View Full Version : Fun With Abberations (3.5)

Hello!

I'm DMing a campaign in which my level 5 party will eventually enter a Kaorti Cyst (small one--it's a cyst pilgrimage, so it's not crazy inhabited).

I'm looking for fun abberations that the Kaorti might have brought along with them from the Far Realms. Of course, the standard Skybleeders and Rukanyr are a bit too difficult, so I'm looking for fun little abberations.

Any suggestions?

Well, I can't remember if I'm thinking of Gricks or Grells, but they both make not-too-bad guard dogs.

If you're willing to bring in Daelkyr into the picture, this thread has some ideas you might like, especially towards the end. (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=323220) Though I can't recall what relationship is suggested between the Kaorti and Daelkyr.

Smaller Kythons from the BoVD, though they need an update to 3.5 and a CR increase. Just be careful about how many you use at once, as they can be unbelievably dangerous.

They could have a few Toschar from Lords of Madness, which are basically the crawl-into-someone-and-wear-them creatures. Those could easily infiltrate local settlements and act as scouts.

Listen to this guy :smallwink:.

The Kaorti and Daelkyr entries assume different campaign worlds so there's no explicit link. However, "anything in DnD has a place in Eberron". Xoriat isn't the Far Realm (though it may be heavily tainted) but it's not hard to have the Kaorti be creations of the Daelkyr or just generally corrupted by Xoriat.

Kythons are aberrations but not from the Far Realm (many aberrations aren't actually). As the DM, the OP can tweak this of course.

Toschar are a fine choice as they're both connected to the Far Realm and are only CR 4. They're intelligent though and don't really have the same goals as the Kaorti so they'll probably need a more solid reason than just being "brought along" for working with them.

Anyways, below is a list from the first in Afroakuma's Planar Questions Thread series (which you should definitely check out if you have any interest in the planes) listing creatures from the Far Realm:

Monster Manual
• Aboleth (tenuous connection)
• Cloaker (origin)
• Gibbering Mouther
• Skum (via aboleth)

Monster Manual II
• Moonbeast (possible)
• Mooncalf (possible)
• Psurlon (reprinted in Lords of Madness)
• Rukanyr (via kaorti)
• Skybleeder (via kaorti)
• Windghost (possible)
• Wyste

Monster Manual III
• Mindshredder (possible)
• Runehound (possible)

Monster Manual IV
• Zern (possible)

Monster Manual V
• Mind Flayers of Thoon

Draconomicon
• Squamous Spewer

Dragon
• Aleku (Dragon 348)
• Amoebic Crawler (Dragon 330)
• Cranial Encyster (Dragon 330)
• Kaortic Hulk (Dragon 330)
• Kyra (Dragon 348)
• Nightseed (Dragon 330)
• Urquirsh (Dragon 358)

Dungeon
• The Thing From the Lake (Dungeon 134)

Elder Evils
• Brood Spawn template

Epic Level Handbook
• Neh-Thalggu
• Pseudonatural Creature template (reprinted in Lords of Madness)
• Uvuudaum

Fiend Folio
• Kaorti (reprinted in Dragon 358)

Frostburn
• Snowcloak (origin)

Lords of Madness
• Cloaker, Shadowcloak Elder (origin)
• Half-Farspawn template
• Shaboath (via aboleth)

Monsters of Faerun
• Cloaker Lord (origin)

Planar Handbook
• Dharculus

Some are probably missing but it's probably as complete a list as you'll get in one post. As you can see, many are not exactly "small" aberrations (or aberrations at all) but you can pick out the ones that are (small that is) for now. In the future you may also want to use the higher-powered ones as well.

Stonesinger in MM3 pg 168 is really just a baby Rukanyr.
Also, chokers are a classic, maybe Kaorti pet monkeys?

I thought the Dharculi were from Ethereal?
Also, probably not actual Far-Realm, but Nothics from Miniature's Handbook are cool.
Damage dealing Gaze attack.

Psudonatural chickens. Fresh "eggs" on the road are nice.

That's quite an extensive list, thank you!

Thank you all for the suggestions. Things are going to get a bit horrific . . .
