Please post all OOC questions and traffic for "Heading them off at the pass" here.

General Setting Information:

Starting Location: In and around the city of Denver, Colorado.
Start Date: Tuesday, December 31, 2013. New Years Eve
Disclaimer: I am not a resident of Denver, or even Colorado (though I have visited.. nice place!) This is not an attempt to recreate a true-to-live version of the city. I reserve the right to be dead-ass wrong about where things are, how they are, how much they cost, etc. This is the World of Darkness as conceived in my head. Any references to real people, places, or events could be accidental, or could be a willful lack of give-a-darn on my part. That said, some effort will be made to keep continuity.

Protocol: If you type it in the open thread, expect that every player will read it, and that every character who could reasonably know it WILL know it. I will attempt to place character specific information in a spoiler when possible, or in a PM if it's important enough to hide. If a spoiler has a name on it (Including "ST Eyes Only"), please respect it. That being said, I am not the spoiler police. So if you (the player) want to ensure that something is secret, send it to me in a PM.

YOU might know the WoD inside out. Your character does NOT. They are "normal" people with "normal" sensibilities, proclivities and ideals. Character development, and honest reaction to situations is one of the best things about WoD. Hence, the following...

Please do not metagame. We hates that.

Excellent roleplaying will be rewarded.

Please select a unique color for your IC speech (FCFS), and make sure we can tell what you're character is saying.

Use the OOC thread (or at least a spoiler) if you're going to ask ooc questions.

Please let me know if you plan to be away for an extended period. If the action bogs down due to an individual's inactivity (it happens, RL comes first), I will either act for your character as closely as I can to your typical style and modus operandi (if necessary), or might find a way to send your character home, to the store, or otherwise offscreen (if possible). That said, I will always try to give you ample time to respond.

Don't forget the only real "house rule" implemented so far. Hunters can soak Lethal damage at Sta-2. This means if you have a Sta of 1 or 2 dots, you may not soak lethal at all.

Feel free to make suggestions, recommendations or otherwise tell me how to make the game more enjoyable. This is YOUR game too!

Wade "Hooks" Hoffman- aka Erasmas
Wade's twenty-first birthday ended a little differently than most people's. His brother (Clayton) and his sister (Mandy) took him to a bar and all three had a little too much to drink. Mandy was flirting with two frat boys who didn't take her emphatic "no" at the end of the night too well. Instead, they decided to attempt to rape her in the parking lot, in the back of Wade's truck. Luckily, Wade had decided to get something from his truck before they got too far. Unfortunately, even with Mandy's testimony, the boys' parents were very influential and wealthy while Wade and Mandy's parents were already deceased. Two charges of third degree murder; fifteen years upstate.

While behind bars, Wade furthered his understanding of mechanical things and even picked up boxing. When he finally got out, he couldn't find work and had been locked away for a decade and a half. And so, he moved in with his brother Clayton in Denver; he owned a auto mechanic's shop and gave Wade a job. In time, Wade became close buddies with a friend of Clayton's named Logan "The Werewolf" Ryback, the President of Los Muertos Vivientes, the local biker gang. And since Clayton was already a member, Wade fit right in and quickly climbed the ranks.

Merits :
Concentration (1) - You're rather good at shutting out distractions and focusing on the task at hand.
Good Right Hook (1) - The power of your punch belies your modest frame. Add two dice to your damage roll for any brawl-based attack.
Specialist Driver's License [Motorcycle] (1) - Your driving repertoire extends far beyond the SUV or sports car. You're qualified to drive motorcycles.
Unflappable (3) - You are a naturally placid person and take most things in stride. You gain two extra dice on any Willpower roll that involves staying calm and not overreacting to mundane experiences. (note: this is in relation to everyday real life occurrences and not supernatural ones.)

Flaws :
Clannish Family (-1) - Your family is as loving ans supportive as anyone else's. They don't take kindly to strangers, however. Your relatives either disapprove of your friends or they like to keep favors within the family. Your kin don't do anything that directly or indirectly helps anyone apart from their own.
Criminal Record (-3) - Those taking this flaw will automatically have at least two misdemeanor and one felony arrest on their record. In addition, you will receive exceptionally poor treatment from law enforcement officials who know of your record.
Distinguishing Characteristic (-1) - You have a physical feature that makes you very easy to pick out in crowds, such as elaborate tattoos, a scar or an obvious birthmark.
No Phone (-1) - You do not have a regular phone number through which you can be contacted. You are very hard to get in touch with on short notice and are difficult to track down. It's hard for you to keep in touch with fellow hunters, and you must rely on face-to-face meetings for planning and to arrange meetings.
Vice [Cigarettes] (-1) - You're addicted to some sort of controlled substance. The one point version represents an addiction that is legal and easy to satisfy, such as cigarettes.

