I've been looking all over online, but I can't find an official listing for how much experience characters should have at each level. Not just how much to advance to the next level, but total cumulative experience.

It's on page 22 of the Player's Handbook and I found this (http://www.ign.com/wikis/dungeons-and-dragons/Level_and_XP_progression) chart online.

*edit* I suppose it's not official but it is accurate.

Haven't got the PHB on me at the moment. I'm visiting home for the holidays, is why I asked.

On top of that, are these experience totals the amount you need to gain to get to the next level, or the total amount your character should have once he's attained that level?

Those are the cumulative totals.

How the hell do people manage to cast things like Miracle or Wish without just stopping total level advancement?

There's Experience Is a River (http://community.wizards.com/forum/previous-editions-character-optimization/threads/1077406) for one thing, but I'm sure much better optimizers than I have just found ways around spending experience. You might want to ask Tippy.

Miracle has no XP cost for most of its uses, and wish can be gained for free by shapechanging into a zodar. Also, through various other methods, most notably wish farming (in other words, you never need more than just the one wish).

And in lower op, the answer to "how do you cast Wish?" is "Rarely". But the cost is still less than a third of a level's worth of experience, so it can be done occasionally.

Well, you could just use Pathfinder's solution: Replace XP costs with 5x the number in gold.

In 3.5 experience needed to reach the next level is equal to your current level * 1,000. This is a fairly easy calculation to make on the fly. Experience for each level = sum to level-1 * 1,000.

So experience for level 5 = 4+3+2+1 *1000 = 10*1,000 = 10,000 and 5,000 xp is needed to reach level 6.

Or am I the only one who calculates it each time I'm working out if I levelled up or not?

That's brilliant. That makes this a lot easier.

Stupid question: why not just do the math?

1000 for 2
3000 for 3
6000 for 4
10000 for 5
15000 for 6
21000 for 7
28000 for 8
36000 for 9
45000 for 10
55000 for 11
66000 for 12
78000 for 13
91000 for 14
105000 for 15
120000 for 16
136000 for 17
153000 for 18
171000 for 19
190000 for 20

There. Did it in my head in under 3 minutes.

At the level wish is available it's almost 4 encounters worth of experience to cast. If you don't mind delaying advancement by 3 encounters then go ahead and cast it. When everybody else levels 3 encounters before you you'll get 3 encounters where you get 42% more experience than the rest of the party and catch up.

That said, there are ways around paying the XP, some of them completely fail-safe.

Because those numbers are already present in the chart that was linked in the first comment.

I meant before the chart was linked. It's really simple addition. I just don't see why making a thread was necessary in the first place. If you've got a cell phone you've got a calculator so I just don't get it.

Because I didn't know what the addition pattern was, and couldn't find it online elsewhere.

You didn't know that getting to the next level requires 1000xp times the current level?

I'm not trying to give you a hard time here. I genuinely don't get how this is anything difficult.

This is correct. My groups typically don't bother keeping track of XP totals, since we're more of a low-op casual group. We just level up when milestones are reached.

Okay, I can definitely see how that would be a bit of an impediment.

I make frequent use of XP as a resource in my games so that just plain wouldn't work for me.

May your gaming be good and plentiful.
