In 3.5, a cohort's maximum level included any level adjustment she might have. So having Half Celestial on your cohort meant she was never closer to your level than -6.

In pathfinder, there's no such thing as level adjustment. How would that same half-celestial cohort interact with Leadership?

Half Celestial is a template with CR +1-3. A half-celestial PC would then have an "Level Adjustment" of +1 to +3, and the cohort should follow the same rules.
