Restarted from this (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=320380) thread with permission so as to allow a maintained summary list in the first few posts.

Welcome, all, to the Summary of the Stick, a collaborative effort to provide a comprehensive resource for your OOTS searching needs! Contribution rules are as follows:

Credit: Everyone whose summary is listed in the compilation list will be added to the Contributors section with their contributions listed by their name.
Summary guidelines: We welcome clever and witty summaries, but above all, proposed entries should be clear: an ideal entry will summarize the content of the strip in one or at most two short sentences and, if possible, reference a memorable joke or occurrence.
Submitting a summary: Currently, summaries for new strips are on a first come, first serve basis; that is, the first one to provide a new summary for the new strip gets listed in the index, unless contested, in which case the following rules will be used:
Changing a summary: If you find a current or proposed summary entry unsatisfactory and wish to propose your own, you may do so. Once you have done so, others may also submit their own proposed revisions. After the proposed revision(s), a vote will be held.
Voting: A proposed replacement entry must have two positive votes to be added to the index. Any vote for the proposed entry is a positive vote; any vote against the entry is a negative vote, meaning that at least two more people must support an entry than must oppose it. If there are multiple proposed candidates, an alternate vote (http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&ved=0CDUQtwIwAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D3Y3 jE3B8HsE&ei=i-DaUumYGYPMsQSioIK4BA&usg=AFQjCNExoKgh8msptsbT57rBgK_eqkWsuw&sig2=4XY_MvCYKPSc8k_NAOfMOg&bvm=bv.59568121,d.cWc) will be held among the options, with the original entry being considered one of the candidates. Once a vote has been called, it will close in three days unless otherwise specified by the thread maintainer (me).

Heh. I had that with the last strip, too, though I don't think it'd been up quite as long.

you are doing it wrong
you should be using the same pattern they used on Friend's episode names...

The one where Elan becomes insivible
The one with the gender bending belt
The one with a game of go
The one with the acid shark
The one with the acid beetle pie
The one with the gate which no one ever got inside despite the fanbase thinking they would

DaggerPen

I tried to start them all with "in which," but that got vetoed pretty quick.

Maybe I'm opening a +2 can of worms here...but whats the point of this thread?

Not trying to say this thread is pointless. But would be good to know what the actual purpose is for this thread - is it for funny little observations about strips, coming up with different titles for comic strips, or to summarise key events in each strip?

Because currently it seems like an at-random mixture of the three.

For example (chosen at random while scrolling down the page) --
112 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0112.html) is labelled "Shatter!" which didn't really help me remember what that strip was at the time.
460 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0460.html) is labelled "If only the bars in Miko's jail cell weren't cracked" which doesn't really summarise what happens in the strip, but is more somebody commenting on alternative plots that could have come
605 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0605.html) is labelled "A wild Shojo appears!" which is a reference-filled joke about part of the strip
834 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0834.html) is labelled "Back in the Desert" which doesn't really let me know what the strip is other than one set in the main setting of that book
902 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0902.html) is labelled "How does Spider-Man fight sand?" which brings new elements in to make a joking comment about a strip

Correct me if I'm wrong, but having an index like this in the way its laid out seems to be a way for people to find a strip they had in mind quickly, or to quickly summarise strips in a way that the official titles (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots.html) don't.
Current I don't really understand the central theme and use of this thread other than to try and be the first to post after each comic is uploaded with an alternative title.

Speaking of which, how does that work with contributing? If I post straight after a new strip do I automatically get mine chosen? If not, how is it chosen? If so, do I get my name on the first post of the thread before the actual content just because I posted one strip title.

Not trying to be a douche or anything - I think a proper summary of the strip would be quite a cool project, but it needs a clear vision, direction and implementation process. If this is meant to be a community contrib thread like the Index of Giants Comments or the MITD thread, then I personally feel there needs to be a bit of discussion round the thread itself.

For example, I think it'd be quite cool to break strips into chunks of story (eg: the Bandit Camp plot, or something wider like the overall quest for starmetal) and have a brief blurb explaining the overall story that occurs in that chunk before listing the strips by number, with their official title and then a forum created bit that explains key points of that strip with a bit of humour where appropriate.

Eg (there's a slight lack of wit in this example :P):
The Hunt for Starmetal: #122 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0122) - #188 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0188.html)
The Order are sent to find a piece of starmetal by a disguised Sabine in order to buy the Linear Guild time to enact their latest nefarious plan.
In order to get to the starmetal, they must travel to the centre of Wooden Forest. Along the way they come across a bandit camp, a green hag (or possibly an annis) and an ancient black dragon.

122 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0122) "Adventurers Are Coming! Adventurers Are Coming!" - A small town prepares for the Order's arrival.
123 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0123) "Double Your Entendre, Double Your Fun" - The Order rests at an inn while Vaarsuvius inn-spects Haley's gemstones.
124 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0124) "Ding!" - Everybody but Belkar levels up. Belkar hunts Elan to level the playing field.

(etc)

I'm not saying we have to do it that way, I'm just using it as an example of what I feel the purpose of the thread should be.
I raise my vision for the thread not because I feel its better or worse than anybody else's, but because there doesn't seem to have been a discussion about what the overall vision and purpose of this thread is yet.

I think the lack of a clear goal reflects in the wild differences in the nature of the summaries as you read through the initial posts and limits the thread's potential.

Now here's a happy face to end with.

This is some pretty good criticism.

Right now, the main purpose of this thread is to help you when you're trying to find a specific moment, but can't for the life of you remember what strip it was in.

Breaking it up by plot arc is definitely a good idea - if we want to claim certain strip chunks and writing up the plot arc blurbs, I'm totally up for redoing the sectioning.

