Oh, darn, my synthesist poster didn't make it.

Anywho, is this from an anime/manga: http://ddemotivators.tumblr.com/image/81291876970 ?

It looks waaaay too good not to be.
It is not, in fact. It is fanart of a card (http://cardfight.wikia.com/wiki/Leading_Jewel_Knight,_Salome) from Cardfight!! Vanguard made by a professional mangaka.

Fascinating! It actually reminds me of the Metaforge Psionic PrC from Pathfinder. One of their abilities makes your mind blade take on a crystalline form.

That's an Akantor Greatsword, which means this is Monster Hunter, which means that "maid" is probably the PC and has almost certainly killed more and meaner dragons than four Skyrim main characters put together :smalltongue:.

And now a little one for those who watched Wakfu:

Yeah, that looked like a Monster Hunter weapon to me, but I wasn't certain because A) I don't use the Greatsword (I used it a bit, but I just unlocked high-ranking missions on my first character, who I've leveled up the Long Sword for, and that's taken ninety hours) and B) I don't think that's a real armor set in the game.

Meaner I'll give you. More... is no, unless were talking about a starting out dragonborn.
Seriously, you fight a lot of dragons in skyrim.

How many is "a lot?" Because if I remember right from my brief time playing Monster Hunter Tri, the less demanding armor sets take about a dozen kills to finish. Each.

It depends. Plot wise you only have to kill about three but tbh if you're playing Skyrim for plot you picked the wrong game. As random encounters go they add a touch of danger the first few times, but you will end up killing lots to get access to the different words of shouts. If you make full use of fast travel, it is entirely possible to encounter none at all but on my main playthrough I think I'm on something like eighty dragons killed, judging by the amount of dragon bones I have in a chest in Whiterun. This is playing casually with no dragon hunting, because if you want to do that, you will easily treble that number. Of course, given that I play an unpatched version it does give the nice feature of dragon corpses randomly dropping from the sky but I didn't think it fit to count them.

Fair I guess. Although with skyrim, theres the 15 named dragons, most of which you have to kill to progress, 10 at specific points around the game world, plus a theoretically-infinite number of them due to random dragon attacks.

...Although now I want to know which dragons would win in a fight. Skyrim dragons have glass jaws, sure, but they also have freaky magic bullcrap and possibly a high flight ceiling on their side...

I would tend to side with the Skyrim dragons, by virtue of being sapient. Monster Hunter dragons (or wyverns in general) always seemed kinda like wild animals to me. Mind you, I've only played MHFU, so there's that.

In any case, Skyrim wishes it had Monster Hunter's armor system. Or I do, anyway. Heck, I wish every game had Monster Hunter's armor system.

And speaking of a poster:

Agreed. It's why I like Toriko: 90% of the point of fighting monsters in that world is so you can eat them. I need to start watching that anime again...

How many is "a lot?" Because if I remember right from my brief time playing Monster Hunter Tri, the less demanding armor sets take about a dozen kills to finish. Each.

It's possible to get through all but the main and DLC quests of Skyrim without fighting even a single dragon. You just have to not follow the main quest beyond Whiterun, and there aren't even any random encounter dragons to worry about from then on. On the opposite end of things, following the main quest unlocks random dragon encounters, which happen about once per half hour and have about a 75% chance of going after you (the other 25%, they just fly away or aggro a random goat/mudcrab/wolf with hilarious results). With fast travel and a bit of know-how, it's possible to farm dragons nonstop by going to Word Walls in a cycle, killing the resident dragon, and repeating; thanks to fast travel taking in-game time, by the time you've cleared them all the first one has respawned. That said, a normal Dragonborn who goes from level 1 to about level 40 or so without deliberately taking one extreme or the other in dragon hunting probably won't end up fighting more than about 50 dragons over the course of his career, and likely quite a few less.

As for meaner, I haven't played Monster Hunter but the top-tier dragons are nuts. Dirt standard dragons sometimes lose fights with other random encounters, though, so take that with a grain of salt.

The best moment in Skyrim is when you see a dragon get pulled down by swarms of mudcrabs. The number of times these supposedly ferocious predators fall prey to the most mundane threats is hilarious.

