View Full Version : Top Five Songs

October

I know this is sort of a spin-off of the "what is your favourite band" topic(s), but I was interested to see what sort of songs they liked by bands. For example, if somebody liked Led Zeppelin, I would be wondering which songs it was. Just got on my mind. Personally, my top five are:

Hey Hey What Can I Do by Led Zeppelin
Gabrielle by Cradle of Filth
When You Were Young by The Killers
God Save The Queen by the Sex Pistols
Jailbreak by AC/DC

I can't narrow it down to five bands, much less 5 songs, but I'll just list five of my favorites (currently a list of about 500)

Too Late for Love - Def Leppard
Separate Ways - Journey
Rock N Roll Mercenaries - Meat Loaf and Adam Perry
House Arreset - Bryan Adams
One Last Kiss - J Geils Band

1. Hung up, Madonna

4. Wait a Minute, PCD
5. Deja Vu, Beyonce...

Wow, all pop.. and White and Nerdy is #6..

"The River" by Bruce Springsteen

Hmmm. This is difficult- I have a massive amount of good songs, so this will be taxing.

So far, my 5 tops that I have without going through all of them are

Premonition of Pain- 3 Inches of Blood
The Melancholy Spirit- Agalloch
Carry- Isis
Blodhevn- Asmegin
Solitude- Candlemass

But these are only the tip of the iceberg. My three favourite bands are Agalloch, Isis and Candlemass. Goddamn I love slow, atmospheric metal. And black metal. I loves black metal.

Hmm. I've a pretty limited list o' stuff, so here goes:

1. Sarah Brightman's "Eden."
2. Rammstein's "Spielhur."
3. Nightwish's "Dead Boy's Poem."
4. Staind's "It's Been a While."
5. Golden Earring's "Twilight Zone."

Numbers two through five tend to change around depending on my mood, but Sarah Brightman's always cool in my book, especially "Eden." I've always liked the idea of a return to the beginning.

There's no way I could ever narrow down a top 5 songs...even my top 5 bands fluctuates regularily (with the exception of #1 and #2)...so what I'll do is try to name my favourite song by each band currently in the top 5.

1. Sliver - Nirvana
2. Talk Show Host - Radiohead
3. In Your Honour - Foo Fighters
4. 1979 - Smashing Pumpkins
5. Love Song - k-os
5. Gone Til November - Wyclef Jean

Sorry...#5 is a tie right now. What's that? 6 is too much? I don't care!!

3. Garmana - Herr Mannelig

5. Blind Guardian - Nightfall

List is open for revision, but if someone would ask me about any of these songs, I would most likely reply "Oh yeah, that's one of my very favorite ones". Very long list of honorable mentions will be editted in later, too.

First List of Honorable Mentions (in nor particular order)

Carl Orff - O Fortuna
Demons and Wizards - Fiddler on the Green
Don McLean - American Pie

As per everyone else... this list is rather difficult.

In no particular order and potentially subject to change. I say potentially, because some of these have never moved...

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb (best guitar solo ever)
Led Zeppelin - Gallows Pole
Nine Inch Nails - Hurt (but only live and seeing it on stage)
Phish - Jesus Left Chicago (off slip-stitch-and-pass)

That's cool. I hardly hear about them playing that cover live anymore.
Their woodstock performance looks the best. I mean, I don't totally dig the band, but that looked like an epic performance from what I've seen.

My younger brother was at that woodstock performance, and he says it was pretty cool. In Detroit, he actually stage dove into the crowd. Ball State there was a cool stage rush and he got pretty upset with a keyboard and smashed it. :smallfurious:

This is killing me. I am dead. Blargh.

For serious, though:
I tried to only have one song per band to keep things a bit more balanced and have a greater variety.

1. While My Guitar Gently Weeps - (The Beatles, but performed by George Harrison and Eric Clapton)
This has been my favorite for quite some time. It's been played over 400 times in iTunes, and it has admittedly, gotten a bit old, but I still love it. Best guitar solo of all time, incidentally.