The current summaries are meant to be one-line/sentence reminders of the general content of the strip. The general idea is to use a memorable moment if possible and just summarize the broad strokes if not. They are to some extent meant to be read with the first five strips before and after them, but some of them are probably a little vague, as this is a compilation of a group effort from another strip, and there was not a proofreading process.

As for crediting - right now, it's first come, first serve, but if someone is dissatisfied with someone else's summary, then as thread maintainer I'd say that they can post their own and we can put it to a vote. And yes, you get your name in the credits if you submit at least one title. If the contributors section starts getting out of hand for even a spoiler, then I'll revise the system, but at the moment I'd like to try to recognize everyone's work.

Basically, while wit is fun, the summary is definitely meant to help find strips, and any changes towards improving that goal are fine by me. I welcome community input, and if there's any serious disagreement, I will abide by a vote.

I will say, I do definitely like the idea of breaking things down by story arc. The only question is - how should the strips be split?

Why can't it be all three? The overall purpose is to help people find a given strip (and if one can make it humorous, all the better). The best way to do that is to note the most memorable parts of it. The most memorable part of 112 is the shattering of Roy's sword. 460 is the only strip where the bars on Miko's cell are cracked, so any reference whatsoever to them being cracked tells the reader what strip it is. 605 is literally just Shojo's appearance to Belkar. 834 has a weak title, but that's because the strip doesn't really have anything happen except show our heroes back in the desert. 902 references a question which could only be relevant to one specific strip.

Now here's a happy face to end with.

This is solid and constructive feedback, thanks.

As DaggerPen already explained, the somewhat inconsistent style of the summaries is due to the way the contributions were originally gathered: There was a lot of work to be done, so anybody was welcome to contribute and their inputs were taken in the order that they arrived, or the order they called dibs on a section of the comic (check out the original thread if you want to witness the very lightweight, spontaneous process). The point you made was raised in a slightly different form: Somebody criticized my own summaries for being too cryptic and unhelpful as a summary. I thought the point was valid, so I edited my work to make it more straightforward.

Now, I agree with you and with DaggerPen. Now that the initial groundwork has been done, it is useful and fair to establish a more rigorous process so that this continues to be a collaborative work from the forum. The Giant's comments thread is an excellent example of such a thing, and that's what makes it helpful. We can and should emulate that spirit over here.

Why can't it be all three?
Yes it can. However, I think we need to agree on priorities. In my view, the practical aspect trumps the humor or the creativity. The primary goal is to make it easy to find a given strip, for as many users as possible. If the summary can be hilarious as well, that's a bonus, but this shouldn't be at the expense of usefulness. If we agree on that, then we will be able to find a consensus as to what the best wording ought to be.

Since DaggerPen is volunteering to modify the OP with proposed improvements, and even to referee any disagreement by way of a vote (thanks!), I propose that we begin to think of an editing process. Some initial thoughts:

1) We first establish a consensus on the summary's goals and priorities (I think we're close to that already) and that is written down in the OP. By the way, I think the OP should make it clear that the entire thread is a giant spoiler for the OOTS storyline, and is intended for use only by people who have already read the whole comic.

2) Anybody can propose a rewording of a summary.

3) If the proposal is seconded by a X number of posters, it is up for consideration as a replacement summary.

4) If nobody shows up in opposition, the rewording is accepted. We should allow for a decent minimum amount of time (a week?) before the change is made.

5) If there is a disagreement, a vote is in order.

6) I would recommend we skew the process in favor of conservatism, ie we should err in favor of keeping summaries as they are. This is in order to a) respect the initial contributors' work, b) avoid back and forth changes and c) contain DaggerPen's editing workload to as low a level as possible. So, I suggest a change would require a minimal number of opinions in favor, as well as a sort of supermajority (for example at least 5 Ayes, and a 60% majority).

Finally: I like the idea of sorting the strips by story chunks, as opposed to blocks of 100s. It makes a ton of sense.

Good idea - I think the spoiler bit is probably reasonably evident, but I'll add it just in case.

I'm good with the rest of these rules. If there's no major disagreements, I'll add these voting rules to the summary. (I think thread contributors are technically agreed to just decide on their own voting rules anyway, but while the thread's still small I may as well see if we can get a consensus.)

Finally: I like the idea of sorting the strips by story chunks, as opposed to blocks of 100s. It makes a ton of sense.

I think the first key here is to identify the different storylines. I know The Giant breaks the dead tree form compilations down into rounds, which may be a good place to start, but unless we have all the books between us and are willing to wait on the final one, that's not going to be the be-all, end-all.

In that vein, I suggest first tackling it book by book. Ipropose the following breakdown for the first book (sans summaries for now):

1-42: Gag a day era
43-71: Linear Guild meetup and fight
72-85: Durkon and Hilgya team-up, Church of Banjo
86-104: Tracking Xykon with the help of rebellious teenagers
105-115: The Xykon Fight
116-120: Escaping from the Castle of Dorukan

I agree that this project should keep a focus - this was somewhat addressed in the old thread, too, but TDG illustrated it much better than it was done there.

