View Full Version : Using a Cohort to Persist spells on you

At high level play (assume level 20 or thereabouts) everyone needs lots of spells. Even Fighters and Monks and other nonmagical classes are relying on their many magic items for power and protection. Barring Dispels, one of the most effective ways to consolidate all your buffs would be through the use of Persistent Spells. The DMM Cleric has found this to work excellently in the past. But what of those classes that can't even cast spells, let alone Persist them? Well, they could always get someone else to do it for them! So, what Cohorts could any character have that can then be used to apply Persistant spells to that character?

My first thought is a straight Artificer. Use (a Schema of) Metamagic Item on a staff containing the spell you want to Persist, and then have the main character somehow activate a Schema of Unfettered Heroism, perhaps using (a Schema of) Metamagic Scroll to Extend it. They'd need to have Wand Surge. Then allow them to cast the Persisted version of the staff's spell for free. You'll need a different use of Metamagic Item for every spell you want to Persist, but it should be doable. Could this be combined using more Schemas of Metamagic Item with Ocular Spell, to Persist Touch Spells?

The other thought is of course Incantatrix. Simply have the main character cast spells on themself the same way as before, via Unfettered Heroism Wand Surge on Staves, and then use your Metamagic Effect on those various spells. Arguably you could even use Cooperative Metamagic on the "casting" from the staff, doubling your uses for the day. This is probably easier, but way cheesier.

How else could a cohort reliably pump up their hero?

If you're creating a cohort just for the sake of persisting spells on you, You might as well pick a spelldancer, it's feat heavy requirements are a pain, but since all you want he to beable to do is persist spells it's the best option IMHO.

No need for wands (and their costs), no need for nighsticks (and the fear that the DM might rule them not to stack), no need to turning pool stacking (and their shenanigans).

Try something like generic spell caster (to pick up every buff off cleric, Druid and sorc/wiz list you want) with a major bloodline, entry into ear weaver and spell guard topped off with enough legacy champion to be able to drop epic level personal spells into her tapestry and don't forget that level of spell dancer to persist them. Bonus points if you can figure out how to drop iot7fv veils into the tapestry too

That Spelldancer is really something. The Perform check is way easier than even the Incantatrix's Spellcraft check, and no one complains about that. And the penalties for doing it more than you're safely able to are so slight and easily fixable that you have no excuse not to persist everything you can.

What counts as "a spell you cast?" Like, if you use a scroll or staff, does that count as a spell you're casting, and thus could modify? Or must it be a class-feature- (or racial power-)derived ability?