If you give it something like the Celestial or Fiendish template, it should qualify for Leadership, at least. If you want an intelligent rust monster cohort that doesn't require transplanar breeding programs... would using Baleful Polymorph on it, then Awakening it, then using Dispel Magic to turn it back into a rust monster work? A brief bit of googling results in a great wailing and gnashing of teeth and shrugging of shoulders as to whether a creature laboring under the first would qualify for the second. Though I think I would allow it, personally, if the original creature possessed animal-level intelligence (or if they failed their will save).

This gives me a crazy itch for an adventure hook, too: an awakened animal is being pursued by a group of adventurers. Said adventurers are the awakened animal's former allies; they Awakened him after a run-in with the baleful polymorph spell, as above, and now have access to Dispel Magic and want to return him to normal. But that would mean that the personality he has now would be completely erased when the old self is brought back, since dispelling the polymorph returns one's old ability scores and memories.

Also I wonder if you could BP a given creature, claim the resulting kitty-cat as an animal companion and then dispel it. But I think that, at the very least, is way too ripe for abuse, all things considered. :P

Anyway! An unrelated poster:

(I would like to point out I still put "pretty good" in that description.)

Honestly, the one time I ran Paranoia, my Friend Computer voice was based around the voice of the Turrets. My friends thought it was creepy, so I think it worked well.

...one character per player per session? What? This is Paranoia. Games don't LAST more than a session. And players get six lives at a minimum. :smalltongue:

Also, Friend Computer should have a friendly voice. Making him sound sinister misses the point. He should be terse and friendly even as he sentences people to death for treason.

They only last that long because re-inserting a character back in the middle of a mission is a pain. So any deaths are final until the next mission. Its not as much a 'how will we fulfill our mission' as to 'how hilariously/disastrously off-rail can we go before someone blows us all up'.

(Note: If a grenade says it's timer is 11 seconds, check to see what number system its written in. The difference between binary and decimal can be very big while 'priming' a grenade).

and not to forget there are 10 kinds of people, those that understand binary and those that don't.

Agreed. It's why I like Toriko: 90% of the point of fighting monsters in that world is so you can eat them. I need to start watching that anime again......Thaaaaaaanks, Doorhandle. I had stuff to do the last couple of days, ya know. :P

Seriously, that show is so silly and dumb and amazing. It's like Fist of the North Star if you gave it a sense of humor and replaced all the exploding bikers with Redwall-level food porn.
(Also, the producers for the English dub are named Hunter and Cook? Funimation, you are having a giraffe.)

But TB, the Female Titan Debacle.I know to what you refer, but not why you bring it up. :P
So I'll just say that the show is good at what it does, but doesn't do what I wanted it to, and trust that will serve as an adequate response!

Attack on Titan.

It's very a grim anime/manga, quite good, and I recommend it if blood and gore don't bother you.

DO NOT LOOK IT UP ON THE INTERNET BEFORE WATCHING, unless you want some HUGE plot-twists completely spoiled.

Thank you.

As far as Anime goes my favorite is Hellsing Ultimate OVA, but I haven't really been keeping up to date with 'new' anime.

I can also recommend Kill la Kill, if you're looking for new anime loves. It's from most of the same team who did Gurren Lagann, and stylistically it's more or less that with the giant robots and revolutionary ideals replaced with school uniforms, hyperexaggerated fan-service and biting social satire. Similar levels of hot blood, if that's your thing.

Anyway, on topic: shelter's all well and good, but how about sustenance?
http://i62.tinypic.com/1zdrlzr.jpg

Or, ya know, when you've got the spell levels to spare...

http://i57.tinypic.com/k4hzex.jpgAlso, wasn't there some older-edition spell that let you make it rain any liquid by drinking a drop? As I recall, the text suggested using poison or acid or something, but I'm thinking a shower of fine aged brandy sounds like a delightfully decadent way to wash off the trail dust. :smallcool:

The sides in this case being "good guy," "bad guy," and "not-doing-much-of-anything-that-really-affects-anyone-else guy."

