I ruined MY OWN THREAD! Based on my OTHER THREAD ABOUT SPELLING!

Oh, the irony!

I don't get it. He wrote the letter, so?

Clearly, his last name would have never been revealed if it did not have massive cosmic importance to the strip.

Therefore, we must pose our theories.

A classic case of si tacuisses, philosophus mansisses...

And I only pray now there's no mistake in that.

As for the thread: I think there's nothing special in that name, it just fleshes out the character a bit more by evading "the DM/Author of this classic fantasy setting was too lazy to think of a second name of a side character..."

You're trying to make a point about the Giant creating irrelevant details for his strip ...

... by giving the name of a character 7-800 strips before that character would be introduced?

Seems to me you have the case backwards.

Here's my attempt at this fascinating topic. :smallwink:

"Shew" is as in "show," by the old spelling (as in "shewbread").

"Dank" is like the Swedish "dank," meaning "marsh."

-er is a suffix indicating an individual related to these activities.

Therefore, a "shewdanker" is someone who shows travelers the way through a treacherous marsh. Miron was born to a family of hereditary swamp guides, but got so sick of the damp that he went to the driest spot that he could find, a desert.

The sarcastic nature of this thread aside, I do think the etymology of the names of the Laurinear Guild is rather interesting. No American Roys or Haleys here: Laurin with an I, two Roman names, Miron, Jacinda, and Unknown. The backstory of that last guy being that he turned evil out of rage because his parents named him Unknown.

It occurs to me that "Shewdanker" might also apply to a flasher who lives in a marsh. Good to see that my "Craft Disturbing Mental Image" skill points aren't going to waste. :smallwink:

But yes, the names are a bit more "international" from an American viewpoint. Though admittedly, Belkar isn't exactly a name you run across every day in New Jersey or Minnesota, either.

He's not Yourron, I can tell you that much.

Clearly this means that Miron is more important in the grand scheme of things than Tarquin. Not only was he explicitly named long before people had started praising (or cursing) the name of Tarquin, but he's got a last name, which obviously means that he's much less likely to die (Witness Daigo and Kazumi).

This clearly means that MITD is a Shew, and Miron will appear at the last moment to dank him.

I like this theory quite a bit better than either of mine.

Some people just like danking shews. Don't judge!

No, but it is how a bad joke works. Not every topic gets the "A" material. Gotta put the "D-" material somewhere.
