Hi, can someone please clarify when one can make attacks of opportunity?

I would like to particularly to clear up one issue within this.

- You provoke an AoOp when you leave a threatened square
- A medium character threatens 9 squares including the one he is standing on
- If I move within the 8 threatened squares around this medium character does he still get AoOps (provided I am just using move actions?).

This mainly arose because one person I know believes it is a threatened area you can move around in without provoking anything, and another believes it counts per square.

You provoke when you leave a threatened square to enter another threatened square. However, a single move action can generally only provoke a single AoO from the creature threatening the squares.

It counts per square, but if all you do on your turn in a round is move, you don't provoke AoOs for leaving threatened squares (unless you're running).

When you leave the square you provoke the AoO.

Where's this stuff come from? It seems rather inaccurate.

Okay, just double-checked. It's not "do nothing but move," but rather "take the withdraw (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/combat/actionsInCombat.htm#withdraw) action." It's a full-round action that lets you move up to double your speed.

In effect, it's a double move.

It does, however, provoke AoOs for moving out of threatened squares other than the one in which you started.

Ah. Fair enough then.

1) You provoke an attack of opportunity when leaving a threatened square( but see 3).
2) Attacks of opportunity happen right before the thing that triggered them. (So if someone tries to leave a square you threaten, you can still hit them before they escape your reach)
3) 5ft steps and the Withdraw (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/combat/actionsInCombat.htm#withdraw) action do not provoke attacks of opportunity

The withdraw action can provoke attacks of opportunity if you move through threatened squares during your movement. it only prevents you from triggering an AoO when you leave your initial square.