Which, incidentally, is poster-material ripe for the exploiting:

Pretty sure that's Peter Petrelli from heroes. He basically has the power of every other hero he interacts with. At first he thinks it's only when he's near them, but then he realizes that no, he's just bad at controlling his powers. Outside a few "potential future" style episodes he remains kind of a useless sap throughout the series.

Well, if it were me, and my special mount or minion got sassy, I would break out one of the Polymorph scrolls I keep around for just such an occasion so they would be sentient enough to understand why I was... "downsizing" them.

This somehow reminds me, I remember reading a sci-fi book once where there was this race of engineered livestock that was sentient; the aliens who bred them poked them in the brain with a needle when they were young so they wouldn't feel bad about eating them later.

At one point, the main character, a human raised by them, talked about how he felt sorry for them, so one of his caretakers said something like "Yes, I know dear, but that's the way it has to be. We've tried breeding them to be nonintelligent, but it ruins the taste!"

Wish I could find that quote, there's a demotivator in there somewhere.
And now I feel terrible for saying both of those things, so pardon my while I produce something a little more in keeping with my bubbly and chipper alignment:

the first weapon she gives you is her Holy avenger. Everything after that you can get from her is increasingly evil. Their art style tends towards dramatic changes in a character's appearance as opposed to gradual changes (the exception ive seen so far being Prime Alteon). Evil isnt one big happy family (good isnt either but then the leaders we see of good are all sisters or said sister's boyfriends).

Granted, i just want to give Gravelyn a hug.

well keep in mind, this is the same game where you can get necromancer items at the local paladin fortress fighting against the undead, including the tome needed for getting the necromancer class. or get items themed about the enemy your fighting this week from your quest-giver. I personally choose to see it as her just giving you the things that the undead drop as a reward for your efforts- y'know, like trophies. you kill a dragon, you get a dragon themed sword/armor, no matter nonsensical it is. its primarily a parody MMO game after all.

There is alot of backstory to the world of lore that we dont have to tell us the exact morality involving necromancy in setting, and the paladin order teaching necromancers may be a series of lectures and coursework involving Responsible necromancy (inversely its a direct refference to the Templar and Circle of Dragon Age.). Or the necromancer doesnt actually practice in universe necromancy but something that resembles the effects of necromancy without the "Ode de Evil"

However, alot of the evidence of what Yara is doing is not that. the first line she hands away the avenger. Ok, thats a very paladin thing to do. the second set shes handing out salvage from the enemies in the area. That doesnt explain why in 3+4 shes crafting Unholy and Frost themed weapons respectively. (with area 2 having blood themed weapons). that looks alot more like Warcraft 3 Deathknights.

toapat, I have obtained spider armor from the quest-giver that is bidding me to kill spiders, chaos weaponry from good and evil rep or even alliance shops, and I can get the armor of the enemies of space-bounty hunter I'm working for, as well as zombie armor and weaponry from guys that are trying to kill zombies during a zombie apocalypse, and so on and so forth.

trust me, its nothing special or alarming, its just equipment that is thematic with the place she is in, it has nothing to do with the story, and everything to do with providing you reason to kill a lot of things to get another cool weapon. AQworlds pretty much lives on getting you to kill things to expand your fully customizable appearance. so they provide incentives at every opportunity they can, mostly in the form of shops and quests that drop loot with cool appearances.

all this talk is reminding me of the AQworlds demotivators I've made:

Ah, but would they still qualify as spiders in that case? Clearly, to answer that question we need to keep turning spiders into chocolate, eating them, and then trying to cast spider climb until we find a formula that works. Which is certainly the type of magical research that I can get behind.

Also:

Also also, on the subject of big vs. small spiders, I imagine the average wizard needs all the protein they can get. Have you seen how scrawny those guys are? That can't be healthy, they definitely need more spider in their diet.

In City of Heroes, the player could get random quests leading up to a bank heist from listening to their police radio. In the City of Villains expansion, villainous characters could get the same type of missions by reading... a newspaper.

Reminds me of part of my campaign. I decided to be a bit mean to my party, so I threw them into the Tomb of Horrors. However, to be nice, it was a VR version of the first half of the ToH, and they had infinite respawns (although the fighter, who died some 10+ times to the gargoyle, did have a slight issue where his body didn't recognize his mind at the end, so the Gnomes put him in a spare Warforged body they had lying around). Then I told them that the REAL ToH was in the world, and that they might get a quest to go there later… without the infinite lives.