2. More Than A Feeling - (Boston)
Tough call between this and Peace of Mind, but I love this song long time. Soaring chorus, excellent riff, and awesome solo. This is the number one song I air guitar to

3. Hey You - (Pink Floyd)
I actually found this song while looking for "Hey You" by the Exies after seeing that on Guitar Hero. This song is a completely different song, and while the other's good, this is better. Chilling, haunting and beautiful, this is a perennial favorite of mine and one of Pink Floyd's best.

4. Stairway to Heaven - (Led Zeppelin)
People say this song is over-rated. They're wrong. This song is immensely popular because it deserves to be. The lyrics are beautiful, the pacing is excellent from the low-key beginning to the powerful finish, the instrumentation fits the mood very well, and the scope is epic.

5. 23 - (Jimmy Eat World)
This is a great song. Emotional, memorable, moving. It has great instrumentals, intelligent lyrics, and well-layered vocals, with one hell of a chorus. It beat out a lot of tough competition from the Honorable Mentions to get this place.

Honorable Mentions:

-Life After Death and Taxes - (Relient K)
Ah, Relient K. You have simple instruments and you appeal far too much to the teenybopper crowd, but you do have excellent lyrics. This is one of their less-pop-more-rock songs that's really deep and actually has good vocals. This actually is my second most favorite song, but I wanted to give some of the other bands a higher spot on the charts.

-Miracles Out Of Nowhere - (Kansas)
Guitar Hero II, thanks for introducing me to Kansas. I love the complex arrangements, pacing, and vocals. This is one of the greatest, most inspirational, and instrumentally complex.

-Good Vibrations - (The Beach Boys)
Excellent vocals, great lyrics. All in all, an excellent song.

-Tangled Up In Blue - (Bob Dylan)
Excellent lyrics, and surprisingly good vocals, considering this is Bob Dylan. One of the songs I usually catch myself singing along to.

-November Rain - (Guns N' Roses)
I BOOPING LOVE THIS SONG. Just not as much as the others.

elflad, youve got good taste in music.

i cant pick a top five. maybe a top five for a tuesday, or a top five for a breakup, or a top five for a road trip, or a top five for makin' sweet sweet love down by the fire, or a top five for when i wanna thrash, or a top five for high times...

my moods vacillitate through so many different facets of who i am on any given day... and my tastes are dictated in no small degree by my moods.

I have a cover of While My Guitar Gently Weeps by the White Stripes that is pretty awesome. I'm a big JEW fan myself but I really love their pre-Bleed American album, Clarity. It has the song Goodbye Sky Harbour that is one of, maybe my favorite song of all time. I really have a hard time "ranking" my favorite music, so I don't.

Ugh... only five? This is gonna be tough. Okay, here's the list as it currently stands, although it shuffles about on a regular basis depending on what I'm actually listening to.

1. Seawinds - by Accept, but I prefer the Therion cover
2. Lemuria - Therion
3. Sleeping Sun - Nightwish
4. An Arrow from the Sun - Therion
5. Cyanide - Deathstars

Songs that didn't quite make it:

Therion - Practically anything off Lemuria or Sirius B, and their cover of Fly to the Rainbow (Scorpions)
Nightwish - Stargazers, Dead Boy's Poem, Wishmaster, Sacrament of Wilderness
Edguy - The Pharaoh, Trinidad, Land of the Miracle, Vain Glory Opera
Hammerfall - Threshold, Natural High, Knights of the 21st Century
Dimmu Borgir - Anything off Stormblast
Cradle of Filth - Nymphetamine

I'll stop there, before I end up listing every song I own. Except the ones off that one Iron Maiden album, because try as I might, I just can't bring myself to like Bruce Dickinson's abominable wailing.

I'm afraid I have terribly mainstream music tastes.

