so, i was at a local gaming store looking for something to get my friend for his birthday when i saw this book, and knowing that our gaming group has been looking for a new system to run our old Steampunk game in, due to certain members of the group greatly disliking the d20 steampunk we were using before, so i picked it up and last night we played a sort of mini session with one other friend, we were all pretty happy with the character creation and how open ended everything was, it would allow the people in our group who lack system mastery to make whatever it is they want and has enough meat for the rest of us to be happy. we started playing, it was fun and then we ran into a snag... this game is F@#$ing lethal!

in the book it says that attacks are opposed rolls, but never tells you what you use to oppose, what we ended up figuring out is that "dodging" works like 3.5s combat expertise and that the only way to stop yourself from getting one shotted is to invest in the "protection" power and/or armor feats. All attacks auto hit and everything the defending player does is to lessen the damage dice pool of the attacker. the game ends up being nothing but rocket tag, and the amount of time it take to heal in the system is realistic, meaning characters will be out of commission for over a week most of the time.

so i come here seeking help from anyone who's used this system, are we doing something wrong? have we missed something in the rules?

Honestly, if you want Steampunk with out the high character mortality rate and less confusing rules, try Brass & Steel (http://www.rpgnow.com/product/102480/Brass-%26-Steel--A-Game-of-Steampunk-Adventure-v15?filters=170_2140_0_0_45208) or Airship Pirates (http://www.rpgnow.com/product/95166/Abney-Parks-Airship-Pirates?filters=170_2140_0_0_45208), possible Leagues of Adventure (http://www.rpgnow.com/product/103275/Leagues-of-Adventure---Core-Rules?filters=170_2140_0_0_45208) or if you can find it, Space 1889 (http://www.rpgnow.com/product/59092/Space-1889?term=space+1889&filters=170_2140_0_0_45208)
