Arcane Caster Wanted!

Party of five (5) experienced adventurers (almost third level!) seeks arcane caster to assist in saving world from possible apocalypse, or at least to assist in decimating some undead and the occasional abomination.

Equal shares.

Apply at the Feral Dog in Diamond Lake. Ask for Mirriana.
These are from the original post:

1. Its D&D 3.5 obviously

Character creation
2. Stats are 28 pb
3. Starting at level 2 - I expect the GM will advance any new character along with the rest of the party, and we are on the cusp of level 3.
4. WBL (900 gp)
5. 1 flaw/ 1 trait. If the flaw is not relevant it will be vetoed.
6. NO Homebrew. No fixes.
7. Max hps at level 1. Rolled or take 1/2 for others (must decide first)
8. Alignment: Not evil
9. Multiclassing: Rules are in effect; partial BAB and saves are being used, but the +2 bonus for a good save is available only once.
10. Available sources

Players Handbook I + II
Complete Warrior/Arcane/Divine/Scoundrel/Mage
Frostburn/Sandstorm/Stormwrack
Tome Magic (Pact magic / Binder only)
Races Stone/Wild/Destiny
Magic Item Compendium / Spell Compendium
Magic Incarnum
Anything from other sources you may request but may be "no". Small things like a feat or a spell are more likely then say a class.

Posting interest as a Wizard Necromancer.

Would you allow the Vulture familiar from Dragon Magazine? Uses statistics of a Hawk, but it grants a +4 bonus on Fortitude saves made to resist disease.

We currently have three divine casters (two clerics and a shifter druid), a changeling rogue and a samurai. So we are good for melee and healing, if party balance is your thing.

Here's a list of current characters for comparison :

Player | Character | Race | Class
RCgothic | Mirrianna (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=631555) | Human | Cleric 2
Redzimmer | Halsephus (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=631138)| Snow Elf | Samurai 2
RaviStrife | Leila (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=631943)| Human | Wizard 1/Binder1
Stegyre | Marten (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=630937)| Quarter Elf | Druid
Revilo300 | Bernard (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=632399)| Changeling | Rogue
Fellhammer | Kavuloia 'Goatracker' (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=630935)| Goliath | Cleric/LA+1

And unfortunately we seem to have lost Leila, so that's why we're seeking a new arcanist.

Mirriana's the leader of the group basically by default, being the only one who's both willing and trusted not to lead the group off on a wild goat chase or something. A member of the diamond lake watch, cleric of Mystara and sister of the little boy who disappeared into the Whispering Cairn all those years ago.

Halsephus is the last of a line of snow elf nobles living in after goblins and a dragon destroyed his home. He resents that he's had to lower himself to the level of commoners and after his performances thus far has self esteem issues.

Leila is a librarian and friend of Mirriana who learned her magic from a spellbook. Recently she's started hearing voices in her head and has become silent and withdrawn. We suspect her mind may have succumbed to denizens of the warp or dungeon dimensions or something.

Marten is a shifter druid who turns into a pine marten. Has the useful ability to blink through doors. Generally quiet and a useful scout.

Bernard is a shapeshifter rogue, and as such gets to be both our party face and skill monkey.

Goattracker as we mostly call him, is basically Brian Blessed if Brian Blessed were a half-naked goliath cleric of Kavaki.

And Cardea, good to see you taking an interest! Always interested to see what you come up with. In fact I think you've been involved before. Does Claire Sientel (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=630930) ring a bell? A wizard necromancer, hmmm?

I shall throw my hat into the mix! I think I will try something different than a wizard though since I have played enough of them... so Wu Jen it is! I shall look at other sheets and devise a character that will fit in with the dynamics mechanically and personality wise.

Hi, I'm interested in playing this game. Right now I'm thinking I would play a Bard. I'm wondering if the Masterwork Horn, Natural (Song and Silence 46) or Song of the Heart (Eberron Campaign Setting 60) would be allowed? Also, if you could please tell me what events have occurred recently in your game, it would help me weave my character's story into your story.