The idea of your proposals is good imo. But I think I would like to cut any needed initiated voting to a minimum. For this I would to it that way:

Every one can propose a rewording. A "voting process" is automatically started by this (without anyone needing to say anything).
Every forumite can just say which one they prefer.
After "end" of voting the winner will get in. If we want to favor the old one, than I would say the challenger needs to win the vote at least with X votes more than the champion. I would use X=2 for this [so that if someone proposes, someone agrees, nobody opposes the new vote is in. It should make maintaining easier, too - since if no one else had said something on it, DaggerPan can just do what she wants (vote yes to add it, vote no to stay with the old).]
Figuring out when to "end" the vote is probably the hardest part. I see three possibilities right now, which can be combined if needed:

After proposing a quote, there is a fixed time window. For example after 1 week after proposing the result is fixed.
After some amount of inactivity the vote is closed. For example if in three days nobody has voted, the vote is done.
If the challenger or champions have a certain number of votes more than the other. For example if a quote has 5 more supporters than the other, the vote is finished early.

I'm not sure which numbers/method is best suited. For easy of usage I would probably just use "one week after suggesting a new quote, the vote for it is closed".

In the end it should do basically the same thing you want, but when we establish this, there is no need for anyone to say "A vote is in order, lets start it now". We would just have a passive mechanic that clearly outlines which summary gets added [we could certainly make special exceptions if needed, too].

For chunking the strips in other batches than x01-Y00:
I like the idea. I would personally just use the Rounds used for the books (they collect around 10-50 strips each). I would do this, because there is no need to argue about them - only disadvantage is we need to improvise for the current book, since without the book we don't know how the Rounds are finalized. [I can also post that if we agree on it]

Edit: To the crediting system: I personally would just list all contributors (I would do alphabetically. Another easy system would be just appending each new contributor ad the end of that list), without saying who did which summary. It makes maintaining easier, and it would be possible to credit someone who did somehow managed to get all his summaries replaced [or you have credits going from one strip number to multiple persons, which is imo strange]

I understand the intent, and I agree it makes it lighter. However I think it makes it way too easy to enact changes. You just need 1 person to propose, 1 to approve and no reaction by others for a week, then it's done. If folks start proposing a lot of things while not reacting strongly to others' proposals then it will quickly become overwhelming. I suggest tweaking your mechanic so it becomes a little more difficult to change. Also, I figure people will not always just vote Aye or Nay:

1) Every one can propose a rewording. A voting period is automatically started by this.
2) The vote lasts 1 week starting from the moment the initial proposal was made.
3) During the voting period, every forumite can make other proposals to reword, or just say which one they prefer.
4) At the end of the voting period, if one proposal has gathered a minimum of 5 votes AND 60% of all votes, it is adopted. Otherwise the wording remains unchanged.
5) People can change their votes during the process (this allows for a consensus to form around a new idea).
6) DaggerPen is in charge of declaring the voting period closed, counting the votes, and updating the summary. She can extend the voting period as she sees fit (this may be needed if fresh proposals appear close to the end of the voting period, for example).

EDIT about grouping of strips: I have all books, so I could, if that's your preference, just copy the Giant's organization into rounds over here (I don't think Jones & Rodriguez would go after me for that). But I think this isn't the best solution. For one thing, the rounds' titles are pretty much like the strips' titles: Not always very explicit. I'd rather recommend we come up with our own chapters.

Good point about possible multiple suggestions coming up. If we do get multiple rival suggestions, I think I'll take a page out of Grey_Wolf's book and go for the alternate vote system (http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&ved=0CDUQtwIwAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D3Y3 jE3B8HsE&ei=i-DaUumYGYPMsQSioIK4BA&usg=AFQjCNExoKgh8msptsbT57rBgK_eqkWsuw&sig2=4XY_MvCYKPSc8k_NAOfMOg&bvm=bv.59568121,d.cWc), since that isn't too complicated and allows for instant runoffs.

I would be very interested in the rounds breakdown! We can come up with our own names for description, but it's just a good grouping strategy. We can just wing it re: the newest book and adjust once it's actually released.

I personally don't see a problem that a change is easy done, especially when nobody opposes it (It might be that 1 week is to short [which I don't think so] - but in that case I would rather change the duration, maybe 10 days or even 2 weeks?).
And even with the numbers I suggested, even 2 "yes" and 0 "no" can be turned down by DaggerPen - since she should have a normal vote like everyone else (but I think she isn't required to post it in the thread if she doesn't want to, just to reduce the clutter).
And if this really turns out to be problematic, we can change it later to require more. I personally don't want to cement the list as it is, because I think if we can improve it, we should allow it to get improved.

I like the addendum of additional proposals during the first.

But I wouldn't allow additional proposals and requiring 5 votes and 60% votes. It would favoring the current summary way too much - especially if there are multiple proposals (and I'm not sure if 5 minimum votes is way to high).
For example, currently the Summary is 'A'. Someone proposes 'B'. Another one dislikes the wording a bit and wants 'b'. Yet another forumite likes 'C'. After the vote is finished and tallied up 1 vote are for 'A', 10 for 'B', 3 for 'b', and 5 for 'C'. Personally I think clearly that vote shows we should replace 'A' with 'B', yet it has only achieved around 52% (also I needed a calculator to check what the exact result is! (I was confident it is <60%, but not sure enough to not check it)). Yes I now that is an extreme case, but if there are more proposals than it is pretty easy to not get a majority.

Needing only more votes than another proposal makes it much easier to avoid such situation (and if we want to favor old summaries, than it is easy to say "a new summary needs X more votes than the old"). And we only need to count the vote - no need to calculate some numbers. (Ok, normally it should be rather easy to judge whether it is greater or less than 60% - but since we need to count it either way, way just don't use the count directly?)

Yeah - no need to argue further. We have different views how this should be approached. And without further peoples chiming in, we wouldn't get this resolved anyway. [Another worry I have that there aren't that many folks interesting in voting, and with such high numbers no change is possible]

Here is the Round organization from the Books. I purged the original titles, just to err on the side of caution. Also, while they are quite funny, they are similar to the strip titles content-wise (so if we want this to be informative new titles might be better suited anyway).

