Hey guys, this is pretty quick question. I saw a feat mentioned a little bit ago that makes your Int score effectively higher at first level for learning languages. It also added a couple other piddly bonuses I think. Anyone know the feat I'm looking for?

Nope. Open Minded however gives you 5 skill points you can use to pick up "Speak Languages".

Can't say it's much more effective, but you gain extra skill points which is always a plus.

Kingdoms of Kalamar, Player's Guide, has the Polyglot feat which doubles the number of languages you learn for every rank of Speak Languages. Then there was Master Linguist, from Races of Eberron, which gave you one language every level you had it, then specifically goes on to say that it is as if you'd gained a rank of Speak Languages, so the Kalamar feat should double it.

And you're right, there is one that doubles the free languages you get from Int, but I can't think of where I saw it just now. One of these three even made Speak Language a class skill for anybody.

Hope that helps.

The feat is probably Gift of Tongues, from Races of Faerun. It's an elf-exclusive regional feat, and it makes your Int score count as 4 higher for the purpose of determining your bonus languages, in addition to some other stuff.

Multilingual, from Lost Empires of Faerun, is similar, in that it gives you three additional languages known at first level. Plus some other things that are similar to what Gift of Tongues gives you.

Not just elf-exclusive, but moon elves and sun elves only. It also gives Speak Language as a class skill.

There's also Multilingual, from Lost Empires of Faerūn, which gives you three bonus languages and Speak Language, plus a meager bonus on a quasi-unrelated skill.

Pre-swordsaged.

Side idea: take a level in bard or factotum (or anyone else with SL as a class skill) and grab Open Minded. Boom, 5 languages.

Gift of Tongues was indeed what I was looking for! Though my character is not an elf, so I am glad for the alternate feat suggestions being given.

Edit: Dang! There are a lot of feats named Polyglot. One of them is from Dragon #323, gives an extra language, and makes speak language always a class skill.

There's also the PF feat Cosmopolitan (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/general-feats/cosmopolitan).

There is Master Linguist (http://dndtools.eu/feats/races-of-eberron--10/master-linguist--1886/) in Races of Eberron

Also, there is Smatterings (http://dndtools.eu/feats/races-of-destiny--81/smatterings--3678/) feat in Races of Destiny. (Dunno is it good enough)

Smatterings is indeed pretty damn cool, but honestly Multilingual + Master Linguist means that I'm gonna know every language in the game around level 3.

Which setting?
Because only FR have 100 (http://forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Languages) (hundred) different languages.
Also, there are secret Druidic language, Truespeech, Khen-Zai (language of Ethergaunts), and language of Blood Elementals (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/article.asp?x=dnd/sb/sb20030208a) (which unable to be learned by anyone else)

Homebrew setting, so just the basic ones. The character is a Truenamer so he kinda does the whole Truespeech thing. Secret languages are tough though.

With preemptive apologies for the "me too" reply....

In the Kingmaker campaign, another player and I both saw the diplomatic benefits of being able to speak multiple languages. Without any collusion or discussion we both built this into our character progression.

I went with a gnome who took the Gift of Tongues alternate racial trait (+1 language for each rank of linguistics) and regularly cast Share Language, Communal.

He built an Oracle with the Tongues curse so that at 10th level he has a permanent Tongues effect.

It doesn't sound like either of those help the OP, but it's amusing for us to be in a situation where you need to speak to Centaurs or perhaps know ancient Cyclopian and the party says "yep, we can do that."

It's also nice to have an obscure language that's known by everyone in the party, to coordinate without the NPCs knowing what you're saying.

Amen to this. It's also fun when certain PCs share a language and others don't...leads to all sorts of entertaining situations.

I definitely like this idea. Using Polyglot, Master Linguist, and Multilingual on a Truenamer gets me 80 languages by level 15. Could definitely do some cool stuff with that.

Antropomorphic animals can always speak their animal language. My most recent DM has ruled that I can't learn those with speak language, even if I am playing a shifter. But I keep fighting the good fight!