Restricting myself to popular music (My first love, folk, depends greatly on the performer, and I could go on and on about Mozart and Beethoven and Prokofiev and Rimsky-Korsakov and... but I doubt they were what was being asked about.)

Only five? Guh. Well, ask me tomorrow this list will be different, but today my list is...

Possession, Sarah MacLachlan
Clocks, Coldplay
Talk, Coldplay
This Corrosion, Sisters of Mercy
Running To Stand Still, U2

Tomorrow it might include a lot of the Cure and Depeche Mode and REM.
The next day a lot of New Order and Bauhaus and Peter Murphy. The day after that a lot of Rush and Genesis and Peter Gabriel. The day after that a lot of Toad The Wet Sprocket and more Sarah and Tori Amos and Better than Ezra, and the next day some Loreena McKennitt and Lisa Gerrard and Dead Can Dance.... You get the idea.

They're... okay. The music has a much better recording quality than, say, Darkthrone or the like, but it's also a bit... I don't know, meh. Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia is a decent enough album.

Isn't Norwegian Wood about sex? Heh, eh all their songs are thought to mean different things.

One of my favorite quotes from the beatles:
"Reporter: I'd like to direct this question to messrs. Lennon and McCartney. In a recent article, Time (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_magazine) magazine put down pop music. And they referred to "Day Tripper (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Day_Tripper)" as being about a prostitute...
Paul: Oh yeah.
Reporter: ...and "Norwegian Wood" as being about a lesbian.
Paul: Oh yeah.
Reporter: I just wanted to know what your intent was when you wrote it, and what your feeling is about the Time magazine criticism of the music that is being written today.
Paul: We were just trying to write songs about prostitutes and lesbians, that's all"

OK, then. When I think about folk I tend to think of artists rather than songs, so I'll list those (again, rather mainstream).

Gillian Welch
The Red Clay Ramblers
Simple Gifts (a local band here in central PA)
Any of a dozen or so murder ballads sung by Kristin Hersh
Michael Gulezian (mostly instrumental guitarist, only sort of folk, but his rendition of Oh Suzanna brings a tear to the eye)

Well, my top 5 based on number of plays in my iTunes would be:

1. They Never Got You - Spoon
2. Bitch Please 2 - Dr. Dre et al.
3. Buy Her Candy - Sleater-Kinney
4. Gigantic - Pixies
5. Sex & Violence - Stone Temple Pilots

1 & 2 are definitely riding the crest of a frequently-listened-to wave right now. I don't know if they'd make an all-time top 5 of mine. #3-4 would have a better chance, and maybe #5, too.

I haven't got four others, but a few of my other favorites would be Afterglow, Dance on a Volcano, Firth of Fifth, Holding out for a Hero(Strictly Bonnie Tyler only), Sqounk, Little Fuzzy Animals, Carrot Juice is Murder...The list goes on and on.

Händel, Messiah pt. III Tenor&Alto Duet "O Death, where is thy sting?"
Current recording is by Les Arts Florissants, Andreas Scholl and Mark Padmore. This is merely to name one awesome piece out of one of the best compositions ever.

Stan Rogers: Barrett's Privateers
Folk lover here, too.

Mozart: Ave Verum Corpus
Another piece that just jellifies my spine.

Suzanne Vega: The Queen And The Soldier
I missed a live performance of this in the summer, and have been kicking myself ever since.

Clement Janequin: Le Chant Des Oyseaulx
Recording by Ensemble Clement Janequin. Pure harmonic heaven.

This is just five very good ones off the top of my head. Lots and lots more could be posted, but the topic asked for five.

here's what i'm listening to right now as work tries to crush me under a massive paper bomb /sigh

Get Your Body Beat - Combichrist (if your into an electro/industrial sound at all check these guys out, especialy on stage, omg, one of the best shows ever.)

