You know how certain spellcasting classes get extra spells per day 'cause of high ability modifiers. What am I saying, 'course you do..

Anyway, I've yet to read a rule where it says you cannot gain access to higher level spell slots opened up this way when you're a lower level.

Eg. an 18 int 1st level Wizard gets an additional 4th level spell slot. If he can copy a 4th level spell to his spell book, why can't he prepare and cast it at level 1?

So what's the rule here? Can anyone point it out to me?

Probably because he does not get access to it until the relevent Spell casting Level.

Abilities And Spellcasters

The ability that governs bonus spells depends on what type of spellcaster your character is: Intelligence for wizards (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/classes/sorcererWizard.htm#wizard); Wisdom for clerics (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/classes/cleric.htm), druids (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/classes/druid.htm), paladins (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/classes/paladin.htm), and rangers (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/classes/ranger.htm); or Charisma for sorcerers (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/classes/sorcererWizard.htm#sorcerer) and bards (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/classes/bard.htm). In addition to having a high ability score, a spellcaster must be of high enough class level to be able to cast spells of a given spell level.

Emphasis mine.

Still, JackMann that wouldn't prevent him preparing Lower Level Spells in those Slots...

The SRD tables do not make it clear, but the PHB ones do. You only get Bonus Spell Slots at the Levels for which they are appropriate.

yeah if that was the case a maximise ray of enfeeblement or heighten charm person would realy make a first level wizard a nasty peice of work.

1st level wizard with an 18 int. can now cast, count em, 6 1st level spells. Seems a bit unbalanced to me.

5.

1 for being a wizard.
1 bonus first.
1 bonus second, converted to first.
1 bonus third, converted to first.
1 bonus fourth, converted to first.

Except you can't do that, according to the PHB. You can however, according to the SRD.

Stupid inconsistencies.

But, at the end of the day, I'm sure that Wizards of the Coast can sleep the sleep of the elves with the good job they've done.

You mean the reverie of elves. But isn't PHB the sole source of spell rules for characters anyway?

MrNexx

Nope. If you read the SRD, I mean the sleep of the elves. There's nothing about them not sleeping in there.

Well anyway if they're wizards they have to rest 8 hrs to prepare their spells.
