing you have to keep in mind is that off-hand means 3 similar things in the rules. It can apply to off-hand attacks, off-hand weapons, and weapons designed to be wielded off-hand. I think armor spikes threaten. Ain't grammar grand?

Speaking of grammar:

Snowshoes from the spell compendium reads:

The affected creature can walk lightly over ice and snow without having its speed reduced. The affected creature gains a 10-foot enhancement bonus to speed and is not required to make a Balance check or Reflex save to walk on ice and snow without slipping and falling, to avoid cracking ice it walks over, or to avoid falling through cracked ice.
Q 362 Does the enhancement to move speed apply to snow and ice only? Times like this I wish WotC had some grammarians on staff. I'm trying to figure out if the spell is "Like longstrider with snow bonuses" or "like longstrider but only on snow."

Eaglejarl

A362

As written, the movement bonus is not attached to terrain. If you're wearing snowshoes, you can walk faster in forests, deserts, etc. You can also swim and fly faster, apparently.

The grammar boils down to the following logical structure:

A & B & C = true

A = "The affected creature can walk lightly over ice and snow without having its speed reduced."

B = "The affected creature gains a 10-foot enhancement bonus to speed"

C = "[The affected creature] is not required to make a Balance check or Reflex save to [do pretty much anything associated with ice / snow]."

Three separate, unconnected abilities. As written, you get them all.

Q374

Does the feat Deformity (Clawed Hands), give the character a natural attack that could be improved by Improved Natural Attack?

A 374

No. Although the weapon given by the feat bears many similarities to a natural weapon, it is a modification of the character's unarmed strike, and as such does not meet the prerequisite for improved natural attack.

It does use the phrase "Unarmed claw attack", and it is a 3.0 sourcebook that (I think) got no 3.5 update, so you could try to make a case to your DM since natural attacks/unarmed strikes had even more convoluted interaction in 3.0 than in 3.5. But as written, no.

The problem with your interpretation is that the enhancement bonus is also not tied to any movement mode. Taking this sentence alone, it doesn't specify all speeds, or land speed, or anything at all. Consequently, this "enhancement bonus to speed" is devoid of any game mechanic impact because it's an inadequate specification. With no context at all, there's no actual speed to enhance.

The alternative way to read this is that the topic sentence of the paragraph sets the context: i.e., it's specific to walking (land) speed, and also specific to snow/ice terrain.

Monks also get an enhancement bonus to their speed, with no additional specification. Clearly, the same logic would apply.

Context is important, but RAW often does not rely on it as much as one would expect.

A fit of rage lasts for a number of rounds equal to 3 + the character’s (newly improved) Constitution modifier. A barbarian may prematurely end his rage. Being unconscious doesn't create a desire to prematurely end Barbarian rage, which normally continues for a fixed duration.

You're looking for Hand of Glory.

Hand of Glory

This mummified human hand hangs by a leather cord around a character’s neck (taking up space as a magic necklace would). If a magic ring is placed on one of the fingers of the hand, the wearer benefits from the ring as if wearing it herself, and it does not count against her two-ring limit. The hand can wear only one ring at a time. Even without a ring, the hand itself allows its wearer to use daylight and see invisibility each once per day.

Domain spell lists are not class lists. Instead, spells from individual domains are added to the personal spell lists of the Clerics who take those domains.

In addition to the stated number of spells per day for 1st- through 9th-level spells, a cleric gets a domain spell for each spell level, starting at 1st. The "+1" in the entries on this table represents that spell. Domain spells are in addition to any bonus spells the cleric may receive for having a high Wisdom score.

When transitioning from Old age to Venerable, a character only loses 3 points from physical stats. Being below 7 in those scores before the transition is not enough to bring any score below 1; being below 4 in those stats is. However, as Illven notes here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=16797720&postcount=751), aging alone cannot cause this to happen. All it can do is drop ability scores to 1, making the character vulnerable to death with any subsequent ability damage or ability drain.