(1-121) Dungeon Crawlin' Fools
(Bonus) Round 1
(1-32/34-43) Round 2
*33 comes technically after the end of the book - I would personally add it to Round 2
(44-72) Round 3
(73-85) Round 4
(86-120) Round 5
*121 comes technically after the end of the book - I would personally add it to Round 5

(122-301) No Cure for the Paladin Blues
(122-149) Round 1
(150-174) Round 2
(175-189) Round 3
(190-197) Round 4
(198-223) Round 5

*259 comes technically after the end of the book - I would personally add it to Round 7
(260-288) Round 8
(289-298) Round 9
(299-301) Epilogue

(302-484) War and XPs
(302-320) Round 1

(582-599) Round 5
(600-622) Round 6
(623-642) Round 7
(643-662) Round 8
(663-672) Round 9

(673+) Book 5
(673-698) Round 1?
(699-709) Round 2?
(710-774) Round 3?
(775-822) Round 4?
(823-833) Round 5?
(834-899) Round 6?
(900-936) Round 7?
(937+) Round 8?

Book 5 are purely guesses by me - I have no clue (and some of them are rather large chunks), but I have no idea where to separate them. Also I think we shouldn't use the Book 5 title here before it gets publicly announced.

The intermezzos are rather odd: They don't appear in the normal strip order, but are at the end of the book in an "extra" section (with some bonus material)

Yeah - no need to argue further. We have different views how this should be approached. And without further peoples chiming in, we wouldn't get this resolved anyway. [Another worry I have that there aren't that many folks interesting in voting, and with such high numbers no change is possible]

Hmm, that's a very valid point. I was basing my thinking on what I see happening on the Giant's comments thread, where there are quite a few opinionated people (I mean this in a good way, but if we have the same numbers over here, we will soon face a glut of changes unless the rules make it difficult). However, if we have few voters then the bar should be set lower. Maybe we could try using your voting rules at first. If we don't see too many more commentators here then we could stay that way. If we see more people come and voice an opinion, then we can always revise the rules.

I think that I will again take a page out of Grey_Wolf's book and go with the "two positive votes" rule, meaning that each vote for replacement counts as one positive vote, and each vote to keep it counts as one negative vote. So if someone proposes a new summary, I agree and the original summary writer does not comment, it will be replaced; if someone proposes one, I agree, and the original summary writer disagrees, it requires at least one more person to support it to be changed; if someone proposes one, I have no opinion and the original summary writer agrees, it will be changed; if someone proposes one, I have no opinion, the original writer doesn't chime in and someone else supports it, it gets changed; et cetera, et cetera. If we start getting a larger audience, I'll bump up the number of positive votes required. Multiple suggestions will be held according to the aforementioned alternate vote system. The default voting period is a week unless otherwise specified for whatever reason.

That sound good to everyone?

Seems fine to me.

On another note: I would move the "Spoiler warning" to the first post [Or just cut it - it should be pretty clear that a "Summary" might spoiler some of the content it summarizes]. And since it should be damn obvious (so obvious that it doesn't hurt to add just a little mockery to it) I would write it like this:
"Only that nobody can say I haven't warned you, hereby you are warned: This thread will contain spoilers!"

Cool. Now, as a way to test if this works, let me make one change proposal.

I'm not keen on this one:
571: He gets better. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0571.html)

It's very hard to grasp who this might be referring to, as it refers to something Roy will say many strips later. Context in the preceding or following few entries doesn't help much since it doesn't directly mention the Oracle's death.

So, I suggest this:
571: The Oracle gets better : Roy finally finds a living being to talk to. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0571.html)

Much better than the original one (only thing that bugs me is the space before the colon, I would remove it), but I would propose a even more precise one:
571: The Oracle gets revived and reveals he can hear Roy. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0571.html)

(so from an alternate voting standpoint I would vote mine first, then Gwynfrid's one)

And here are proposed summaries for the books/rounds

(1-121) Dungeon Crawlin' Fools: The Order of the Stick manages to destroy Xykon (thinking for good) and to blow up the Dungeon of Dorukan afterwards.
*Round 1 introduces the Order and is only bonus material, so probably we shouldn't add it, the question if we start with Round 2 (or if we discard the Round-numbers completely)
(1-32/34-43) Round 2: The Order advances through the first few levels of the Dungeon of Dorukan.
*33 comes technically after the end of the book - I would personally add it to Round 2
(44-72) Round 3: The Order meets the Linear Guild, a bunch of evil opposites around Elan's twin Nale and defeats them.
(73-85) Round 4: Durkon and Hilgya get lost together and get closer. After hearing Higya's past Durkon dismisses her and returns to the Order.
(86-120) Round 5: The Order finally can locate Xykon and luckily defeat him in the showdown, while Roy's sword gets shattered. They think Xykon is destroyed for good and Elan blows up the castle by activating the self destruction.
*121 comes technically after the end of the book - I would personally add it to Round 5

