View Full Version : Red Wizard Evoker (Energy Affinity Force)

Ok i have a player being a Red Wizard focused in evocation further focused in force. His charter name is statos. His build is Wizard 5 (evoker, energy affinity force), Red Wizard 2 (maybe going to 5th), Force Missile Mage 5 (he wants it maxed for flavor) and arcane savant 5 (maxed for flavor). His story is he is specializing in evocation force magic (he views it as true magic and the strongest kind), and this is his sole priority to increase.

Feats
1st level wizard bonus: scribe scroll
Background: spellcasting prodigy
Flaw: Primitive Spellcaster
Region: Mind over body
Human Bonus: Repeat Spell
1st: combat casting
3rd level: still spell
Wish: evoker's mark
Acquired from red wizard master: tattoo focus
Wizard bonus 5th: energy substitution
6th level: maximize spell

Is there any other spellcasting classes focused on force or evocation? Any feats recommended feats? Basically is there anything at all to increase his build further?

as you are already doing energy sub, **magic missile can be any thing anyways with force mage**

How about Born of the Three Thunders?

You can be casting spells with Magic Missile [Force,Electricity,Sonic,Acid]


Not sure if that is abusable or a handicap, but could be interesting.


At 5th level 3 missles, with the other stuff, you could have a wizard that has large amounts of widen or magic missile choas, you could be stunned wide swath of folks.

Ya he is building the character mainly to abuse magic missile to high hells, but also focus on his other force spells. As far as i could tell i had all i could find to increase his force abilities.

You have to many feats. Regional and Background feats both take normal feat slots, you don't get them for free.The same goes for Tattoo Focus.
Also, Energy Substitution only allows fire, cold, acid and electricity. It won't do anything with Magic Missile since [Force] is not an energy descriptor.

Oh i forgot to explain the feat situation. I allowed background and regional to count as separate feats if the player's could create a solid background story of their characters explaining the feats in a realistic manor pertaining to DND. Basically he got them free for having a great backstory.

Energy Sub wasnt for magic missile, and he got tattoo focus through story. I reward player's for great roleplaying.

Aw thanks for pointing something out, Force is descriptor not a energy type which in turn doesn't change his build because he wants to change it to sonic then. But would like to point out energy sub and the sonic focus both with stack with force missile mages ability to add an energy type to their magic missiles.

Force is not an energy type. Energy Affinity (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/specialistWizardVariants.htm#evokerVariants) clearly states that the only valid choices are acid, cold, electricity, fire, or sonic.


The best way to improve this build would be to start out Wizard 5/ Red Wizard 10, and get the feat Reserves of Strength from the Dragonlance Campaign Setting. Circle Magic boosts his caster level to 40, so his Magic Missile shoots twenty-one missiles with Reserves of Strength. Use Simulacrum to make copies of himself to contribute spells for circle magic.

Once he hits level 20 he makes new simulacrums, each of which is a Wizard 5/ Red Wizard 5. They all do circle magic together taking turns being the circle leader and each one uses it to heighten a single spell to 20th level. They each contribute a 20th level spell when he's the circle leader, he can throw a 0-level spell into the pot and still come out with 180 spell levels to spend. 20 goes toward boosting his caster level, and the rest can Empower+Maximize 32 spells. His magic missiles will deal around 115+10d4 damage, from a 1st level spell slot.

Nice idea. And fixed that, just add sonic to him. No biggy he likes his sound lance scroll. Anyways that a drastic change but he will not get rid of his force missile mage of arcane savant because of his story, he wants them because they are only force using classes. But he has 3 level of red wizard that could be switched for something else.

Energy Missile (Ex): A force missile mage becomes intimately attuned to the energies that compose the spell magic missile and may alter them in significant ways. Starting at 2nd level, a force missile mage may add either the acid, cold, electricity, or fire descriptor to any magic missile he casts. The type of energy added to the spell is chosen at the time of casting, and you can choose a different type of energy each time you cast magic missile. This altered descriptor affects all missiles created by a single casting of magic missile. Although still a force spell, any magic missile altered in this way deals additional damage against vulnerable creatures and less damage against creatures with related resistances and immunities.

wait, this does not state the damage type is changed, only that it effects creatures as if it was the energy. Does the slightly different wording matter?

Might work elven spell lore into his build, to give his magic missiles a energy type, allowing energy sub to working alongside it.
Edit: Nope energy sub still not work.