One of my friends had a character whose had an Aura of Overwhelmingly both Law and Chaos. They were a Paladin of Law, who ended up sworn to a Chaotic Deity (for rather complicated reasons), and hence had both Auras. Usefully, this made them Immune to both Hammer of Chaos and Order's Wrath, among other things.

actually, thats purely houserule that he gains immunity. the Paladin Succubus on WotC.com is vulnerable to litterally every SRD alignment attack because she counts as Lawful, Chaotic, Good, and Evil (if she counted as True Neutral then she would take full damage from all alignment attacks in the game). Having a corner alignement is realistically safer then anything else because that at least protects from 3 of the 5 effects in a group.

Hey, its not True Neutral, which is vulnerable to ALL of the alignment attacks in the game except for the Holy weapon modifier (although with the slight reprieve of typically taking half damage).

yea but its not just that.

its that, combined with:
- the fact that you probably can't have any intercourse when your existence has been based around that up until you became a paladin
-evil beings formerly your allies will attack you
-good beings who still think your evil will attack you
-all the while still having to obey the paladin code no matter what. which includes not telling a lie, so you can't shapeshift to avoid being spotted.

which means a succubus becoming a paladin is kind of like daring the world to come attack her all day, every day, and if they're good you can't do any real harm to them, while no town in the prime material plane will probably accept you, and the ones that will are probably not the towns full of good people, and are more probably hives of scum and villainy full of under-handed skullduggery, whorehouses and the mafia, where you can't do any underhanded tricks, while they still can all the time.

no wonder succubus paladins are rare. any succubus smart enough to want to be redeemed know how risky it would be, and any succubus paladin that has become one, is either dead or one of the most badass people in the world.

i think thats kinda a standard Law of one of them. you are taking one of the highest Charisma's in the game and mating it with one of the most Cha-heavy classes. Throw in Dynamic Priest or Any real paladin homebrew ever and you have a battle babe born of the hells fighting for the heavens. Get her some disasociated class levels and she can use some truly divine guns. Too bad Holysword/Holy Avengers give her negative levels.

edit: Interesting, they actually made a mistake with Eludicia, she gains +2 paladin levels per CR for CR 7-9, meaning at level 20 she is a 6 Fiend, 17 Paladin and can have taken one epic feat.

I get what your saying, but seeing as how in a DnD universe, people would probably have heard of succubus through myths and folktales of how they're temptresses and full of lies and so on, and would have the universe itself backing up their tales of evilness, and how paladins are generally not supposed to lie, that means a succubus has to not deceive people about what she really is. which means she must live her life in her true form. if she lives her life in her true form, that means people see the living description of all those folktales come walking around, in paladin full plate saying she is here to "help, really!" what are they going to think? that is a succubus really trying to be penitent, or just a succubus who is bad at lying trying to do some odd form of temptation? after that, do you think they're really going to let her do anything?

unless disguising yourself somehow isn't lying or not violating the code, I don't see how the situation would not come about, that and this is a demon we are talking about here, I doubt the universe will hold her to laxer standards for no reason and let her lie, if anything she would probably have to live up to even higher standards to keep herself on the path of redemption. and of course she could take out people nonlethally, but that is unlikely to help her case...

The one mistake a lot of people seem to be making is presuming that the code is set in stone and should never bend. That led to a creation and playing of more than one Miko-like paladin and a lot of nerves lost on the part of DM and player alike.

If succubus uses her transformation power to avoid being noticed by common folks that means she is actively avoiding creating conflict she knows her natural appearance will cause. And if somebody asks her a question to which she would have to lie to get out of troubles, let her pass the challenge by twisting the truth, but not outright lying. And when she does that, for the love of all that's good and holy, don't make her fall. Show some understanding to the fact that she's playing a class that is hard to play and in direct contrast with her very nature.

One word that a lot of DMs seem to forget when dealing with paladins... flexibility.

Besides, Eludicia's entry outright states that she has no problem deceiving and lying to evil creatures, demons foremost, because she knows she would get no less in return. And yet, she's still keeping her class features.

