Hello all, welcome to the dice thread.

I'll also be keeping homerules here for your convenience.

When on the ground and not using 3DMG, the brave soldiers of Humanity's last bastion are capable of sneaking past Titan's and other threats to their safety.

Stealth (Agility + Discipline)

Roll Agility plus discipline and take the average of your two scores. This reflects your character's ability for speed and keeping their cool in the most stressful of situations

On a 10+, your character successfully sneaks by the threat without being detected.
On a 7-9, you pass the threat, but you may encounter an impassable obstacle, take longer than you hoped to, or run smack dab into another threat.
On a 6-, you have been noticed. Prepare to fight or run for your life.

Degrees of Trauma

If you incur multiple instances of being panicked in a short period of time, it will go up this scale:

If you are panicked once, you have the same disadvantage as normal. If you are panicked twice, you become shell-shocked, and will not be able to engage in combat or save any comrades until you have been able to rest. If you become panicked three times in rapid succession, you are traumatized and are incapable of doing anything. Prepare to be eaten.

A small note:

Barring misfortune in combat, blades and gas will last as long as the plot needs them to. On a more quantifiable basis, though, they will each only last for two encounters with Titans, after which point you will have to switch out.

Can you clarify what you mean with averaging Agility and Discipline? My initial guess is "average Agility and Discipline and add to your 2d6 roll", but I can't quite tell.

Sure. Roll both your discipline and agility and add on your respective bonuses or penalties to those rolls. Take the average of the two resulting numbers to determine what your score was on the stealth check.

E.G.

I roll 7 (+2) on agility and a 5 (+0) on discipline. I then take the average of 9 and 5, which is 7. That is my final result for the stealth check. Make sense?

Real quick question: when we spend an Advantage to improve the result of a roll, does it have to be spent before we roll, or after?

Cool. Now I'm okay. I was about to ask what the point was behind burning an Advantage to make your roll a 12, but I see that some advanced moves have benefits if you do.

Another question: if someone else rolls extraordinarily low, can I burn my advantage to save them? I know Luck lets you do it, but my advantage is specifically stated to help against escaping titans.

You will receive your disadvantage in my next update. As most of the group has become disadvantaged, I figured I'd make it a group complication.

Sorry, I missed the houserule. Your pick.

CarpeGuitarrem
2014-01-27, 02:58 PM
(I'm used to the standard procedure from other *World games--when a 7-9 gives you multiple options, the player gets to pick one. I thought you were talking about Disadvantages, as in the game term.)

nersxe
2014-01-27, 10:27 PM
Julian, can I get something reflecting that I actually did make the avoid harm roll? Since I'm automatically getting the group disadvantage, despite not getting a disadvantage on my roll? Like, I dunno, I did so well I'm no longer panicked, or something.

Julian84
2014-01-28, 12:36 AM
I would have to do the same for Valentin, then. Sorry, but you all have to make the decision on whether or not you are going to go or stay. Valentin's actions don't necessarily speak for the group.

I will give you and Valentin an advantage, though, which would put you at 1 and Valentin at 2 that you can spend to improve your roll.

Vamphyr

Hmmmm, since 3 people are trying to kill the titan at once, I'm going to try and save the Commander. I'm going to roll for Desperate Rescue. (assuming he's not dead yet)

[roll0]

Amaril
2014-01-28, 03:51 PM
So considering Valentin appears to be the current target of all three titans, I'm gonna try to distract the two new ones and create an opening for him to get away. I don't really know how something like that would work with the rules, so here's just my guess.

First, Agility to Get Into Position--not to prepare for an attack, but to get close enough to the titans while staying out of their reach.

[roll0]

Then a Discipline roll for a Desperate Rescue, because that seems to be the most similar to what I'm going for with trying to draw their attention, though hopefully I won't have to put myself in harm's way quite as much.

[roll1]
It occurs to me that none of this makes sense if Leon can't see the two new titans coming. I think it would make sense if he could, considering he rolled well enough on his Assess the Situation to see how soon they'd get there, but if not, then I'll have him do something else. Does this look okay?

While I'm a novice to this system as well, to preserve your life I'm going to rule no.

1. I'm sticking to the core concepts, and getting into position is to prepare to attack a titan. You've failed to get into position to distract titans, which negates your next roll, fortunately.

2. Desperate rescue is to save your comrade who has failed their escape death check and will die if no one comes to save them, ala Luther and the now deceased Sampson. Sampson failed his check and died along with the Sergeant. While Valentin is their target, he is currently not in any direct peril of dying and thusly you have nothing to save him from.

You can, however, simply roleplay that Leon is going to try and distract them long enough for Valentin to finish the job. For that, roll avoid harm that he is able to dodge their attacks.

Roger. Rolling for that now.

Julian84

Been doing some research in the rules to come up with a clearer system for handling disadvantages and trauma.

Trauma, as a home rule, is separate from being a disadvantage. I will not use it to lower your die rolls.

A disadvantage can be an arbitrary penalty on my part, low gas or blades, an injury, etc. If you have a die penalty disadvantage, it is at my liberty to use it when and where I see fit, much like you keep an advantage on your roster for your use.

Trauma works as described. If you are panicked, it is only the first step to becoming more mentally unstable. Eventually it will wear off if you retreat, rest, and regroup. If you become shell-shocked, however, your ability to fight has been neutralized if you encounter a titan, and your character's first thought will be to run away. This penalty can only be removed by a Leader character. As you can see, we have no one in the party who can do that. If your character becomes traumatized, they will sit down and wait to be devoured. Your only hope of survival is someone dragging you along until you reach someone who can rectify the situation.

Abandoning his gear and galvanized by sheer desperation, Cadet Valentin begins to outpace the titan, spotting his horse and whistling for it to come closer. The titan begins to bend down, eager to snatch him up, as he jumps to grab onto the side of his horse while it runs past…

He makes it, pulling himself into the saddle as the titan grasps empty air, the horse galloping with all of its might to clear the titan.

Hugo rides in with Leon and Hans’s abandoned horses, two other riders on his tail, picking up the last two cadets as the two other titans loom over the perimeter of the hamlet… They reunite with Valentin and ride away, a third of their total manpower before the attack.

They ride out onto the open plains. Helbrecht is still a few hours away… And Valentin no longer has 3DMG gear.

[The encounter is over. All panicked and shell-shocked conditions remain until a leader can be found. Posting deadline is at 8 PM EST 2/2 – No Death Penalty]