Alex Wallace- aka Vonpenguin

"Alex Wallace was a normal, optimistic, tomboyish girl growing up. As long as she could remember she would help anyone that asked nicely and idolized her Father, a firefighter, saving lives seemed like the noblest thing a person could do. She wanted to become a doctor, but lost her scholarship after partying a little too hard in college. She managed to transfer to a less intensive program, eventually qualifying as an EMT-Basic certification.

Alex started out eager and hopeful, and though she saw some ugly things on the job, maintained a healthy outlook for the most part and qualifying for her EMT-I/85 classification as soon as she was able. Her outlook took a sharp turn a year ago however, she was off duty and walking home from the store when she saw two unconscious men in an alley, her training taking over she called it in and triaged the men, trying to stabilize the worst off of the two. The other man died in transit and a friend of hers in the local police told her later that the man she saved had mugged the other, the dead man tried to fight him off and they had both passed out by the time she found them. Something broke inside her that day, she still tries to help but there's always that nagging thought in her mind "Is this what it looks like? Are they worth saving?" "

Madge Kiddo

Madge Kiddo aka Avian Malkavian

Name: Madge Kiddo
Player: AvianMalkavian
Chronicle: Heading them off at the Pass
Nature: Trickster
Demeanor: Survivor
Concept: Disillusioned Teenage Cabbie
Creed: Defense

Margaret 'Madge' Kiddo learned early on that life was generally unfair and unforgiving. Even before her family disowned her after she came out, her home life wasn't exactly Cleaver-esque. Her father was a drunk and her mother was a shell of a human being, meekly accepting every liquor-fueled punch her husband threw at her. She grew up in what could best be described as a ****ty neighborhood, and dropped out of High School in her senior year. What was the point, after all?

When she left home, she moved with a few friends to the 'big city' of Denver. Sharing an apartment between six people was affordable, but not easy. When it become evident that tensions were rising, she moved out and managed to find a closet for rent that somehow managed to be referred to as an apartment. While being Burger Czar of O'Tolley's was a real thrill, the **** pay didn't pay her **** rent. Multiple thefts of the family car to get drunk with friends in her youth had given her automobile experience beyond her years, and she managed to land a job as a cabbie.

The work wasn't exactly perfect, but it was definitely a step up past flipping meat-like patties at O'Tolley's. Plus, she occasionally participated in conversation with her fares, which was a nice distraction and a nice way to keep up with what was going on. She stayed in touch with her friends and even made some new ones at the taxi service. It was surprising how much you could learn about what really goes on in a city just by talking to other cabbies. A lot of the time, people didn't even pay attention to them, saying things they would never say around anyone else.

Living on your own in a big city, especially in its cheaper neighborhoods, is a dangerous proposition, but Madge learned that the best way to survive was to trust her instincts. She developed a pretty good knack for listening to her gut, as a result. Even with all of her difficulties, Madge's life is finally beginning to find some level of equilibrium. She's, for the most part, financially stable, if stable means being able to pay the rent and eat a steady diet of ramen, anyway.

Nicholas "Stone" Stoneham

Nicholas Stoneham was once an eager, bright eyed new agent. He had gone to Quantico, passed his tests and found himself stationed all over the country. This success lead to a success in his personal life - He met a woman, fell in love and got married. His whole family attended! First came the house, then came the baby. Life seemed good. He wanted to help people and that is exactly what he did.

But the good times couldn't last. Nick's work took its toll, took over his life with late nights and long business trips. Still, he and his wife were willing to give it a go. The baby and all that. Unfortunately, the turning point in his life came during a late night. The family had gone out to a restaurant for a dinner during one of his brief stints home. The official report referred to it as a mob hit, but whatever had happened it left Nick permanently scarred and his son lost in a hailstorm of bullets. At least... that's what it appeared to everyone else. His memory is fuzzy and the therapist tells him regularly that it is due to PTSD, but Nick will claim until the day he dies that he saw some of the mobsters... biting people.

After that, the marriage collapsed and with it went the house. He withdrew from his family though they do call him on his birthday and the holidays. He threw himself into his work and his stoic demeanor earned him the nickname "Stone". Feeling guilty for the loss of his son and the emotional toll it caused, he also dove into the world of charitable actions. It's not unusual to see him walking the streets, keeping an eye as neighborhood watch or at the soup kitchen ladling out meals. Anything to gain forgiveness.

Is it too late to make some changes to the sheet? I didn't get a chance to respond earlier. I was just thinking of some of your suggestions you made before, Pife.

Also, I think I did my edges wrong. It's been so long since I played Hunter I'm having to relearn all of this!

Yes, that's fine. That's basically what I use the Imbuing for, especially before we really start using your abilities. So, for everyone interested, you certainly can still make changes to your character right now. I'll let you know when that "window" closes. Just let me know what you're changing please.

