I am starting a new campaign where I am part of an evil cult/religious group attemtpting to gain control in a city. I have decided that I don't want to play a pure spellcaster class (Have a 20 sorc, gets boring being that powerful :smallfrown: ). But want a a melee character with some spells thrown in mainly for self-buffing and increasing my melee potential.

So my question is, should I make an evil cleric (If I did the domains I would pick would probable be from Mysticism(Evil), War, and Strength), an anti-paladin, or paladin of tyrrany. I have never actually seen either of the paladin classes played before, and only seen an evil cleric played to a low level, so I'm not sure how well they work, but from reading up on them they sound pretty cool. Also I will proably be grouping with a rogue who plans to go assasian fairly quickly so keep that in mind.

If anyone here has some expeience playing these three types of characters you're input would be greatly appreciated.

The Evil cleric does work pretty well, providing you prepare enough healing spells, or take the spontanious healer feat from comp. divine. have never played the others though.

^ I thought Evil Clerics Couldn't get heal spells...

But they get Harm... =) And spiritual Weapon.

Plus Cleric are good in melee too as their Armour doesn't impede on their spellcasting.

They gain heal spells, they just can't cast them spontaniously, unless you take the spontanious healer feat.

I thought you had to be good to take the spontaneous healer feat?

Nope, I checked, it does require you to be nonevil though. You can still prepare your healing spells though.

Ah well.. Can't have it all. But clerics would be quite good in your case anyway.

Try a duskblade from PHBII or Abjurant Champion from Complete Mage. I have a human battle sorceror/binder/warlock/abjurant champion working towards hellfire warlock in a spelljammer campaign right now. He's a melee specialist using Eldritch Glaive. That campaign uses fractional attack bonus and saves, though.

The Hexblade from Complete... Warrior? Is also a nice melee-caster hybrid class. More Arcane that what you seem to be going for, but fun for an Evil character.

Hexblade is similar to Paladin of Tyranny in flavor and strength.

There is also Warlock and Binder.

Are you familiar with the Prestige Paladin? It can be easily adapted to Prestige Paladin of Tyranny. Just substitute protection from good instead of protection from evil.