(122-301) No Cure for the Paladin Blues: The Order get imprisoned through Miko, get dragged to Azure City and learn that Xykon is still alive and that the world is in danger because of the Gates.
(122-149) Round 1: They arrive in a small town to cash in some of their rewards and level up. The Linear Guild tricks Roy to do a sidequest to retrieve some starmetal to reforge his sword. Team Evil emerges again and start recruiting some Hobgoblins.
(150-174) Round 2: While looking for the starmetal, Elan gets captured by bandits. Roy initially doesn't want to help the others to rescue Elan, but after some time he follows them and they manage to defeat the bandits.
(175-189) Round 3: They finally locate the starmetal. Before retrieving it Vaarsuvius temporally gets turned into a lizard and desintegrates the Young Adult Black Dragon living in the cave.
(190-197) Round 4: Team Evil arrives at their old base. We learn about the five Gates. Opening any one is the key to conquer the world, but Dorukan's and Lirian's Gate are destroyed and Xykon needs to decipher the other locations from Serini's diary.
(198-223) Round 5: Miko Miyazaki finally finds the Order and has the order to arrest them and bring them to Azure City in the Southern lands for a trial. The Order resist first, but agree that they want to find more and travel along with Miko.
(224-251) Round 6: They stay at an inn alongside the road, where through some mixup assassins try to kill Roy. Roy escape this by donning the Belt of Gender-Changing, but in the aftermath the inn explodes, including the treasure they have collected thus far. Haley takes this pretty bad and can only speak gibberish that nobody can understand. They finally resist Miko, but she manages to overpower them and drags them in chains going forward.
(252-258) Round 7: The Linear Guild makes a plan to revenge their defeat and recruit some new replacement members. They luckily find Julia Greenhilt, Roy's sister, and kidnap her.
*259 comes technically after the end of the book - I would personally add it to Round 7
(260-288) Round 8: The Order finally arrives in Azure City. During the trial they learn about the Gates and the Order of the Scribble. The Order is found not guilty but Belkar manages to kill a Guard and gets nearly killed himself by Miko, who prays that she is the one who can kill the Order of the Stick, in her eyes agents of evil.
(289-298) Round 9: Lord Shojo reveals to the Order that he has tricked all by faking to be crazy, that he works with Roy's father Eugene and that he wants the Order to investigate the status of the other Gates, since two are destroyed already. Eugene reveals that Xykon is in fact not destroyed. The Order agrees to work with Shojo and Belkar is punished with the Mark of Justice, a curse that gets activated when he kills a living being inside a city or town or is to far away from Roy.
(299-301) Epilogue: Team Evil plans to conquer Soon's Gate next, which is located in Azure City.

(302-484) War and XPs: Team Evil invades Azure City, but Soon's Gate is destroyed. Roy dies and the Order gets separated in two groups.
(302-320) Round 1: During the New Year celebrations Roy gets closer to Celia. Haley learns that her gibberish is probably caused by too many secrets she keeps for herself, but can't confess her love for Elan.
(321-338) Round 2: They go to the Oracle to learn where Xykon strikes next. Roy manages to dismiss Azure City as a possible answer and the Oracle says the next Gate Xykon shows up is Girard's Gate. Before they go back to Azure City Nale contacts them that Julia is his hostage in Cliffport.
(339-367) Round 3: Shojo's wizard teleports the Order to Cliffport, where they manage to rescue Julio. Nale plans succeed, he planed to switch position with Elan, who gets thrown into prison alongside Thog.
(368-376) Round 4: Miko is on the way back to Azure City and learns that Xykon is going in the same direction.
(377-400) Round 5: Just in last minute before Nale can kill Haley, Elan arrives with help of Julio Scoundrél. They manage to defeat the Linear Guild once again while Haley finally is able to confess her love for Elan and can talk normally again.
(401-411) Round 6: Miko and Hinjo learn that Shojo is only faking to be crazy. Miko snaps and kills Shojo, falling for it. Hinjo reveals that Soon's Gate is the gem inside the throne room in Azure City.
(412-466) Round 7: The Battle of Azure City: Roy dies and Soon's Gate is destroyed through Miko, who gets killed afterwards.
(467-484) Round 8: Durkon, Elan and Vaarsuvius retreat with the remaining Azure City survivors, while Belkar and Haley stay in Azure City with Roy's corpse.

(551-581) Round 4: Kabuto tries to let Hinjo assassinated. Haley and Belkar visit the Oracle, who is killed by Belkar, triggering the Mark of Justice. They travel further to Greysky, where Haley was a former member of the Thieves' Guild and Celia loses Roy's corpse, which gets animated to a Bone Golem.

The Soul-spliced Vaarsuvius deploys Familicide to kill a massive amount of Black Dragons related to the Adult Black Dragon.

(937+)? Round 8?: The Order travels in direction Dwarven lands.

I hope I managed to get not to many typos in there, so feel free to point out any errors (or other improvement). It is certainly possible that there is a better round-division of book 5, but I couldn't really find nice spots to split the rounds.

Much better than the original one (only thing that bugs me is the space before the colon, I would remove it)
Ah, sorry about that. Typographic standards in my native language mandate a space before the colon, but there isn't one in English and this always trips me up.

As for your round-level summaries, they are very accurate, but they don't need to be this long. The individual strip summaries will come just below these, and provide all the necessary detail.

I propose the following:
- Just keep the book titles, we don't need a summary at this level.
- Discard the round numbers, they aren't useful and can get odd with the inclusion of bonus material.
- Keep the order as in the online comic, even when the books alter it.
- Shorter summaries below:

Book1 (1-121) Dungeon Crawlin' Fools

(1-43) Exploring the Dungeon of Dorukan.
(44-72) Meeting the Linear Guild.
(73-85) Durkon's short-lived romance and Banjo's short-lived godhood.
(86-121) Xykon found, Durokan's Gate blown up.

Book 2 (122-301) No Cure for the Paladin Blues

(122-149) Sidequest for starmetal.
(150-174) Battling bandits.
(175-189) Lizard V defeats Young Adult Black Dragon.
(190-197) Team Evil recovers.
(198-223) Order arrested by Miko, finds time to help some dirt farmers.
(224-251) Inn blown up along with treasure, Haley speechless.
(252-258) Linear Guild kidnaps Julia.
(259-288) Order on trial in Azure City.
(289-298) Roy accepts Shojo's "job offer".
(299-301) Team Evil on their way to Azure City.

