Civ 5 Multiplayer 3: Swimsuit Edition

So I saw the other Civ 5 threads and wanted to see if there was still interest to create a new one. I've gone ahead and set up a new game. I havent decided on map type yet I figure we can vote on that in here once you join. I say we should all play random civs but if a majority of the people who sign up want to do specific civs than I'll change that. The invite links are below.

For map type, I rarely play large islands but realy like it, so I'm up for that. Continents+ would however not be a problem.

The (minor) problem with large islands is that Civs that don't really benefit much from going naval-technology can end up feeling a bit shafted just because of the map. Not a major issue, but it can be somewhat annoying if you get a Civ that draws it's strength from being expansive and being trapped on an island that will only support 3 cities comfortably.

Just means you need to be more aggresive with your expansion is all. :smallwink:

I had that worry, but I was thinking that that just provides a reason to allow the picking of Civs.

Whats wrong with the Huns? I won my first BNW game playing as the Huns with a cultural victory. I was even sharing a continent with Siam, Persia and more importantly Genghis Khan. :smallamused:

THank you. As it turned out, the problem was with a redundant net protection service (Bullguard) I had running. Once I removed it (still have Norton) it worked just fine. So far.

Our current location supports many avenues of expansion, and we will be starting first with Plantation technology. The city's position is fortunately well-defended, although I think I will be pursuing a tourism strategy regardless, Brazil looks to favor that.

Send out a few scoots and you'll manage a decent use of it. You also have a good chance of founding the world council if you make the printing press a priority.

Some of the larger islands might have more than one civ on them, if I remember correctly.

Regarding the Polynesian UA, I'd have to say that their early game advantage isn't that clear in a Large Islands map, since the various barbarians camps inaccessible to Civs from the beginning often spawns loads of barbarian ships that will kill any unescorted units trying to cross the oceans. So it'll require an amount of naval investment to actually utilize the Polynesia UA to any serious degree on this map.

24 hours seems best as today is a good example- my turn started at 1.30am and I'll be available to play at 6 tonight earliest.

24 hours have worked fine for any other games I'm in. Getting skipped and having the AI take your turn isn't the end of the world in any case :)

I initially moved my settler one space to the left aiming to get earlier access to the two sheep while maintaining access to the ocean, however I have now realised that I am bordering a lake not the ocean. :smallsigh: Despite this Vienna should have a decent production output once it gets rolling, though I will need to found a second city actually on the coast soon.
Kuala Lumpur will be useful for some early trade and possible annexation with my civ ability later.
Long-term plans wise, I'm going to be avoiding Culture victory as we have Brazil, Polynesia and Poland in the game who should all be able to outpace me. Instead I'm currently hoping to head for Science as there is no dedicated science civ. I'm not ruling out diplo or conquest, however I worry about the validity of diplo in multiplayer and I've never been particularly good at conquest.

Also I'll try to remember to turn off resource icons for future screenshots. >.>

Sometimes it takes a few minutes for the client to register it's no longer your turn. After that it should sort itself out.

Indeed. I apologize for being part of the problem, my compy doesn't always like to keep GMR up and running for some reason so I don't often get my turn notifications till close to the end of the turn timer rather often. :smallredface::smallsigh:

It shouldn't, but when you have a tolder that likes to smash everything on your keyboard because she likes how things pop up when she does so, I'm just happy getting my settings back to normal afterwards, let alone making sure all my programs are running properly.

(Apparently the rites we performed had nothing to do with appeasing it- Mitixl explained, with a great deal of patience and embarassment, the terrible and unforseen link between sex and pregnancy. We're still adjusting to the shock).

This is an open response to Brazil We offered to split colonization along the lines you suggested but you refused any discussion on those issues. Now that we have begun expanding ahead of you you claim that we infringe on your space. If you wish to enforce demands on others perhaps you should be open to considering them for yourself. If you use force to enforce demands on us than the world will know you for the aggressors you clearly are. Despite your unreasonableness in this area we are still willing to come to an agreement to avoid war. However simply demanding concessions from us without agreeing to any yourself will not lead to fruitful discussion.

Polynesia has taken my capital. This is nothing short of disastrous. In fact, looking at the map, I have no idea how this happened. Why did Persia settle to the south at all? Especially on a worthless 1 land tile surrounded by water dump?

I hadn't been following the spectator posts in this thread, so I'm completely ignorant as to how this happened. I can't imagine how Polynesia, even with embarking unlocked from turn 1, managed to sneak a settler over here first and grab this spot, including the Rock of Gibraltar! Prior Persian management seems to have been asleep at the wheel. Was Persia an AI from turn 1 or something? Did Polynesia bum rush this civ right out the gate?

Moving on, the good news is that this awesome spot is right near my other cities. Look at that! Triple Fish, Crabs, Horses, Sheep, and two Stone!?! All within reach of one city? Why the hell was the stupid desert rock settled when this spot was right next door!?! I have to get this spot if I want any hope of not being in last place forever, which is how I "win", btw, at least in my own eyes. At this point I have no hope of taking first, but I can do my best to not be last. I am, of course, extremely nervous that someone else will try to claim this spot. 10 turns is the quickest I can get a settler out; that is a long time to wait. Hopefully it is quick enough.

Here is another solid spot; almost no matter where you found on this island, you can get access to Lake Victoria. If I can get the military to clean up the barb camps and get a settler over here too, I might stand a chance of having a few decent to great cities. My problem isn't a lack of good land to settle; it's that my existing land is pretty pitiful, my nearest neighbor is an apparently aggressive military runaway, and time is not on my side.

