Okay. so

I have a wizard being eaten alive in a swarm. . . they occupy the same space. The sorcerer casts a fireball modified by selective spell on the wizards space excluding the wizard.

The wizard is safe from the fireball because of selective spell
BUT

does the spell incinerate the swarm and leave the wizard unharmed as though he were immune to the spell.

or

does the spell incinerate the area around the wizard leaving him and the swarm unharmed because they shared the same space.

Re-read Selective Spell (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/metamagic-feats/selective-spell-metamagic):

When casting a selective spell with an area effect and a duration of instantaneous, you can choose a number of targets in the area equal to...These targets are excluded from the effects of your spell.

You do not need to choose spaces/squares, you can simply say "Wizard is immune, the swarm eats firebally goodness".

Seeing as pretty much every swarm I can think of has a space of 10' even if the wizard's whole square was excluded then the swarm should still get toasted.

Isn't the better question how a selective summons swarm would work?

You summon a swarm of bats, rats, or spiders (your choice), which attacks all other creatures within its area. (You may summon the swarm so that it shares the area of other creatures.) If no living creatures are within its area, the swarm attacks or pursues the nearest creature as best it can. The caster has no control over its target or direction of travel.

The spell summons a swarm. But does this grant the selective spell metamagic to controlling it also to ignore targets?

Since Summon Swarm is neither instantaneous nor an area spell, Selective Spell cannot be applied to it at all.