Book 3 (302-484) War and XPs

(302-320) New Year's Day romances have varied success.
(321-338) The Oracle of Sunken Valley.
(339-367) Nale's Cliffport trap.
(368-376) Miko meets Team Evil.
(377-400) Elan meets Julio Scoundrél, saves the day, gets the girl.
(401-411) Miko's Fall.
(412-466) The Battle of Azure City.
(467-484) The Order is split.

Book 4 (485-672) Don't Split the Party

(501-540) Haley, Resistance Leader.
(541-550) Endurant O'Chul makes MitD a friend.
(551-581) Kabuto plots, the Oracle dies.
(582-599) V ends Kabuto, and leaves.
(600-622) Truce with the Thieve's Guild.
(623-642) Adult Black Dragon revenge ends with the rise of a dark V.
(643-662) V fails to beat Xykon, MitD saves two lives.
(663-672) Roy is back in the game.

Book 5 (673+) ?

(673-698) To Girard's Gate.
(699-709) Gobbotopia is founded.
(710-774) Elan meets his father.
(775-822) Linear Guild attacks.
(823-833) Resistance crushed, Team Evil on the move.
(834-898) Windy Canyon.
(899-936) Tarquin's breakdown.
(937+) To Dwarven lands.

ChristianSt
2014-01-20, 08:51 AM
I'm ok with keeping it shorter (albeit I have the opinion that 1-2 sentence wouldn't hurt. I'm not sure exactly how DaggerPen will use them. If she wants to use it as Spoiler-labels, then yes they really should be shorter. If they are used as a intro for each junk, than a bit more information doesn't hurt.), but I would change some things:

You forgot Book 4, Round 1:
(485-500) Roy's afterlife.

(122-149) Sidequest for starmetal.
(175-189) Lizard V defeats Young Adult Black Dragon.

For me this indicate rather wrong information. In (122-149) they visit the town and accept the starmetal quest.
In (175-189) they finish the starmetal quest. Making the only event there the defeat of he YABD kinda says that this is the only relevant thing that happened - which is only the case if we consider Familicide. [And if we consider such future knowledge we need to rehash old summeries from time to see if more relevant things happened there.] I think if we want such sort summaries, I would use these:

(122-149) Visiting a town.
(175-189) Finished the starmetal sidequest.

(224-251) Inn blown up along with treasure, Haley speechless.

Haley isn't speechless, she speaks gibberish. I would change it to:
(224-251) Inn blown up, Haley speeks gibberish onwards.
I think we can drop the treasure when we keep it that short. And also denote when she gets fixed:
(377-400) Elan saves Haley with help of Julio Scoundrél, Haley is fixed.

(551-581) Kabuto plots, the Oracle dies.

I think the more import part is that the Mark of Justice triggers, but I'm not sure which opinion is better :smallwink:

(643-662) V fails to beat Xykon, MitD saves two lives.

I think we should say "MitD saves O-Chul and Vaarsavius" [And I think we should write out Vaarsavius, but that is my personal opinion, such shorthands like V are rather informal in my opinion. I'm more fine with MitD since we don't have a name to use anyway.]

(663-672) Roy is back in the game.

I would be a bit more formal/precise here and go just with
(663-672) Roy gets resurrected.

(198-223) Order arrested by Miko, finds time to help some dirt farmers.
(259-288) Order on trial in Azure City.

I would use "The Order": it makes it much clearer that this isn't a capitalized version of "order" at the start of the sentence.

(401-411) Miko's Fall.

Maybe I'm a sucker for listing more information, but in (401-411) I would add Shojo's death and write:
(401-411) Miko kills Shojo and falls.

(412-466) The Battle of Azure City.
(834-898) Windy Canyon.

I think we should also include deaths of protagonists and would write:
(412-466) Roy dies during the Battle of Azure City.
(834-898) Durkon gets turned into a vampire inside Girard's pyramid.
[I think the pyramid is the more important location than Windy Canyon]

(937+) To Dwarven lands.

I'm not sure how we should handle the ongoing chunk. I don't think we should speculate here about what will happen ("To Dwarven lands." sounds that they will arrive there - but we don't know if that really will happen). So I would use "Traveling on the Mechane". [Or in the case we haven't a true statement I would leave it blank.]

You forgot Book 4, Round 1:
(485-500) Roy's afterlife.
Oops. Right you are.

On everything else, I think there is a strong case for brevity at the expense of precision. Remember, our audience is made entirely of people who read the whole comic already, quite possibly more than once. They just need an easy reminder to help find the strips they're looking for. As an example: Nobody needs an explanation of why Miko falls; if they do, they should be reading the comic, not the summary!

I think we should say "MitD saves O-Chul and Vaarsavius" [And I think we should write out Vaarsavius, but that is my personal opinion, such shorthands like V are rather informal in my opinion. I'm more fine with MitD since we don't have a name to use anyway.]

I don't quite see why we should be formal at all? From my perspective, anything that makes it easier & nicer to read is good, which makes me lean in favor of shorter and, where possible, more humorous, as opposed to more formal.

I'm not sure how we should handle the ongoing chunk. I don't think we should speculate here about what will happen ("To Dwarven lands." sounds that they will arrive there - but we don't know if that really will happen). I don't mind, because this is a placeholder anyway. It will change when we have more strips, and the chunks will move around when we see how the Giant split the book into rounds.