October Skies - Glis (Shaun F. who fronts this band also does, keyboards i think, for Combichrist. Good people too)

Wound - Velvet Acid Christ (i wish bryan was still touring, this whole albom would make for a great stage show)

Heroin, she said - Wolfsheim (reminds me of a close friend, is about the mellowist thing i have here at work)

Filth God - Panzer AG (another industrial sound, much more aggresive than Combichrist since that is a more clubish sound. Both fronted by Andy LaPleuga of Icon of Coil, everything that man touches is full of wintastic awesome, but i may just be biased. Its not a lot of musicians who invites whoever is in the lobby when he leaves to come party with him and the band.)

Top Five Songs? Wow, hard enough to pick my top 5 bands, let alone just five songs? I guess I'll give it a try. Not gonna be easy though, I have deep affections for a lot of songs. I guess this would be considered my current favourite 5 songs, but will likely change in a few weeks, so I may actually end up changing this or posting again sometime :)

In Absolutely No Particular Order:
Artist - Song - Album

Aesop Rock - Battery - Labor Days
Atmosphere - Get Fly (What if Jesus Forgot to Put You on the Guest List?) - You Can't Imagine How Much Fun We're Having
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here -Wish You Were Here
God Forbid - Better Days - Gone Forever
Faith No More - Last Cup of Sorrow - Album of the Year

In no particular order:

Red Dragon Tattoo- Fountains of Wayne

The Way- Fastball

Bohemian Rhapsody- Queen

The Garden of Allah- Don Henley

Tribute- Tenacious D

And a runner-up because I couldn't exclude this:

TNT (Bon Scott Version)- AC/DC

March of the Black Queen -- Queen
I'm such a huge mark for Queen. I just can't help it.

Wasted Youth -- Meatloaf
The Prologue, and then the song itself -- soooo good!

Lucky! Cha Cha Cha! -- Mini Moni
You will never hear a more upbeat, happy song.

Klavier -- Rammstein
Just a beautiful song.

It's a Beautiful Day -- Queen
A recent favorite. I saw Queen + Paul Rodgers last year, and they played this the WHOLE time, until the concert began. Good memories!

Don't kill me, don't kill me, I could sooner pick my 5 favorite people...
That said, I'm about to go through my music library.

Father and Son, by Cat Stevens. At the risk of sounding like a broken record. (or a CD player that jumps.) Actually I was sitting here grappling with which of my Cat Stevens favorites to pick, but I figured that "Father and Son" had better be the one since it's the song that got me liking Cat in the first place.

Indian Ocean, by Yusuf. Okay, I know, I'm cheating. But I like the song and since it's under a different name...

Behind the Veil, by Nothin' to See. There's nothing like having a song written for you, really. My dad wrote this when I was twelve and being (ahem) difficult. He says "I put the headphones on her and said listen to this. Halfway through the second verse she started crying, I was her best friend in the world for months afterwards. As a parenting tool, I highly recommend songwriting." I don't know about that ("best friend in the world"?) but the song's pretty cool.

Joseph's Song, by David Hunt. Pretty song, pretty harmonies, and I know the guy who wrote it.

Boston and St. John's, by Great Big Sea. I went through a phase where I set this song on repeat and just listened to it over and over and over. Now I'm on the Cat Stevens thing, but I still really like "Boston and St. John's".

How bizarre. My music tastes are very eclectic, and yet all of the songs I've got on this list would fit into the folk-rock catagory. That's pretty bizarre, actually. Huh.

No Quarter, by Led-Zeppelin. I get goosebumps every time I hear this song.

The Cynic, by Kashmir. A masterpiece of a song. Starts out rockin' but then it quiets down. Good ice breaker.

Another Brick in the wall, by Pink Floyd. If you wanna chill, listen to this song. (Or any Pink Floyd songs)

One, by Metallica. The greatest song that band have ever made.

The Aftermath, by Kashmir. A quiet song, it almost makes me cry sometimes.
