It's Not That Simple: Let's Play Pokemon Black Randomised Nuzlocke

G'day, folks! After discovering how to randomise Pokemon ROMs, I was just itching to experiment with a 5th gen game. After excitedly chatting to a good friend of mine, I thought I'd try my hand at a forum-based Nuzlocke LP while I was at it. Many interesting things are bound to happen, and many will hopefully be entertained by my shenanigans!

Let's get on to the rules, shall we?

-If a Pokemon faints, it's considered dead and will be placed in a special 'Heaven' box
-If I run out of Pokemon in both my party and PC, it's Game Over
-My rival's starting Pokemon will also be randomised
-Trainers will have randomised Pokemon
-Static Pokemon and items (eg, Kyurem) will not be randomised
-Standard Nuzlocke catching rules apply and come into effect when I gain access to Poke Balls
-Shinies don't count and I am allowed to savestate for them
-Trade evolution Pokemon will evolve via leveling or stones
-Legendaries will not be among the randomised Pokemon
-No Shedinja under level 20

Some interesting choices. I don't think I'll go with Bulbasaur, though. It's already a starter, and I've used it in various versions of the franchise. Magneton is something I've never used, but I've never been fond of its evolutionary line. Walrein is also something I've never used, but I find the design interesting and have always wanted to try its line out in a game. The choice of starter is an easy one.

After everyone's fussed over the starters, we get to the battling. It hardly seems fair, though...

I decide to indulge my friends, but because of The Rules, I can only catch one. Maybe. So, what'll it be?

No, I do not have a moment to talk about our lord and savious Jesus Chr... Oh.

Well, Ghetsis does his little speech, and we fight N immediately after. His Raticate is easily dispatched with a few uses of Water Gun, so our journey isn't impeded for long. Immediately after leaving the city, though, I'm interrupted again and given a pair of running shoes. Thanks, mum, but couldn't you have given those out when we got the town maps?

After the reunion, I run into a Scizor right away... and realise I forgot to heal after the fight with N. Quick, grab those potions!

After some life-saving medical aid and a lucky freeze with Powder Snow, this metallic menace becomes the third member of our party.

How much do you want to bet that's not going to be a Lillipup?

Well, it wasn't. It was a Trapinch. Reminds me of Dunsparce the Hitmontop from my Soul Silver file.

Right before I get to Striaton City, Bianca comes and challenges me. She has Lumineon and Flareon. Looks like I forgot to set the option to make the rivals carry their starters, but this will make things interesting. It's almost like they're doing a Nuzlocke run as well!

The leader of this gym is at the trainer's school, apparently. I head there, only to find I've just missed him. I get a paralysis heal from a kid in there and battle Cheren. His Slugma and Grumpig fall easily and I go back to the gym.

Guess who's waiting for me? Who knew I could have just waited a few minutes instead of trekking all the way to the building almost next door?

I decide I want to catch another Pokemon before taking on a gym, but the grumpy old codger blocking the way to the next route won't let me through without a badge, so off to the Dreamyard to train!

WHAT.

Those two were both from the first trainer in the fist gym. The leader is taken down rather easily along with his Gothorita and Mankey, but Chicky scares me for a moment when he gets knocked down to 1HP.

Upon exiting the Gym, we're greeted by a woman named Fennel who claims to know Professor Juniper. Yes, Arkl, follow the strange lady who wants you to go upstairs. She has candy.

*ahem*

Fennel gives us the HM for Cut, which is promptly taught to Metallica, and sends us back to the Dreamyard to find some Dream Mist. Yaaaaay, fetch quest!

The battle theme for these guys is pretty badass, by the way.

The day is saved, Fennel gets her Dream Mist and I celebrate by running into the grass to catch a Poliwag. It dies to a Double Kick with a crit the first time I try to use it in a trainer battle.

I like to end my episodes on a happy note. Today, this will be done by Metallica learning False Swipe, an incredibly useful move in Nuzlockes that is employed in a different patch of grass to catch a Petilil.

I will admit, I've never quite understood why shinies matter in a ROM. It's not like you can transfer them or use them for anything outside the ROM, after all.

I had some legendarily bad luck with shinies in the days of 3rd gen, getting the trifecta of the uncatchable Poochyena, the Ralts caught by Wally and a Voltorb that exploded. Not on the same save file, mind you, but ever since then, I've had a need to catch each and every shiny I see, even if it's on a ROM and I don't end up using it.

DO NOT let your fire type die, not having something that can hit Ferroseeds super effective will make the steel cave a nightmare.

In the Dreamyard. Petilil was caught in the patch of grass where the Plasma grunts run past with the little girl's Pokemon. I'll try to be more specific in future posts.

I always repelled my way through the steel cave in my cartridge games. I get the feeling that most of my money in this one will be going toward Pokeballs and Potions, though...

After the shock of learning that Zoroark is not considered a legendary by the randomiser, I decide to throw my freshly picked head of Lettuce at those kids in the daycare.

I fight a trainer who gives me an Oran Berry, find a Repel (yay!) then head into the nearby cave with Cheren to save a little girl's Pokemon. He even checks if my Party's HP is okay before heading in. How considerate!

Uh-oh! The Plasma grunts in here have some nasty critters in their arsenal! I decide that Tusker is my safest bet against this foe and hope it doesn't know any fighting moves this early. I'm too lazy to look up the moveset for a one-time thing.

That Walrein, I tell ya!

These guys turn out to be a double battle, and Cheren backs me up with a Skitty. Unfortunately, a Hitmontop one-shots it and the Arnorith sent out to replace it. I worry for Metallica, but the AI thankfully goes dumb and uses Pursuit.

Since Cheren so kindly offers to return the girl's Pokemon, I'm free to grab the item (TM for Thief) and catch another party member.

The little girl's thank you present. I am greatly pleased by this, as I'd been thinking of picking some up. This saves me quite a bit of early-game money!

I fight some trainers on the way to the next city, and Chicky evolves. It's at this point in the game that we're introduced to Thick Grass, where wild Pokemon are stronger and sometimes come in pairs. Though the temptation is there, I decide the risk of death isn't worth an amusing screenshot.

One of the trainers on this route was generated with Roselia and Cacnea. I think this is the first themed opponent we've seen in the game!

What do we find upon arriving at Nacrene City? Why, a random guy who's set up shop in a warehouse selling drugs! That isn't dodgy at all!

Why would it be when Zoroark isn't a legendary at all? It's like Lucario was in Diamond and Pearl, tough to find but otherwise completely normal.

I wasn't that invested in 5th gen and thought something along the lines of "Hey, it's an event Pokemon. Must be legendary."

That and it had its own movie if I recall correctly.

This randomiser is certainly teaching me a bit and making things interesting.

Zoroark is not a legendary, but is an awesomely trollish pokemon if used well though.

Random Nuzlocke question: what happens if you need an HM to progress, but none of your current Pokemon can learn it? Is that the end of the Nuzlocke?