I remember reading a long time back about a Paladin of Olidamarra. Everyone kept advising the builder to roll him as a Paladin of Freedom, but: even rogues can live by a code. If you're doing your best to do what's right and live up to the ideal of justice, if the compromises you accept that you have to make are made in the name of the greater good, if you have to subvert the letter of the law to uphold the spirit and defend the common good... if you're doing your honest, level best and working with your eyes open instead of being blindly obedient, and your deity still declares that you have failed and fallen...

Well... maybe your deity was never a legitimate authority in the first place.

He (along with all the other "lead characters") is a massive tool though. hes a Mary Sue of any teenaged boy you would pull out of sophomore year in highschool. sure he looks like a paladin, but then anyone in Shiny Silver armor with gold we are programmed to think of as such. The Charr designed after Darth Vader has more in common with a paladin then him. That and his origin story ruins the single best moment of characterization in the entire original game, even if 90% of people skipped the story and never realized it was there.

its not inferior because its different.

Its inferior because the design philosophy that drove its development was Money, not the passion of the designers. Sure this let them make a game infinitely more polished and functional then the original but it has no personality. The writing also is written with a sledgehammer instead of an eye towards subtlety. in EotN, Gwen convinces you to save her CO, but always presents it with an air of saving the love interest, leading upto a reveal that most players miss. In GW2 the only deviants of sexuality are blatant and open about it.

I'm sorry, but there really wasn't much effective use of subtlety in the first game either, and GW2 had a LOT of passion and enthusiasm in its development, driving its attempts to break from the conventions of the genre and try to offer a more dynamic and engaging experience for players (Even if it didn't manage to live up to the hype).

That said, the lack of Tavern Brawls and the horrible treatment of charr armor are unforgivable sins in the game.

sure, i call hacking away every single defining trait of the original with a chainsaw enthusiastic (DnD rakshasha are more memorable then the Charr). Replacing it with an excavator for bad ideas blizzard has cut from WoW? id never call that passionate.

the first through third campaigns all point to the PCs having died during the respective "Major events" (which they snuck an ******* town into GW2 to retcon). Ogden's entire Epilogue conversation (which was Retconned), The ebon Vanguard being the Ascalon's Chosen who followed Rurik (offset by being explicitly stated with the pre-searing additions which came out a or 2 year later). that the entity called the great destroyer was not the actual one (lets say subtlety of beating someone with a Shovel instead of a sledgehammer for that one).

Sure, there are points where it goes full hog with a sledgehammer but the sledgehammer is the oddity, not the rule in that game.

hey, weapon focus is weak, not virtually useless unless your DM is obsessed with Sub-Saharan Africa.Hey man, you never know when you might wind up on the Outer Planes. Celestial hippos are a force to be reckoned with.

On a vaguely more serious note, the connection was that the two are total opposites of one another. Blessed by Tem-Et-Nu and other totally delicious but mechanically dead feats like Spell Thematics are like hanging a Salvador Dali painting in your living room. No real purpose, but adds a lot of atmosphere and makes for a distinctive and memorable home.

Weapon Focus on the other hand is more like putting rebar in your house's foundation. It adds some important structure to your home, holds everything together when things get rough and makes for a solid base to build off of–but ultimately it's just an added expense that you only buy because the building codes say you have to.

Hold that thought. A game in which the way it makes money isn't taken into account in the design philosophy ends up being much worse at making money and often make people feel bad about having spent money on the game. Not "this game could be better, I don't feel like playing it anymore" but "dammit designers, what the hell did you DO?!" more like. Free-to-play games have it the worst, because there is either no incentive to spend money on it, or it's pay-to-win.

As for passion, there's not a doubt in my mind that the majority of designers loved creating it. Money gives you the tools to create something, passion the willpower to keep going and actually create it. Even if passion wasn't the first thing on their minds, why should one care? Not everyone has a passion for their job, but they still keep doing it. Passion doesn't matter if you're doing a bad job.

That's not to say Guild Wars 2 has bad parts, of course not. But as a whole, it's definitely not bad. I loved that it facilitated things so much for explorer-type players like me. It was awesome while it lasted.