Oy DrK, stop scaring off our candidates! :smalltongue:

Recent events:
We thoroughly investigated the whispering cairn where Mirriana's brother's remains were found and laid to rest. We came upon the final chamber, but access was prevented by a ghost called Alastair Land, who won't grant us access until we've found out why the remains of his family have been stolen from their graves and returned them.

So on our return to diamond lake, the mayor's wizard brother pointed us in the direction of an old observatory, whereupon we've encountered the walking dead.

And that's pretty much it thus far. Oh, and we have a pet baby owlbear. Nobody's sure whether it will eat us in revenge for killing its mother yet.

Whilst another goliath barbarian would probably fit in, what we really need is a wizard, sorcerer, wu jen or something of that ilk. Ninja'd by the edit. Hmmm. I'm not sure if a bard is what we're looking for. We have skills, combat and diplomacy pretty well sorted. Whilst the bard does have arcane power, it's limited by level, list and number of spells per day in comparison to what we'd ideally need.

Sorry about that. At first I thought a Barbarian would be a good fit, because I went down the list and saw caster, caster, caster, but upon further inspection, you guys have a very strong melee beef setup. I didn't want us to be stepping on each others' toes, hence the change. I thought that Leila already had the Arcanist covered, so I went with Bard because they're always a fun superfluous role. Right now I'm thinking an Enchantress/Illusionist Sorceress (I'll have contingencies for mindless like those undead, though). I was just heading to bed, though, so I'll have to work on this later.

MrE

Not strictly an Arcanist, but would a Shugenja be a good fit? I'm currently toying with Gnome Shugenja into Divine Prankster or a more straight up wizard type with a true hatred of the undead (he would be more of a Gandalf figure than a bookworm).

Edit: And noting that you have a Goliath, are you playing with LA buyoff? Because a Chaos Gnome just looks so tempting.

LA was adjudicated at level 1 by having a -1 on all D20 rolls until level 2, whereupon it works as usual. There is no buy off in play to my knowledge.

I'm not familiar with shugenja, so I'm not really in a position to judge its appropriateness. Looks like the spell list is reasonably arcane-y though.

So, I accidentally lied about going to sleep.... Anyway, as I was building my Sorceress, I quickly realized she wouldn't be able to keep up with the rest of this party, so I'm shelving that concept. I had a really cool picture of a half-gnome/half-fey, too... So, I built Arcos Avernus (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=766945), the Halfling Transmuter, since I never get to play one as they tend to a bit high-OP for most games. So now requests:

Spells: Aberrate (BoVD); unfortunate flavor, but it's just a scaling natural armor bonus that caps at +5. Lesser Shivering Touch (Frostburn); never hurts to ask, right? Spirit Worm (MoF); if anything, this spell is weak, but I didn't know what else to take.

Flaw: Magical Overload (http://www.realmshelps.net/cgi-bin/featbox.pl?feat=Magical_Overload) (Dragon #327)

Alternate Class Features: Transmutable Memory (UA, ~64). It's kind of like Versatile Spellcaster, but somewhat better and only for Transmutation spells. Replaces specialist spell slots.

PrC: Halruaan Elder (SS). I don't like the flavor of this PrC since it's so Faerun specific, but it serves a valuable niche as a Metamagic specialist PrC that's not overpowered like Incantatrix or Spelldancer. Then again, I hear circle magic is overpowered, but I don't know much about it or have any interest in it. I would gladly take this PrC without the circle magic stuff. Heck, you could replace the Halruuan Adept requirement with Skill Focus(Basket Weaving) and I'd take it. If you're feeling especially generous, Skill Focus(Spellcraft) might make a suitable substitute as both feats pump Spellcraft.

Also, a ruling on how touch attacks with charges per caster level (e.g. Chill Touch) interact with Reach Spell would be helpful going forward, but I just dumped a ton on your plate as it is.

There was no buy off on LA's, I was just allowed to start playing one at level one with a -1 to most of my d20 rolls.

Which element would you pick as your main one for the Shugenja? That choice really defines the character.

I'm pretty sure MrE is asking if the LA buyoff optional rule (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/races/reducingLevelAdjustments.htm) will be in effect. It wouldn't come into play until ECL 4 anyway, so naturally no one in your group has done it yet.

That or a focused specialist illusionist? I LOVE illusion magic.

