Stopping in the middle of a fight

Quick question here. I am fighting my way through a stack of monsters. Can I stop at any time without penalty? (Other than not being able to pick up loot, cause its under the remaining stack of monsters.)

Yes. If you win a battle you may end your turn and are not required to face the next monster. As you mention, the loot stays in the room under the existing monsters, but sometimes just getting that top monster for the XP is all you really need.