Voting is now closed; I have edited the first post to use the shorter round summaries as proposed by Gwynfrid, except for the missing 485-500, which is "Roy's Afterlife" as per ChristianSt. I also used thereaper's 941 summary, and Gwynfrid's 942 summary. The alternate 571 summary has also been used.

I am currently considering amending for a shorter voting period, because it seems like we got these issues settled in a much shorter time than the voting period really required. I'm thinking I may make it 3 days by default, with the option to extend it if discussion is still ongoing near the end of the period.

Right now, the existence of the Snarl is in doubt. There's something in the rifts that kills people coming nearby. Whether that's the Snarl (as described in Crayons of Time) is a question mark for me.

That said, I welcome other opinions.

Porthos
2014-02-15, 04:42 PM
A bit more seriously, then:

Laurin telepathically probes Girard's Rift and something horrible lashes out in response. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0945.html)

It can always be edited later to The Snarl.

thereaper
2014-02-16, 05:21 AM
No, it should be referred to as the Snarl, because to call it anything else at this point would be highly speculative. We might as well say "someone that looks like Laurin peers into the rift". Even if the nature of the Snarl turned out to be something other than what we were told, that wouldn't change the fact that this is almost certainly the thing that kills people from the rifts that has up to now been referred to as the Snarl. Therefore, it's silly to refer to it as anything but the Snarl.

Gwynfrid
2014-02-16, 11:30 AM
All right, on second thought:
- This isn't worth pages of debate.
- The goal of the summary is to make is as easy as possible to find the strip you're looking for. From that perspective, the word "Snarl" is the most suitable expression: It's short and everybody will recognize what it is. Its accuracy, story-wise, is moot as far as our purposes are concerned.

Therefore, I withdraw my initial suggestion, and recommend we use DaggerPen's (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=17004173&postcount=60) instead.

EDIT: All right, first posts updated. Being as this is the first strip and it's not entirely clear where the arc is going, I've just put it under a generic Book 6 category for now; when we reach the end of a plot arc I'll make a new section for said arc. I am currently trying to figure out some good tags for the first post. I will probably also remove the specific strip summary credit breakdown in favor of a general "contributors" list, because keeping track of who suggested what has gotten to be a bit of a pain.

I checked the summaries for books 1 and 2, and I'd like to propose a few minor fixes:

"32. Story content is removed due for trademark reasons." - Proposing "due to trademark reasons."

We need a CR between #100 and #101.

"103: The MitD unsuccessfully to come up with a terrifying threat." - Proposing "The MitD tries, unsuccessfully, to come up"

We need a CR between #150 and #151.

#182 and #186: I suggest replacing the acronym "YBD" with the full "young black dragon".

"220: Vaarsuvius' invoice is louder than her regular voice." - Proposing "his or her voice" because the summary should not take sides in that perennial debate :smalltongue:

Also, I'm suggesting a full rewording for 2 strips:

"160. Samantha demonstrates why Rogues are lower tier than Sorcerors." - Spelling "Sorcerers" is a minimum change. But anyway, I dislike the mention of "tiers", so here is an alternate: "160. A jealous Haley challenges Samantha. Bad idea."

"242: Chekhov's Shadow." - I think this is way too obscure, and fails to summarize the strip. Here is my proposal: "If you never got an inn blown up, you aren't a real adventurer."

Debatable. In fact I don't think Durkon is portrayed as being passive in combat (passive in non-combat contexts, now, that's possible). The strip shows him to be utterly clueless about teamwork at the start of his adventuring career, but he's learned a lot since.

Yeah, I'm inclined to agree. I'm going to put my favorite as:

963: Durkon remembers learning when to help, and the High Priest of Hel doesn’t make the connection. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0963.html)

With one modification:

963: Durkon Allotrope Thundershield remembers learning when to help, and the High Priest of Hel doesn’t make the connection. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0963.html)

That's the Allotrope, the "learning when to help" and the "lack of HPOH realization" all in one go. It's not the pithiest thing, but hey, that's what the official titles are for, and there's a reason those don't make this thread redundant.

Any objections?

If you want to get technical, neither does 73. "What Would Thor Do?" is not as helpful as Durkon would like (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0073.html), 114: YOU! BROKE! MY! SWORD! The purpose of the thread is to serve as a sort of directory to various strips. The reason the above examples work is because they make references which can really only refer to specific strips (and therefore work as well as or even better than a simple summary). The one I suggested follows the same lines.

That said, however, if Gwynfrid's is preferred over my suggested alternative (as your implied opposition would indicate), I am perfectly happy with mine being discarded.

My general rule with these summaries is that they should cover the most memorable things about the strip, in such a way as to make searching for a strip easier. To that end, I have no objections to summaries that reference a memorable aspect of a strip, such as the punchline. In this instance, however, I am not sure the "steam punk is trendy" bit is memorable enough, and prefer the first proposal.

Some time back, I proposed a few changes for summaries that were exceedingly cryptic references (those suggestions were accepted). I didn't propose changes to thereaper's examples, because while they don't do the best possible job in my opinion, they aren't so bad that they warranted the additional work at that time.

That said, when it comes to new strips, I don't think we should use referencing as a substitute for a real summary, except for truly unforgettable references. And even then, what qualifies as "unforgettable" will vary from reader to reader, so a summary will nearly always be preferable.

I think it is both a reference to Belkar's stated reason for turning down the date (he doesn't like gnomish cuisine) and that despite being Evil there are certain things he can't bring himself to do*. I think it might read better just as "but has standards".