I had mentioned it in the first thread. But I would hesitate about an illusion or enchanment focus as the game has quite a lot of vermin and undead that are immune to mind-affecting. Not saying "don't play one" just think carefully.

Aberrate is ok - but you may want to question using BoVD spells with a good party. NO to shivering touch line obviously
No to the flaw. Its not enough of a detraction to justify a feat
The UA optional levels are okay.
No to the PrC - its on the list of known metamagic abusers and I don't tend to allow FR things.
Reach would apply to all of the touches until the spell is expended.

I find that that's when it challenges the player to find the few illusion spells that do affect undead ;) as an illusionist I usually drop enchantment though.

I just like focused specialist. It challenges a wizard to not rely on batman and rely on what she has available. I'll punch up a few specialists, how about that? ^^

For backgrounding, the campaign is using the default Greyhawk world.

I don't remember specifically if DrK uses regional feats, but I figure anyone who likes to immerse their character into the appropriate game world would like to know where they can come from.

As well, ties to Diamond Lake (the starting town) were recommended for aspiring players in the initial recruitment. Feel free to connect your pc to one or more of ours through the info on our sheets.

Yeah, I forgot about the whole [Evil] spell thing. Would Combat Readiness (DotU) make an acceptable substitution? 1/3 CL insight bonus to initiative for minutes/level. No Drow flavor attached to it that I can find. No alignment descriptor either, heh.

Would the Brash (http://www.realmshelps.net/cgi-bin/featbox.pl?feat=Brash) flaw be acceptable? I know as a Wizard I don't want to be in melee, but I imagine most enemy melee will want to get near me, and this would make it that much worse when they succeed. Also, I recently noticed that Easy Metamagic (http://www.realmshelps.net/cgi-bin/featbox.pl?feat=Easy_Metamagic) is from Dragon Magazine so I'll request that feat, too.

And yeah it's no Incantatrix but it's strong PrC in its own right. It's tough to gauge what power level you're going for the long run by looking at level 2 PCs, but I suppose that's the point of requiring approval... Fortunately the other PrCs I'm interested in are in the approved books. Btw, I'm not after all this metamagic stuff for persist shenanigans or something crazy like that. The idea is to use Reach + Chain to apply appropriate buffs mid-combat.

Also, I've been up for about 36 hours now so please forgive any errors/stupidity/rambling in this post. I'm not 100% here, but I didn't want to go to bed without replying. I'll read up on the setting stuff redzimmer posted tomorrow, as the only Greyhawk I've played before is Temple of Elemental Evil.

Decided against Illusionist. Its a lot of work to research all the spells that dont effect undead and the ones I do know are just... not that grand.

So, I've chosen to go Evoker. I'll be a master of Cold spells. Lot of my things will come from Frostburn, I'll make sure it all adds up though, ^^.

Wand Chamber: Dungeonscape Pg 34, I'd like to put one of these in my quarterstaff, basically just turning it into a giant wand that I can smack people around with, Is that allowed?

orrr... Dungeonscape Pg 33. Wand Bracer. Can I buy one of these? Basically just stores wands in a bracer that allow me to pull them out of it as a free action, Would prefer the wand chamber to be honest.

Thoughts?

Beguiler is only for one level for Ultimate Magus, and it will help make up for Wizards' poor spells per day early on (especially with that ACF that costs me my bonus slots). Fits the skulky halfling that doesn't like to get his hands too dirty also.

Also, does anyone have suggestions for where I can read up on the Greyhawk setting? I found a bit about the Free City, but otherwise most of the stuff that came up was more about Gygax and the characters from his original games than the actual setting itself. Interesting reads, but not pertinent to this campaign, I imagine.

Greyhawk (http://www.canonfire.com/wiki/index.php?title=Greyhawk) is a setting Gygax himself accidentally created in a sense. That site should give you a general idea on the setting itself but most of it is up to how the DM runs Greyhawk. I personally prefer the classic Greyhawk idea, A large city with a maze of dungeons beneath it. Dungeon crawl style. I thought it was so cool. Then again, it makes it a challenge for a DM to pull story out of that. Its better in person than on a PbP since roleplaying gets the most attention here.

