View Full Version : An idea on which I'd like some feedback

The idea is to use the generic spellcaster from Unearthed Arcana' with a few tweaks.
To be a spellcaster:
-There is no division between divine and arcane magics, so you can learn any spell as long as it is not in your banned school.
-One must pick a special school.
-Whenever you learn spells, you must pick at least one spell from your special school.
-Whenever you learn a new level of spells, the first spell you learn must be from your special school.
-When you pick your special school, you must never learn spells from that schools opposite (abjuration/evocation, conjuration/transmutation, divination/illusion, necromancy/enchantment)
-Instead of the bonus feats, the spellcaster gains the special abilities of the specialist mages from Unearthed Arcana (see page 59 of that book to know what I'm talking about)
-Increase the spells known at each level as such:

Any thoughts?

Expect a lot of Necromancy specialists and a lot of Abjuration specialists. Maybe a few Divination specialists.

Basically, the fact that each school has a specifc barred schools means the players may end up picking their speciality based off what they can afford to lose.

Besides that, this seems like a cool little variant. Nice job.