In another nitpick, I must say I'm not keen on the "standards" remark. I don't recognize the TVtropes reference (I know what TVtropes is but I'm not a fan). And if we take the word at face value, I don't think Belkar has any standards to speak of. At least, it remains to be proven. He suddenly didn't feel like exploiting the kindly gnome woman any further than he already had. That's the most we can say, and he could very well do this or worse to somebody else the next day.

I feel like him turning down the date with the gnome woman, and then stumbling out a line to his cat about "bad enough I was-" indicates some type of reservations there. I originally had a note about him maybe being less evil than before, but I thought that would be too controversial, and this was a more ambiguous phrasing about it.

I don't wanna start a whole Belkar's character development debate, but I feel like that sequence is going to be one of this comic's most memorable parts, and I'd like to have some reference to it. Does anyone have an alternate suggestion?

More seriously, it seems like the type of thing that people will want to reference later - "Doesn't Haley have a habit of carrying around weird metal arrows just in case?" "Yeah, she had adamantium arrows in this strip."

The summary isn't the right medium for this kind of research. A summary can only give a overview of the plot, some highly memorable events, and a very high-level view of character appearances. Usage of such or such arrow doesn't qualify as memorable, imho. If we were to support somebody looking for adamantium, then every summary would have to list unusual weapons, unusual spells, unusual actions, character feelings, you name it. In other words: Familicide is big enough to be mentioned by name in a summary. Adamantine arrows, not so much. (There is a tiny chance that they turn out to be super-important, but we won't know that until later).

If one wishes to find where adamantine arrows were used, a search through WombatOfDoom's transcription (a phenomenal piece of work, I may add) is the correct tool.

Depending on what happens, we may need to revise that one if it turns out Haley didn't use Diplomacy but the DC 19 Cha check needed to take temporary control of a berserking golem.

My summary isn't meant to be an exact technical description, nor do I think any summary ever needs to be so, for the purpose we have here. It looks like diplomacy to the non-expert eye, so it's more than good enough to call it that. Maybe the Giant will go back and detail that nuance later... but that's unlikely, imo.

"Durkon" (in quotes) matches the summary of 961, the only other specific mention of that character we have. I'm not particularly attached to it, just explaining why I used that.

As worded, the summary of 961 only makes sense because it says "Durkon". But the term, High Priest of Hel, is used in all other instances (3 of them so far). Now, I realize I'm being super-nitpicky here. This is really not a big deal.

Wow. Somehow I missed all three of those. Yeah, it should be High Priest of Hel. I was just trying to be consistent with the summaries that were there. Frankly, if I had never looked, I'm pretty sure I would have gone with High Priest of Hel or maybe HPOH.

Just as a comment on this discussion, while it is pretty insignificant whether the summaries use particularly consistent terminology, it does help when searching to see how frequently a particular thing or character is mentioned in them. Which I have done in the past.

DaggerPen

Inasmuch as we have a 'policy', I tend to prefer "HPOH/High Priest of Hel" as the relevant name for summaries unless "Durkon" is particularly appropriate, as in 961.

Also, I prefer Unbeliever's proposal as well.

I beg to differ. This needs to be recorded somewhere (such as the Index, for example), but not in the summary. The summary is a compressed version of the storyline, while the cameo explanation is commentary.

986: Cameo-flage: Kickstarter & Tribute cameos on a secret mission.

I'm afraid this way of doing it doesn't work well, for summary purposes. It's just too cryptic: Nobody will get it, except a tiny minority of forum dwellers. The summary should be focused on clarity and simplicity, imho, not on cramming in every bit of related information.

We don't. The purpose of the summary is to facilitate finding a particular strip, and we do that by summarizing the events in the plot. I'm not sure what sketch you're referring to, by the way. Is that the one with Rich drawing somebody's character?

Thing is that sometimes people want to find strips that have distinctive non-plot features without knowing exactly where they were in the story - both of the preceding things being examples of that*.
I think it would make sense to mention those in the summary where possible.

They certainly need to be either here or at the Transcription (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?338747-The-Transcription-of-the-Stick&highlight=transcription), but I'm not entirely sure which is more appropriate

Gwynfrid
2015-05-27, 12:44 PM
It would be appropriate in the transcription, I guess. Also, since it's a one-time event, I suppose we could allow it in the summary, as a footnote. But that should really remain an exception.

On the other hand, if we start adding "distinctive non-plot features", a very vague definition that would catch a very wide variety of things, then very quickly we would end up with a huge, bloated wall of text, and thus we'd defeat the purpose of the Summary. Not to mention the question, what's a "distinctive feature"? Trying to decide if something is distinctive enough would spark endless debates.

SaintRidley

I think so.

The other sorts of distinctive not-plot features I could think of would be particularly unusual panel layouts - the strip of Roy falling, the one of the two armies having parallel conversations before the battle of Azure City, the one in the pyramid where the panel layout follows the swirl of the ensorceled eye, etc.

unbeliever536

Those are indeed distinctive, but they're also easily referenced in the summaries. The summary for 887, for example, clearly mentions the layout.

I agree. And even when not described as directly as that, the summaries as they exist make it easy to find those distinctive moments, because those special layouts were designed to serve the plot's dramatization: Therefore, the layout is strongly associated with the plot in the mind of the readers.

"Back on the Mechane, Mr. Scruffy shows Little Whiskers who's boss."

While most or all readers should be aware that Mr. Scruffy is the name of a housecat, it's less-well-known that Little Whiskers is the name of a tiger, which I think is important for that sentiment to be communicated clearly. The intention was probably the symmetry of using both given names, but I think it would be better to use both species' common names. I suggest "Back on the Mechane, the housecat shows the tiger who's boss."

By the way, this index has been extremely useful to me.