By the way, feel free to suggest and/or make rolls as you feel it appropriate. If, for some reason, I choose not to allow the roll, (such as if the situation in your post that you wanted to roll for changes before the roll would have been made, etc).

I will also ask for rolls when appropriate. Unless otherwise specified in the posts or rules, all Difficulties are 6.

Hey guys,

I'm just writing this real quick to apologize for the fact that I can't make any posts until after roughly 6pm during the week. I promise to try and not hold up the game too much but I don't have a smart phone to respond on while I'm work.

Thanks!

I was just thinking... it might be a nice idea to have a map of the Denver area up in the initial post here, for reference? And maybe we can have the key locations and our locations slapped on it, so that we have a bit of orientation?

vonpenguin
2014-01-17, 07:30 PM
I like that idea in a general sense, but honestly I hate having to map out where my character is street by street. I think by neighborhood is good enough personally. Just to throw my vote in.

Erasmas
2014-01-17, 07:36 PM
Oh, I don't really want it for street names and what not. I just want to be able to see if a destination is on the other side of the city or if it's very near to where I currently am... things like that. I'd like to know where the major freeways, sports stadiums (if any), hospitals, etc. are at. More like a tourist-style map than anything else is really what I am hoping for.

vonpenguin
2014-01-17, 07:41 PM
Ah ok. Sorry, I'm a little paranoid since I had a scion GM make us map our route through Tokyo for him.

pife
2014-01-17, 10:33 PM
Point taken. I've been using maps for my own edification, looking up neighborhoods, (and even addresses in some cases) so that I could keep my frame of reference clear.. I know from previous games that you excel at that type of thing, so I believe I will have to chat with you some more about some of your techniques that I have yet to master.

I'll try to get this figured out this weekend (no promises, as Erasmas knows, I'm the ANTI-techno-whiz), but this feature will be coming to a thread near you as soon as I can figure it out.

By the way, to make a single roll for yourself, you just need to use rollv..

Specifically, to make the roll that Andy made earlier, you would enter

and it turns out like this

Hope that helps

Quick question.. I want to make sure I give you guys the best options for your starting edges for the Imbuing (as we're.. ahem.. there now lol). I don't have all of the Creed books, so there are a couple of level 1 Edges I'd like to get some details on. If anyone could send me this info, I'd appreciate it.

Level 1 Edges I don't have the info on:
Alarm (Defender)
Vigilance (Judge)
Project (Martyr)
Focus (Visionary)

Also, I was reviewing everyone's "desired" edges. I think that in some cases there is confusion about how those are purchased. Each Hunter receives 3 points to spend on Edges. The progression within each path is as follows..
Level 1 Power= 1 point
Level 2 Power (of the same path) = 2 points. To start the game with a power of the 2nd level, you would have had to put all 3 points into the same Creed. For instance, on the Vengeance Path of the Zeal Virtue, the level 1 power is Cleave, and the level 2 power is Trail. In order to have both, you would have to have placed all three of your Virtue points into Zeal, as the level 1 costs one point and the level 2 costs 2 points.

Nobody put all three points into the same Virtue, so the highest level Edge. anyone will be able to have for the Imbuing is a level 1 Edge. You will be able to have 1, 2 or 3 level 1 Edges, depending on the situation. Since nobody will be able to afford a level 2 edge until later on, your options will be to either "save" the extra point and be halfway to a level 2 edge, or to select another level 1 Edge within a Virtue you have points in.

Let me know if this changes your desired edges, or even if you would like to rearrange your Virtue points.

vonpenguin

I'll PM you those edges in a few minutes.

Rolling my Stamina (spending a WP): [roll0]

2 successes!

EDIT: So, Pife, how much damage am I taking?

pife
2014-01-21, 12:01 PM
Hey there Avian, my fault for not being clearer in your spoiler. Since the crash was effectively a plot device to start the scene, I was narrating the crash damage, setting it at two points (after a theoretical soak) so that there was no chance of you rolling a bad soak and getting knocked out or killed.

So, normally you would, of course, get to soak damage, but in this particular case, I wanted to narrate two points to reflect "ouch, that crash hurts and my face is burned from the airbag. Now why was my car fighting back when I tried to turn/brake?" Since you had spent Willpower on your drive check, I specifically wanted to minimize your risk of personal damage.

So, in this case, you will still take the two points of bashing, but will always get a soak roll in the future. Sorry for the confusion. This also means that you keep the Willpower you were going to spend on the soak roll.

It might be an issue of coding.

vonpenguin

Will we also be doing the "slowest person declares first fastest person declares last, then invert for rolling" thing?

pife
2014-01-27, 09:57 PM
Yes, sort of. We'll see if it slows things down too much, and if it does, we'll modify it to streamline. I'm also wanting to avoid rolling initiative each round (which is RAW), unless you all want to go that route, as I think that will slow things too much.

