Is there any way at all to do this? I seem to recall reading a feat that granted a meager amount of low-level spells to a character - kinda similar to Wild Talent from the XPH but for casting instead of manifesting (and actually allowing casting, unlike Wild Talent :smalltongue:) - but I can't find it anywhere. Can anyone lend a hand?

Complete Arcane has general feats that let characters gain 3 spell like abilities that cast at 1st level.

Magical Training (Player's Guide to Faerun) gives you a spellbook and a few cantrips.

You are probably thinking of Magical Training, which grants a character a spellbook and some cantrips. There's stinky cheese out there to "ladder up" to 9th level spells, while still at level 1, but we won't cover it.

My personal favourite way of splicing magic onto an otherwise mundane build has to be a tie between SLA templates (most notably Phrenic or Half-Fey) plus Magic in the Blood, or a 2-level Divine Crusader dip and a gish PrC thereafter.

Aha, that's the one. It kinda defeats the theme I was going for (unlocking hidden magic ability à la the sorcerer) but that is indeed the one I thought of. Thanks!

Dragonmark feats (Eberron Campaign Setting & Dragonmarked) give you some very specialised spell-like abilities. They might fit your concept of unlocking magic within you a little better.

I can probably rephrase it (Aberrant Dragonmark, I mean) to scrub away that Eberron fluff, but yes, that would work pretty nicely!

I know of using psomething apprentice to grab a level 2 spell slot, but I've never heard of the rest.

Extra Slot to get 1st level slot.
Get Earth Spell feat, Heighten 0 level Spell. Now you can get Extra Slot to get 2nd level slot. Rinse & repeat until you get 9ths.

Definitely go with dragonmarks. Even without taking levels in the classes that advance the abilities you can get some righteous powers.
