This nervous-looking human is garbed in a drab square-shouldered outfit and mumbling quietly to himself. Every once in a while, he timidly brushes a spot on his cloak, or adjusts its clasp, or runs his fingers through his short black curls, always the same motion, as if the slightest deviation might somehow imbalance the world around him.

"It doesn't make any sense."
"Does everything have to make sense, Monk?"
"Well… yeah, it kinda does."

Adrian Monk is one of the most brilliant - and neurotic - investigative minds of his time. Struck with a barely-manageable tangle of fears, compulsions, and nervous tics, his instability regardless gives him an amazing insight into the scene of any incident, any crime, just about anything at all.

Monk is roughly 180 pounds and stands 5 1/2 feet tall. He speaks Common. Monk is nearly always followed by a hired assistant who aids him in both his investigations and his neuroses.

COMBAT
In combat, Monk can be found most often standing very still and hoping that nothing touches him, though on very rare occasions he has been known to stand up for himself - just not very effectively.

It's A Gift (Ex): Monk gains a +8 bonus to Listen, Search, and Spot checks. He may make a Search check to discover anything within 10 feet, even if he is not actively searching for something.

...And A Curse (Ex): Monk's uncanny awareness is not a product of any natural talent, but rather his crippling obsessive-compulsiveness focused on cleanliness, order, and structure. Whenever Monk encounters anything in his immediate environment which defies perfection, he is compelled to either set it right (in the case of simple disorder) or avoid it entirely (in the case of utter messes). A successful Will save will allow Monk to tolerate a 'hostile' environment, though he will still be uncomfortable around it; Monk may take 10 on this save. The save DC ranges from 10 for minor imperfections (an uneven row of jars, a pencil on the floor) to 30 for severe messes (spilled sewage, an overturned cart of fruit). Failing his save by more than 5, or being restrained from his compulsion to clean, results in Monk being shaken for the rest of the encounter.

Monk does not officially work for any city watch or investigative team; he can be taken on as a hireling, as long as his patrons can tolerate his unusual habits.

(Cameo for a mystery/humor adventure, anyone? )