I think we'll need to be flexible until we see what works smoothest. (open to suggestions). For now, indicate your initial desired action when you roll initiative (or edit it into the post for Gunn and Von since you already rolled).
Once I have all 5 initiative's rolled, I will declare the opponent's initiative, and intent. Those who beat that initiative can then determine what they intend to do (even if it is different than their initial plan) and roll. Those who are slower will have to wait until the opponent acts before they do.

[roll0]

As far as the listening.. I'm actually going to make two rolls for you. Listening at the door will be Per+Alertness, not Awareness.

But I AM going to give you a Per+Awareness roll as well, to see if you notice anything unnatural. (Note to all players: Sometimes I will make both of these rolls secretly for you, as you will not "know" whether you succeeded or failed.)

Listening
[roll1]

Noticing
[roll2]

As for everyone else:
The initiative is going to be:
Madge- (17)moves up to intercept the Van Driver and belt her with her fist. (or something) (For Everyone-Please make an attack roll and damage roll, we'll do both at the same time to save time. If you miss, we'll just ignore the damage). Madge, your rage has possibly taken the upper hand... There is a tingling in your fingers, and you can... almost.. feel the solid weight of a baseball bat or crowbar in it. (If you choose to, you will manifest the Cleave Edge, and an empowered weapon will appear from nowhere in your hand. IF you select to manifest this Edge, you will roll Dex+Melee as normal, Diff 6, and damage will be Str +2 LETHAL damage) IF you use your fists, roll Dex+Melee, Damage = Str. By the way, let me know if you are REALLY invested in this attack, like, willing enough to pour your heart and soul into this attack.

Hooks- (13) Hesitates for a moment, sees the cab driver bolt at the Van Driver, and lurches into motion, attacking with his blade. As you felt moments ago, your blade feels warm in your hand, and is nearly vibrating. (You, also, may manifest the Cleave Edge if you choose. Either way, you will roll Dex+Melee, Diff 6. IF you manifest Cleave, damage will be Str+3 (but bear in mind, your blade won't be able to withstand the power emerging through it for long, and will eventually be destroyed unless you are able to make a Zeal roll, Diff 6 each round after the 1st)

OR, Hooks, you can manifest the Forsee Edge. Your shaken mind will zoom out of focus for the briefest instant, showing you two (or more) different possible "futures". This will allow you to make two rolls (with your normal blade). I will then take both rolls and determine a narrative that explains what you 'see' in your minds eye. You can then select the 'path' you want to choose. (obviously, you will almost always choose the most 'successful', but the choice is yours) You will roll Int+Vision, Diff 7. The number of successes will determine how many alternatives you get.

Stone-(13) After a moment of self-doubt considering the changing situation, Stone will move to intercept as well, but not to attack. As far as I have been informed, he does NOT have a weapon out. (Feel free to amend this action within reason. You seem to be torn between trying to stop her, and to understand just what she is. You can, if you choose, decide to manifest the Discern Edge.

IF you choose Discern, roll Perception+Zeal, Diff 6. This Edge will allow you to 'notice' things that you were previously unable to notice.

The Van Driver (10) will abort her action , which was to move directly to the rear-left door of the cab, (assuming she makes a Willpower roll) to block Madge's attack, but will not be able to defend against Hooks

Alex- (9)- Plans to appeal to the Van Driver, likely using Cha+Empathy. You are confused, you want to help, and the situation is getting out of control quickly. You can, if you choose, manifest the Discern Edge. (See Stone's entry for the mechanics). However, you also see that at least two of these strangers are moving to assault the Van Driver. If you choose, you can instead manifest the Bluster Edge. Unfortunately, you would be choosing to use it against either Madge or Hooks, to PREVENT their attacks against the woman (women?).

IF you choose to manifest Bluster, be prepared to deal with a likely very pissed off Madge or Hooks, but you will roll Wits+Mercy, Diff 6. You will ALSO have to make a Willpower roll in order to abort your action Diff 6 OR spend a Willpower point to guarantee that you get to change your action.

So, looks like everyone has some decisions and/or rolls to make.

Peter, your action was to make non-combat rolls, and I will be posting the IC results as soon as I close this post.

Go!

vonpenguin

Alex will still attempt to talk her down, though might throw in a non-mechanical shaming of Madge and Hooks when it's my turn to right a proper pose. Will also Manifest Discern.

Alrighty, need a couple of rolls (from Hooks and Peter) to complete their actions, and feel free to react and/or plan your next actions. I intentionally left the individual actions out of spoilers, only separating the scenes. I am trusting that you will use only what your character would know or notice in your descriptions, but I'm attempting to open up the narrative to give you guys more freedom to react to the entire situation.

As far as initiative, keep your relative positions in mind. As long as your action doesn't impede or ruin another player's action that is moving faster than you, I'll allow it, although Alex does go after the Van Driver, at least for the time being.

