Hello!

What happens when a character has levels in magus and wizard, with regards to spell combat and other Magus class features?

By my reading as long as the spell being used is on the magus list you don't have to be using your magus slots for it to be usable with spell combat and spell spellstrike. I'm pretty sure by RAW that's fine, but I'm wondering if it's maybe too pedantic a reading that wouldn't fly in practice.

I don't believe the same applies for the magus ability to cast in armour mind, as the wording is 'cast magus spells' which I take to mean cast as a magus.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

1) Spell Combat works on Bard/Sorcerer/Wizard/Summoner spells that are also on the magus list.

As a full-round action, he can make all of his attacks with his melee weapon at a –2 penalty and can also cast any spell from the magus spell list with a casting time of 1 standard action (any attack roll made as part of this spell also takes this penalty).

2)

A multiclass magus still incurs the normal arcane spell failure chance for arcane spells received from other classes.

There is also a magus ability you can take at 6th level that makes another spellcasting class's spells count as magus spells for spell combat.

The armor thing is why most magus/wizard builds use kensai for the magus side.

I don't believe this is the intended function of Spell Combat, but RAW you have a valid argument.

I did a little research on the Paizo forums and found these (http://paizo.com/threads/rzs2nh3g?Magus-Spell-Combat-wording#1) threads (http://paizo.com/threads/rzs2nch3?Magus-spell-combat-question#5) debating the issue - the jury (ie the FAQ) is still out.

Thanks for the help guys! Really useful info there.

To be fair the phraseology 'spell from the magus list' seems a little odd if they didn't intend to allow other sources of casting to use it. There's no reason not to use the more elegant 'magus spell' otherwise.

Or just maybe you don't rules-lawyer-proof every sentence in a normal roleplaying book? Remember, it's a rulebook, but it's not the law.

Hey I'm just trying to extrapolate some kind of RAI here, not trying to break the game or anything.
