Note: THIS SCENARIO WILL NOT HAPPEN
Pardon the possible ridiculousness of this idea, but I wanted to bounce it off of other people and it could be an interesting character study.
On 934 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0934.html) Tarquin threatened to kill everyone and cut off Elan's hand. Suppose he actually pulled this off, and now the two of them are standing in the wreckage and carnage. Elan is completely shell-shocked, full Heroic BSOD (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HeroicBSOD). Tarquin looks confident again now that he has reestablished control. Before he can leave Elan to mourn and brood, however, Elan speaks up after a prolonged silence. "I guess...I'll go home now. I bet Mom is worried." And he starts walking away.
How does Tarquin react? By walking away, Elan has made everything Tarquin has done since the two of them met completely meaningless. Malack died. He killed his other son. He has earned the eternal disappointment and resentment of his son (Elan doesn't really do hatred). All of this for nothing. Would this "defeat" Tarquin?