In terms of culture, I have a complete Tradition tree, which is nice. I forgot to take a screenshot of my Tech Tree, but I'm mostly near the end of the Classical/beginning of the Medieval. My only Medieval tech is Theology, and I imagine as the game progresses I'm going to fall desperately behind. My army is two Triremes, which are far flung scouting the map, and one nearby Immortal. So nothing, really. I can only hope MagentaWolf's Polynesia doesn't come a knocking. It would be kind of a **** move to recruit me into the game only to swiftly eliminate me, but you never know.

My only real hope, and the only thing I can do to really affect and interact with the game right now, as I have to wait many turns for anything to build on these tiny island cities, is diplomacy. Even there, I have no Luxury resources to level, or anything to offer, really. I'm in dead last place and honestly a stronger empire would be pretty justified in wiping me out to secure access to those excellent spots nearby. This will be tricky. In a normal MP mindset, the original player of Persia would be within their rights to concede in this situation; they're pretty much done. I'm not the greatest player, but I'm still going to give it my all to pull out of this nosedive and get Persia flying again.

Here's Palenque. It's nothing fancy, but nothing too terribly shabby. I have NC already built, which is nice. I also seem to have been focusing on buildings, so I've got the major ones knocked out. I don't have any food resources, which makes the 11 pop city a little surprising. I'll have to start working my worker something fierce to catch up my tiles.

And here's Tickal. This almost makes me less happy I think. More silver, and some iron. There's also a sheep in there, and a single fish. This city however, is obviously much later than Palenque, and is a bit too close to it for my liking. We'll have to see what we can do about fixing this thing up.

It does my heart good to see another enterprising leader in the face of the Oncoming Doom. With this change in management, we feel it necessary to extend Diplomatic relations to your civilization once more. The Iroquois offer me friendship and dyes. It's a nice thing to get for just saying hello, but I did almost turn it down for fear of it being perceived as unfair; as people just giving me stuff because I'm behind and vulnerable to potential aggression from Polynesia. If The Iroquois wanna use me as a cold war puppet against Polynesia, that is fine by me, so long as they send me enough support to keep me alive. But I'm not against working for Polynesia either. I'm going to probably end up the junior partner in some alliance because otherwise eliminating me makes too much sense, as Magentawolf's missive duly notes.

The Capital got a Lighthouse up, which drastically improved the value of the tiles around it. It is still a pretty not good city, but I have to work with what I've got.

My new city. Once I get the Lighthouse up, and fishing boats down on the three fish, this place will grow like a weed. It's already doing fairly well for itself. It just needs time for the population and border growth to do their things.

Unfortunately Polynesia got to this site first. I'm always going to wonder whether I should have had both my cities spamming settlers to try and get more land rather than working to develop the cities I did had. Maybe it was feasible to get here before Polynesia and I just dropped the ball. Maybe not. Either way, I'm pretty much surrounded by other empires now with little room to grow. It's gonna be a tough road ahead.

That is true, and I have to remember in my gloom and doom that not every spot has been snatched up yet. But you can't go too far east before you start hitting Polish turf, and they're the absolute number 1 power in the game with two size 14 cities. The shallow coastal water also makes this a little deceptive, as there is a big dead spot of deep ocean to my immediate east. The band of coast wraps around to the south east, and so is generally less than optimal tundra. I'm already trying to pick out a new settlement spot to rush for, but I'm also trying to get sea caravans up for some gold income.

I had a city that didn't have any necessary buildings to build when I completed Radio, so I set it to build the Tower thinking it'd generate some cash if I failed or snag a nice all around Wonder if I didn't. I also got the Culture and Tourism numbers mixed up in my head when I selected it. I thought it gave +12 Culture, not Tourism :smallyuk:

So it's past turn 200. So it's probably time to start realistically looking at victory types.

Conquest is probably right out. We're all isolated, and I can't see anyone pulling ahead and conquering all of us. Plus whoever tries would probably get ganged up on by the other three players.

Diplomacy is out most likely as well. If anything I'm the closest thanks to a high GPT, but I'm not sure I could swing enough city states for a diplo victory.

Then comes Science. It's possible I suppose, but I'm in the tech lead, and don't have plans to rush buy a bunch of great scientists, and only 63% literacy. In GMR 4, We have about ten more turns, and I have about a dozen literacy percentages.

Tourism and time seems to be the most likely. Of which I'm in the lead for both.

Our People is one of a more industrious nature. Now, we understand that your people are more artistic, we just think that it would be best to let such proposals lie.

tl;dr Honestly, most of the other proposals possible would be non-troubling to me. Any other proposal would have been fine by us, even if we didn't agree with it. We find this proposal however, quite concerning.

In regards to the WIF Proposal, we had no agreement to go 'all-in' on the proposal, and found the likelihood of the entire rest of the world rising up and voting against it very unlikely. We felt that our delegates were better served in other matters. As you can see from the counts, we were not wrong.

We can point out which of our cities would the best place for you to be leaked scientific information, and should push come to shove, would most likely be willing to go toe to toe with them. It would likely be best to wage war on two fronts. However, this would be a thing that would need time to prepare for. We are just finishing up blueprints for a new military weapon that will change the world forever, and are working on another that even we are afraid of the repercussions of. Further, we have arrangements with Poland that we can not just abandon.

tl;dr I'd need time to prep a military force, and have a Declaration of Friendship with Poland currently. Just finished Flight, and am deciding soon whether or not to beeline Atomic Theory.

We are willing to discuss a buying price for the rights to these 'hidden sites,' so long as none of them are beneath our Academies, and we would vastly prefer to avoid any that may be in our Forest tiles as well. What tiles are your people looking to excavate?
