Oye vei! I went and done it. I got back into DND. It's been MANY a year, but here I am, all grown up (age 27) and playing again.

Me and my cousin got married and now we got our wives into the game, and are having a fantabulous time getting back into it.

As before, I am a powergamer/optimizer. A slave to the RAW, I scour the books looking for new races and new classes. Oh boy do I ever have a good time.

Problem is, being old and set in our ways, we are so AFRAID of 3.5, and want to try and stick to what we know, which is 3.0 material. What is fun for us, is to take the most non-convroversially 'legal' stuff.... and twist it. Half-Dragon Anthropomorphic Baleen Whales, Feral Human Shaman Disciple's of Mephistopheles Shadow-lords, Half-Celestial Soul-Knives, the works!

What I would like to find, is some kind of list of official 3.0 books.

I know that generally July 2003 is when 3.5 came out, so Anything before then, obviously 3.0, but some stuff after is still clearly 3.0, like the Book of Exhalted Deeds, Draconomicon, etc..

Dragon Magazine is clearly not 3.5 until the July 2003 issue, but is there any reason I should expect the material to also somehow be 3.0 compliant beyond that? Specifically I would LOVE to see issue 313 become cannon, for reasons that are obvious.

I'm also curious as to a list of Campaign settings that are 'official' 3.0. From what I can gather, only Oriental Adventures, Kingdoms of Kalamar, and Forgotten Realms are 'cannon' as far as dnd is concerned.

Like I say, I am a RAW optimizer, and that's whats fun for me, and my cousin. We spend most (99.9%) of our time 'playing', just reading and making up the 'best' character we can imagine. What's fun is just trying to break the game the best we know how. And the fun in that, is staying within the clearly defined rules. Just including books that we like, feels like cheating, so I would like to know a way to 'prove' what is 3.0 and what is 3.5. Some kind of 'official' list... if that makes any sense.....

Edit: Tidied it up a bit. Edit 2: even in code tags, it's not "coding" correctly. Oh well. Edit 3: fixed some errors, made it into a table.

Only some of FR is 3.0; KoK is not WotC, nor are Dragonlance or L5R. Ghostwalk is 3.0. Greyhawk is also 3.0, although most of the supporting material for that is from drag mags, as I'm sure you're aware.

Early FR 3.5 books still have 3.0 remnants in them (partial actions, etc), so those are easily convertible back to 3.0. I think I remember some 3.0 stuff sneaking into BoED as well, although I could be mis-remembering.

Edit way later: New table format means that it now looks ugly and can't be sorted any more. Some of the forum updates were not.

KoK has the 'official dnd' signa on the cover... isn't that a decent way to judge cannon or not?

Is Dragon Magazine not considered 'official' either? Would a strict interpitation be only WotC products? Or ought Paizo products be included because of the extended licensing agreement they had...?

GilesTheCleric

There's "Wizards licensed" and "released by Wizards". KoK and drag mag are the former.

Edit to clarify: Here in the playground, we usually first consider wotc-released, 3.5 products-- it's easier to assume a more restrictive DM when making suggestions.

Here's my list of sources and their editions.

PlH PlH Planar Handbook 3e

say whhhhaaaaattttttt? Released July 2004, and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planar_Handbook begs to differ. However, as I love many things in the book, I'd love much also to discover that it is in fact 3e....

As far as I'm aware, the middle range of drag mags, Greyhawk, Dragonlance, KoK, and the Ravenloft Campaign Setting. There might be others.

Blue is for sarcasm. Also, please try not to double-post ^^

Edit: I'm afb from that book, but wikipedia is never wrong.

Planar Handbook is 3.5e, while Manual of the Planes is 3e and was released around the same time as Deities and Demigods. You can tell it's 3e by checking the inside cover, if it doesn't say "This product uses updated material from the 3.5 revision" just below the credits page then it's 3e.

Also, for licensed material not made by wizards, there's everything for the Legend of the Five Rings campaign setting except for the first book, Oriental Adventures (just like the first Dragonlance book was wizards made and the rest are just licensed). The L5R setting is entirely 3e legal iirc and there's some cool stuff in the Oriental Adventures handbook like the Wu Jen, Shaman and Shugenja classes and a version of Samurai that doesn't suck like the Complete Warrior one does.

I can't be sure on this, but up until now I've always thought BoED was from 3.5, not 3.0. I think it's because dndtools.eu doesn't give it's "this contains 3.0 material" disclaimer when you look at things from that book.

Huh. BoED was released after 3.5, but it doesn't have the notification at the front which is odd. It is 3.5 content even without the disclaimer at the front, maybe becauase it was a super early 3.5 book and they weren't doing that with all fo them yet. My copy of Complete Warrior doesn't have it either.

Planar Handbook is 3.5e, while Manual of the Planes is 3e

Thats what I thought, but when I read the 'What you need to play' portion on page 3, it was decidedly 3rd edition text:
Planar Handbook makes use of the information in the three D&D core rulebooks—Player’s Handbook, Dungeon Master’s Guide, and Monster Manual. In addition, it includes references
to material (primarily monster descriptions) from several D&D supplements, including Manual of the Planes, Monster Manual II, Fiend Folio, Draconomicon, Miniatures Handbook, Book of Exalted Deeds, Book of Vile Darkness, and
Epic Level Handbook

All exclusively 3rd edition books, unlike the 'what you need to play' in 3.5 books, which in fact, mention the 3.5 books specifically, not the 3.0 books....

if it doesn't say "This product uses updated material from the 3.5 revision" just below the credits page then it's 3e.
Can you confirm that Planar Handbook has such text? My copy is... missing... that first inside page....

I know that generally July 2003 is when 3.5 came out, so Anything before then, obviously 3.0, but some stuff after is still clearly 3.0, like the Book of Exhalted Deeds, Draconomicon, etc..
Those books are 3.5, albeit early 3.5. They are not 3.0, as can be established by e.g. looking at skill names (Survival rather than Wilderness Lore/Intuit Direction). There are some 3.0 relics in those books, like the Epic Dragon section in Draconomicon that was not edited well, but they use rules reflecting the revision.

The easiest way to tell if something official is 3.0 v. 3.5 (other than looking at the content) is to check the publication dates; if it was published after the 3.5 Core books (i.e. after July 2003), then it's 3.5 material. If it was published before then, it's 3.0 content. The Book of Exalted Deeds was published in October 2003, making it early 3.5 material. The Planar Handbook was printed in July 2004, which also makes it 3.5 material.

There are some weird/grey areas, like 3.5 Mind's Eye content before the XPH was released, or the books late in 3.0's run that used 3.5 rules (like Unapproachable East) but generally publication dates are a good way to tell.

EDIT: Some minor quibbles with the list presented earlier in the thread:
Planar Handbook, as previously noted, is 3.5 (published July 2004).
Champions of Ruin (published May 2005) and Champions of Valor (November 2005) are both 3.5 material.
Dragonlance Campaign Setting was published by Wizards of the Coast, and is early 3.5 (August 2003).

What does afb mean?... I couldn't figure that out.