As far as other level 1 Edges you have not already manifested (and that are in Virtues appropriate to your characters), feel free to shoot me a quick PM or OOC to suggest manifesting one. You are all fully committed now, something terrible and strange is happening, but you have all chosen to act in one way or another. Your (character's) lives will never be the same again.

Okay, forgive me because I am unsure as to what exactly I should roll (I am still very unfamiliar with this system), but I'm gonna go out on a limb here.

Strength+Melee [roll0]
Strength+Melee [roll1]

Erasmas

Apologies for the double post. I have been informed that it should be DEX+Melee instead.

First "Path" [roll0]
Second "Path" [roll1]

And my damage is my STR+2? So, base should be a 6.

vonpenguin
2014-02-04, 12:57 PM
I believe, though someone correct me if I'm wrong, you also have to roll for damage, Strength+weapon+successes.

Sheesh... sorry guys!
:smalleek:

I think I understand now.
Path 1: [roll0]
Path 2: [roll1]

And I just screwed that up as well... the second should be 7d10, not 8d10! Wow. Regardless, I will take the first path as my final answer, Regis.

Yes, your base damage with your blade is 6 dice, plus one for each success after the first success on your attack roll. So, on path 1 of your "forsee" roll, you will roll 8 dice for damage, and on path 2, you will roll 7. (You had 3 successes on the first, 2 on the second).

It's possible that your "better" hit (which will be narrated to a more deadly or convenient location) will end up with less damage than your "lesser" hit. You will be able to choose the path that "actually" happens, based on your desired outcome.

In combat, foresee is fairly straight-forward. In non-combat situations, it could give you completely different results.

An example;

You are standing outside a ranch style home with a wrap around deck, two doors (front and back), a garage, and numerous windows. I (the ST) know that there is a bad guy waiting with a gun just inside the front door, and I know that there is a Rottweiler in the garage, but you don't know either of those facts). You use Foresee, rolling (for instance) 3 successes. You can only use one reroll per action, but your action is to attempt to sneak into the house. You decide to use one of your foresee actions for this. I tell you to roll Dex + Security, twice. You do so, receiving one success on the first roll, and three successes on the second.

Lets say that I narrate (and I'm paraphrasing, have a meeting to get to) that..

"You creep onto the deck, heading for the living room window. The deck creaks ominously as your feet find a rotted board. You freeze, hoping that you weren't heard, but eventually slip up to the window, and attempt to slide it open. The warped wood rasps as the window jerks a few inches at a time, but eventually, it is wide enough for you to slip inside. You now stand in the living room, where a muted television shows the antics of SpongeBob and Squidward having a circle jerk (or something)." This could have been your "one" success roll

Your second roll receives this..
"You tiptoe to the front door, pulling your trusty lockpicks out of your pockets. The porch light is out, but these picks are like extensions of your hand, and you can (and have) used them blindfolded. You silently slip your picks into the lock, twist, lift, and the deadbolt slides open with a nearly silent 'snick'. Grinning to yourself, you replace the picks in your pocket, and turn the knob, opening the door confidently. "BOOM, says the .357, held in the arthritic hands of Janine, the Bingo Lady"...

So, with the first roll, you only got one success.. Your entry was troubled (as far as you knew), making noise and having difficulty. Your second roll went MUCH better, you were far more proficient. BUT, you walked into a trap. Which would you choose?

So, again, in combat, you will likely "normally" only take the attack that does more damage. In non-combat, it can get more versatile.

Hope that helped. By the way, I mentioned that your Forsee roll netted you three decisions. You can only use one extra roll/vision, etc, for any single action. You could then use another from the living room to decide to sneak to the bedroom, search the house, whatever. Or, you could use one to dodge Janine's gunshot. Then you would still have one more 'vision' to use sometime during the same scene.

pife
2014-02-04, 01:41 PM
Normally, you would wait for me to narrate the "effect" of each path, it would be like visualizing yourself doing it in two different ways, and selecting the option you prefer.

Even if they end up doing the same "add effect here", one of them might be stylistically more to your liking, or put you in a better position for future actions.

That being said, when I get a chance, I will post both "path's" that Foresee revealed to you, and you will have the opportunity to select from those.

Tirzah [roll0]
Jacket: [roll1]
Zipties: [roll2]

Proposed Actions.
Tirzah: bolting to her right (your left) through a doorway
Jacket: drawing a weapon and bringing it to bear on you
Zipties: You can't see him through the partially open door.

Propose your action. You can use the actions of anyone slower than yourself to help determine what you want to do.

Okay, at this point I think Stone would place himself between of the cabbie and the biker, but keep his gaze locked on the possessed woman. He's going to shout "Freeze!" to everyone in the vicinity. Before he wasn't trying to flex his authority on anyone but the ghost, but things are getting out of hand.

