View Full Version : [PF] Ghosts get Climb as a class skill? WHY?!

I was looking through some Pathfinder material today, and noticed an oddity:

The Ghost template adds Climb as a class skill.

I'm confused. WHY? They get a perfect fly speed out of becoming a ghost, and lose their land speed completely. When will a ghost ever make a climb check for it to matter?

Copypaste from the undead template. Since they cannot interact with the physical world, it's impossible for them to climb.

When it possesses someone using Malevolence. It can't fly while inhabiting a physical body so being able to climb would be very useful.

Copypaste from the undead template.

Also true the class skills granted to ghosts are the same possessed by the undead type.

Ah, that works, at least a bit. Thanks. Still seems odd, though. The copy/paste thing makes a lot of sense too.

Isn't a possessed person climbing walls a trope? I remember it from the extended cut of the Exorcist.

Still, how is a ghost practicing its climbing skills?

Except that D&D Ghosts don't add Climb to their class skills. This particular aspect is an artefact of Pathfinder, so it's Paizop (http://paizo.com) in this case.

Knowledge? Climbing, like most physical activities also is trained and 'learned'. If you know how to ride a bike, you could argue that you still could use your ranks of Ride (Dex) with your new physical attribute.

By possessing people.

In 3.5 it is similar, in that Ghosts get Move Silently as part of the usual package of Intelligent Undead class skills, even though they never need to make Move Silently checks.

...

Odd, that didn't make the Ghost Entry on the SRD (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/ghost.htm) nor the Undead Type (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/typesSubtypes.htm#undeadType) on the SRD. Got a reference on how Ghosts suddenly get Move Silently? It may have been errata'd. Granted, D&D 3.5 has a rather lot of it's own quirks, but still....

It is, actually. As a guy who run's Pathfinder, I find it rather useful, as well as pretty funny, because it's one of those things you only realize make's sense when one is building an encounter.

Hmmm...

I may have confused them with something else. It was +8 Move Silently along with the +8 Listen, Spot, Hide, and Search, but maybe it was on some other incorporeal creature. Or maybe it was a running joke at some point in my group? Dunno.

Check the Lich. For them, though, it makes an amount of sense.