As for beguiler, If you do get selected, Make sure you make use of your conjuration spells more-so than your illusion spells. Enchantment (being one of your banned schools) I believe is unavailable to you even if you take another class that offers spellcasting. Not sure, but possibly. Also, Be careful using any illusion spells that are Mind-Affecting, as most of this campaign we've been warned is undead, and Mind-Affecting doesnt affect most undead, and the ones it does, have such a high save its almost pointless, even with a beguilers talentedly high DC's. (Beguilers one of my favorite classes Lol, almost made one, but figured an evoker would be a bit more... appreciated..)

I'll double check on that specialist wizard thing but I've got a gut feeling thats how it works. If i'm correct and you do hit ultimate magus that very well might cripple your beguiler skills heavily, seeing as a beguilers ultimate weapon is his mental distortion of the world.

Then again, Enchantment is an easy one to ban seeing as its near useless outside of town, Until you snag Dominate Monster and begin conquering Terrasques. Okay not really, but still.

^^ I'll double check the wizard thing for you. But that's a good spot to read up on some basic Greyhawk nonsense that isnt an eye-sore.

Disregard, Shoulda googled that. I always thought it was that way, then again Complete Arcane was one of the ones I didnt read front to back, and was stuck with a 3.0 players handbook for almost ever.

So yes, Enchantment (Even though banned) Can be used with the beguiler, but just remember 99.999% of enchantment spells dont work on undead, since charming them would only charm them to eat you. Pity, Sucks playing a pretty girl and trying to make your move on an undead that only devours your soul. Oh well.

Wow, thanks a lot Crestfallen. I'll get on reading that after I go out and shovel some snow... stupid snow...

And yeah, I figured Illusions/Enchantments are useless vs. undead, but they'll come into play eventually. And besides, I've got at least two mage armor targets (three assuming Marten didn't trade out his animal companion or get it barding), so that'll let me get some mileage out of the class straight away. Having a few enchantments in my back pocket would be nice, but I wouldn't change anything if it was ruled that I couldn't use them, nor would I be bothered if the restriction was purely DM fiat.

True that, The mage armor alone will be of use, and the excessive slots a beguiler gets is a reason I love playing them. That and full spell list + Spontaneous + Int based + Rogue like + Specialist? Yes Please.

Theres plenty of spells that screw with undead, just dont try Illusioning a dragon, placing a fake wall in front of them (which almost never works) or color spraying them. Invisibility is a good one (so long as they dont have lifewatch or whatever its called), Greater Mirror Image is always a fun one, Hence I left Illusion open. I'm aware banning Abjuration is a stupid move, along with banning Necromancy in an almost all undead campaign, but I'm not a fan of Necromancy on a good character, and Abjuration almost takes away the scares of being a wizard. Plus I love Illusion far too much to ban it, Conjuration saves my butt too many times to count, Without Evocation I dont get to see my numbers shoot across the screen or feel a fistful of dice in my hands, and without transmutation, whats the point? Did you snag any of the transmutation alternate class features for specialist wizards? If you havent taken a look at those theres some unfairly awesome ones in there. The ability to buff yourself is kinda nice, I guess, saves a spell, and the ability to turn any spell into a transmutation spell (including banned spells) Is also quite... Ridiculous I suppose. So you can always pick up fireball and use it as a specialist spell, Increase the caster level on it, etc. I liked the idea of being an evoker for a change (Because I never am) but wanted to be theme based, and thought fire would be too easy, Hence I'm running around with cold spells. I know its gonna bite me later when some cold resistant undead get thrown at me before I get Piercing Cold but eh, Theres the fun in my mind, Limiting yourself.

Wow I talk too much.

Tl;Dr, Links a good link, Beguilers are cool, Transmuter Variants?, Cold magic cool.

Backstory has been put at the bottom, Kept it short and sweet. Didn't wanna bore you with his exciting life of charming women. He probably should've went to bard school huh?

I just gotta touch him up with some mundane items, Torches, Spellbook, Rations, Ink, Parchment, The works you know? Shouldnt take me long. Might do it in the morning, I'm slowly getting sleepy and I've-a campaign to continue DMing.

That awkward moment when all 3 candidates have banned Enchantment as a school.
