View Full Version : D12s are the best

I don't know why I am saying this, but out of all the dice, D12s are the most satisfying to roll.
watch one sometime, It bounces around flipping between numbers multiple times, there is never a particular angle that rolling it on would give you and edge. compare this to the other dice, D4,D8,and D10 never really roll, they kinda just fall on the number. Of course D6 tend to go either way, D20 and higher is more like rolling a ball,

I never really considered the way that the dice roll. Maybe someone should make a D12 shadowrun game :P

Actually, D6s in particular can be "dropped", causing them to land on a specific face, giving a specific result. This is why gambling usually involves throwing the dice against e.g. the edge of a "deep" table, or at least against the wall of an alley...

The smaller the sides are in proportion to the rest of the die, the less easy one would expect that to be, so yes, D12 and D20 should "roll more."

For a single die, I agree. They like to sort of roll and tip and tilt and then land. But I think a fistful of d6s is better. There's just something so satisfying about the sound of all those dice shaking, and then rolling them and counting them up into that one massive number.

The board game Shogun/Sword of the Samurai came with a heap of D12s. We always wanted to design a system to make use of them.

Look into a game called "Tephra." The "Clockwork" system the writers developed for it uses d12s all but exclusively. It's a steampunk game. The mechanics are interesting, too.

D12s are also probably the easiest dice to spin. ;)

They can also emulate most smaller dice. You can use d12 for d2, d3, d4, d6 and, with some monkeying, d8 rolls.

Oh yeah, D12s are awesome... even if I like them for kinda meta reasons.

When you are rolling a D12 it can mean several things:

- You are Barbarian (D&D 3.5, PF)
- You're weapon is the fullblade (D&D 4e)
- You're a weapon master (Savage Worlds)

Either way, fun times are ahead. :smallwink:

I'm playing a PF barbarian but I chose a glaive, so sadly I'm missing out on the fun. Someone give me a d12 reach weapon!

You might be interested in getting in on this kickstarter (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/916188323/doublesix-dice-roll-better). (d6s and d4s made of dodecahedra by repeating the numbers. I think they look pretty cool.)

Better hurry - it's on its last day.

Greatbow also qualifies in D&D 4e. It's essentially shooting someone with an axe.

I don't find firing a bow exciting at all but hey, whatever floats your boat.

I don't also find bows exciting, but my friend is almost bound to them, so she became used to using a Greatbow as her weapon of choice.

d8's are my favorites. They have some nice and sharp edges, can be spun like a top :smalltongue:, don't have to worry about 0's or upside-down 9's, are a platonic solid, and have a lot of the satisfaction of d6's with a wider range of numbers. Mind you, d12's do have their benefits (mainly relating to using the number 12) but I much prefer the forgotten d8's.
