I'm sorry, but what exactly is a gutter mage? I think I may have failed my Knowledge (D&D 3.5) check, because nothing of that name comes to mind.

Sadly i don't know much, 3rd party stuff is generally poo-pooed.
wasn't it like a rogue/caster? does your DM allow this source?

hopefully someone here will know much more than i will

since you start at level 8 you could do a rogue/wizard (or sorcerer) build...
possibly like an Arcane Trickster Prc after that

If you're going for a sneaky mage like character you could consider the Beguiler (http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=363.0), Spellthief (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44299), Psychic Rogue (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=234327), or Factotum (http://brilliantgameologists.com/boards/index.php?topic=2720.0).
Otherwise here is a handbook (http://brilliantgameologists.com/boards/index.php?topic=1240) on mixing Rogues and Spellcasters.