Edit: Also, his goal is NOT to get stabbed, but to make a nice firm wall between everyone.

EditEdit: Don't worry about the delay in response, things were crazy here last night so I didn't have a chance to respond last night anyway.

vonpenguinOh, sorry, missed that. Yes, you can try to become a human shield. And since you are slower than he is, Hooks will be able to see that you are intending to intercede. You will end up getting there too late to prevent his attack this round, if it occurs, but your point will definitely have been made.

Under normal circumstances, yes. But since I'm still trying to feel out exactly how the combat should run here in a pbp setting, I'll allow a reasonable non-offensive alteration to your plan assuming you make a Willpower roll (diff 6). I'm willing to be a little flexible till we all get used to how it runs.

Four DICE of lethal. It isn't variable like a knife attack, which depends on your strength. That bullet does a potential 4 dice of damage (plus 1 for every success on your attack roll past the first, but you only had the one success in this case). You still need to roll the damage, and then they either do or do not get to soak lethal (depending on what they are).

It was brought to my attention that people might not know "when" they go in the initiative order. Completely my fault, I'll do better with keeping that in the forefront.

Madge is first at 17
Hooks and Stone are at 13, Stone having the slight edge due to Dex
Silky goes at 10 (he held his action till the Van Driver attacked him, and will go when she did)
Alex is at 9

Jinchi, Jacket and Tirzah all go on 11, (Jinchi, tie goes to you, you go first),
Zipties goes on 10.

Shall I wait for Hooks to attempt his grab? In case I need to change Alex's action to "try and pull free"?

Either way. You can preemptively make your attack and be prepared if hooks grabs you. I am not sure if he will try to hold you or if he's. Just trying to get you to reconsider. Or you can, if you choose, make a episode check to dodge. I am fine with you rolling both to save time and just use the action that ends up happening.

What do I need to roll in order to attempt to hold her back (just momentarily)?

vonpenguin
2014-02-19, 12:19 AM
Looking at the rulebook it sounds like a hold to me, though pife will obviously have the final call. Holds are strength+brawl, then on my turn we would each roll Strength + brawl to see if you maintain the hold or not.

You'll probably get this. I'm going to say Alex is so intent on getting to the van driver that she's only really focused on her and the thing that floored her. So no attempts at dodging until you grab on.

Erasmas
2014-02-19, 01:11 AM

pife
2014-02-20, 12:21 AM
Sorry guys, will have a new post up early tomorrow.

And Stone, I believe you were considering either Ward (Sta+Zeal Diff 6), number of successes must be exceeded in a Sta roll for a monster to approach. Distance they are held = to 1 yard per point of Zeal you have. Please note, that this does not freeze them, it just keeps them away from YOU.

Your other logical option was Cleave, which I'm fine with as well. Dex+Brawl, and I will also allow you to manifest a weapon if you like. Either that or you can use your handgun to pistol whip him. An existing weapon deals an additional +2 damage, a spontaneously manifested weapon does Str +2 lethal. (So your gun would do bashing if you hit him with it).

Let me know if any there are any other Edges that you qualify for and would prefer.

Hooks, looks like you're going to be able to grab Alex, and it will be up to you how you handle that. Time got away from me tonight, been working late all week.

Looks like you're good and caught, Alex.

Peter, roll for damage with your pistol, 5 Dice.

Also for Peter!! I screwed up on the armor. You might not have been hit last round. The Kevlar Vest adds 3 soak dice. Also, I set a house rule that if you can soak lethal at Sta-2. So, roll me 3 soak dice for last round, (plus any soak dice if you have a 3 or higher in Sta,) and again for this round.

Sorry, I can't post at work.

I did decide... as much as I want to stay true to the defender creed I think in this instance his reaction would warrant manifesting cleave. Since he doesn't have any weapon out I think he would create a weapon.

Do I roll dex+brawl now to manifest or when I attack? Either way:

[roll0]

pife
2014-02-21, 02:41 PM
Dex + Melee, actually. So, lets just disregard the last die (since you would only roll 3 dice for Dex+Melee).

Hmm, since you don't have any points in Melee, would you rather have your fist manifest the Cleave Edge? That's acceptable too.

Need you to roll damage, you go before him, and he isn't trying to block. Either way, you will roll Str +2 lethal. (and if you choose your fists, that's not a bad gig, lol, normally you would just do Str bashing). If you choose your fists, you will get to roll an extra die for damage, so 5d10 potential for damage for this strike. Good luck!

As soon as I have your damage, I can move forward with the IC.

Hmm... I don't really want to get punched in the chest again. That hurts! But...

*tries to think what Stone would do* I think now that the initial rage has been expended he'd draw his gun and order the creature to stand down. His mad as hell, but he's also got a bloody woman/crazy ghost/paramedic/cab driver/biker that are in this mess too. An all out brawl might not end well for any of them.

