Say, a dwarf with spider climb cast on him is trying to reach a button, which is 60ft above him on the wall. He climbs up to it ok. Can he actually press it?

The text states

The subject can climb and travel on vertical surfaces or even traverse ceilings as well as a spider does.

The affected creature must have its hands free to climb in this manner.

If he lets go of the wall to press a button - does he fall?

Practical answer: The fluff has him climbing like Spiderman, sticking to the wall. As long as he has other points of contact, he should be able to free up a hand to push the button. Also, logic would dictate asking how he's climbing if he can't take his hand off the wall long enough to push the button.

Rules-Lawyering: His hands must be free to *climb*. If you stop moving first, you are no longer climbing and can use your hands for something else. Alternative: He continues the climb, using the button as a handhold. If he happens to push it in the process...

There are plenty of ways to press a button without using your hands. He can 'step on' the button as though it were on the floor and he walked over it, or he can head-butt it without letting go, or he can hold a short stick in his mouth and use that to press the button, etc. A small character could even ride on his back and press the button for him!

Don't you fall, then? )

It's reasonable to say that he needs both hands to climb but only 1 hand to hold his position. Therefore he has a hand free to press the button. Otherwise how does he make any progress at all on the wall if he can't lift either hand?

Three points make a plane.

So for a dwarf, that leaves you a free hand.