But he still has cleave active :D. I don't know if anyone else can picture it like I do, but I imagine it as a glowing armor that covers his right arm down to his hand. Dunno if that's possible, just how I'm going to imagine it!

And if I'm not mistaken, didn't the other critters join the party too?

pife
2014-02-28, 03:26 PM
Okay, so Hooks is manifesting Cleave, Stone is drawing his pistol and trying to get the creature to stand down, and Alex is trying to impose her will on it. Already have Alex's rolls, but need Hooks to roll damage (remember, at +2 of normal damage, so STR+3 right now). Also, Stone, anything in particular you want to say? And you will also probably want to make a roll, depending on your approach.

Charisma+Intimidation if you're wanting to intimidate him into stopping,
Manipulation+Expression if you want to appeal to him, or Manipulation + Intimidate if you're wanting to convince him that bad things will happen to him if he doesn't comply. Leadership + Charisma could possibly work as well. It all depends on how you're going about it.

Stone is going to draw his weapon and keep a bead on the night critter. I don't know if there is a function for holding an action in Hunter, but if there is then that is what Stone will do.

Jacket fires as well:
[roll0]
Damage: (4 dice, with a couple of extra in case of added damage).
[roll1]

Zipties sprints behind Jacket and follows Tirzah into the bedroom

Oh good! The last post from you that I saw was from the 19th, and on the 20th I posted the above.

So, please reroll your soak from the 1st bullet (taking the 3 soak dice from your vest into consideration), roll a 2nd soak roll for Jacket's 2nd shot, (you'll only have to soak 1 damage, he didn't roll well) and roll me 5 dice for damage for your second shot.

As mentioned above, Ziptie ran after Tirzah with a knife drawn, Jacket is going to fire again, and (even though I'm assuming you shoot again), declare your action for the 3rd combat round for me.

Stone- Did Silky running trigger an attack from you? If so, take your shot.

That's odd because I mentioned to him last night that you wanted a tag.

I would like to continue if the rest of you do. My free-time has been virtually nonexistent in the last couple of months, but it is improving slowly. For that, I apologize. I have also been trying to determine how to get the group to assimilate and bond, without being too heavy handed and railroad-y about it.

I admit, I had hoped that there would be a more spirited inter-character discussion in the DA's office, but I can attribute that to poor setup on my part. Without going into too much exposition, that scene is kinda the equivalent of "you all meet in a tavern". The group has experienced something otherworldly and incomprehensible. You, the Hunters (though you don't realize that is what you are yet), need to stick together and objectively discover that "something strange is going on", and pursue the situation together. Without introducing some sort of "wise old man" to walk you through it, I was attempting to use their forced attendance (and tardy interviewers) at the DA's office to spark some connection between the characters, a reason for them to communicate and work together (i.e., form a "party", for lack of a better word).

Though none of the Edges you displayed were particularly overt, each of you did something that you have no reason to believe should have happened. Peter didn't see anything supernatural, but is actually the lynchpin, because if he figures out a connection (that was the roll I had asked for from him), you would at least have some sort of 'lead' to pursue.

As it stands currently, if I go through with the interviews, it appears that the four of you are each on a path that completely diverges from everyone else. Now, I could contrive another 'chance' meeting, if that would help. Or, if each of you are wanting to 'go it alone', I can do that as well. However, my original plan hinged on the group realizing that it 'is' a group. Again, that can probably be chalked up to poor scene-setting on my part.

Let me know what your thoughts are (as players). I don't want to, as Erasmas alludes to, 'beat a dead horse'. But I think the characters and the players are all compelling, and I am definitely willing to redouble my efforts here. I will, however, require a bit of assistance in getting that 'not quite dead' horse to drink the water, as it were, lol.

Honestly I think part of the issue is that the DAs office isn't really a "safe place" and that Peter is slightly isolated from the others. He has no reason to open up to him and we have no reason to open up while he's around. It makes the group really sitting down and talking and forming a group difficult. If I may suggest something, assuming the "thing" from that night can access the police reports, trying to lure us somewhere and shut us up in a not good enough to instantly kill us all way might at least spark the connections more.

I will certainly continue this as long as it continues however.

Hey all,

I ABSOLUTELY want to keep playing, please don't stop. I partially blame myself for not jumping in as much but I am getting towards the end of my degree (June 22nd, hurrah!) but I also interviewed for a new position with my company last week and that has been eating up a lot of my mental processing power. If I haven't contributed enough, forgive the lapse... I've just been completely swamped with outside interference.

Please don't stop. I am having a really good time and this is one of my only creative outlets.

Edit: Also, I wouldn't stress over the interviews too much. If I were running the show, so to speak, I wouldn't let us all go until all the interviews are over and then we'll probably be more inclined to talk once we're all out of the building at the same time.

I agree with Penguin's suggestion about a secondary scene of more-direct peril that might have a higher chance of "forcing" our characters to bond with one another. As of right now, we're strangers whose only common thread is that we each witnessed something (that was not truly life-threatening... at least for some of us) that we do not understand and that we'd rather forget about entirely.

And congratulations, Gunn, on both fronts!

You recall the description of the man that Tirzah described. You kept an eye on the police investigation, and you were able to peruse some security camera footage that shows the entrance of her apartment building. For just a few frames, (even your tech guys say that this guy was moving like the wind), you can see the cab passenger as he sprints by. The descriptions are very similar. Also, the little bit that was able to be wrung out of Jacket includes information that they were told to meet their boss there. He wouldn't give up a name, but a planted stool-pigeon planted in his cell was able to get him to talk about the incident. They were there to take something from her, "somethin' real personal", and he described "the Boss man" as 'smooth, fancy dresser, a tall skinny white dude that can whoop some ass". All of those descriptions also sound similar to the various reports of the incident, from the cab driver, and the FBI agent included. It's not a sure thing, but there is a possibility that Tirzah's attacker and Jacket's boss are one and the same person.

The Intuition Roll- Most of it was discussed already in OOC, but.. You are all able to discern the fact that it's going to be difficult to get anyone to believe what ACTUALLY happened out there. You further realize that this investigation has probably got a lot of publicity, as two separate law-enforcement agencies were involved at the scene (namely Peter and Stone), and the fact that it has gone instantly to the DA's office means someone up high has some serious interest in it.

I'll have the Peter, Stone and Hooks updated in the morning.

My plan to return to more frequent posting has become more difficult. We lost another person from my department to a promotion, and my workload has been sky-high since I'm having to absorb some of what they were doing. I don't know when that person will be replaced. I normally do most of my posting from work, but free-time has been almost nil. I don't know what to say. I don't want you guys to be forced to move at a snails pace, and, at least for the time being, I can't commit with certainty to posting more frequently. So, with that in mind, I am willing to continue running this game, but if you stay, it will have to be with the understanding that my postrate will be erratic. I certainly wouldn't blame anyone that doesn't want to contend with that, as it can have the effect of ruining the story. So, that being said, let me know where you all stand. For the record, as long as even one of you wants to play, I will keep the game up, because when I DO get to post, I am having a great time. I'm a dinosaur!

But seriously, no worries man. Real life is far more important than a game. Besides, I'm having fun and I'm erratic at checking the board too. I just got my promotion and start the new job on June 2nd so I'm going to be up to my eyeballs in alligators, too. No worries :).

So... who here thinks things are going to go very badly very quickly?

I can certainly agree that they are going very badly!
I dunno about very quickly, but it certainly does look like Hooks could wind up back in jail before he really becomes a Hunter.

Let's hope the rest of us can confuse the issue enough for him to get off with a warning at most ;).

Haha I'll do my best! At least none of you are essentially being sexually harassed in a statement interview XD. Who wants to take bets on whether or not that Leona Mane is actually some kind of vampire or ghoul or something? :nale:

I'll bet, I'll bet!! <raises hand enthusiastically> Been packing and in the process of moving through this weekend. I think we could supply the Houston area Salvation Army with furniture and clothing for weeks with what we're weeding out. (If it's not one thing, it's another lately.. sigh..)

No worries Pife! We're all grown-ups here and real life absolutely takes precedent over a game. We're patient!

I resent the implication that I am an adult in anything but chronological age.

Now get off my lawn!

But yeah, delays are to be expected. Good luck with the move.

Okay maybe that rules out VAMPIRE, but it might not rule out a ghoul! Right? Hmmm

Or she just got a call from a ghoul or someone else on the payroll.

Or she just looked at Hooks' record.

They give you blood transfusions?

rofl.. Awesome.

Okay, that was a long period of silence on my part. Apologies, I was moving, getting a daughter graduated from High School, and yelling at my home ISP, because they didn't realize that their coverage ended across the street from my new house. Yes, that's right. Across. the. street.

So, new service with a new provider starts on Thursday. My mandatory overtime is done until next spring. As of Thursday, it looks like (finally) it can be all systems go with no further delays in sight. That being said, I may have worn all of your patience out getting to this point. (Trust me, it's not just this game I've fallen behind on, I've been running several, and they've all been suffering lately because of the madness).

That being said, assuming I still have players, I still want to run this game. Can I has ninth life pleeze? Surely I've already chewed through the other 8 keeping four of you through all of this insanity. If you guys are still here, we still have a game.

I'm still in. I believe Jinchi is as well but I'll poke him to check in in-person.

Confirmed with Jinchi, he won't be continuing with us.

Might be hard to add new characters but would putting Pete and Madge up for "adoption" be viable? Just because my gamer brain is squirrely about less than four players.
