Hello all. I am fairly new to D&D, and am currently playing a Wizard. In my researches I have found that the wizard is fairly strong, and this is evidenced pretty well in-game. However, I am not terribly interested in power.

Can you all recommend me some PrCs that are heavy on flavor/utility/interest, power not being a large factor? Thanks!

Loremaster in the DMG can be pretty fun while not incredibly strong. It's still more class abilities than a wizard and gets full casting.

It really depends on what "feel" you want to go for. Are you a specialist or a generalist. Are you looking to know as many spells as possible or are you looking at a more stealth or buff centric roll. Debuffs or divinations. Do you want to be part of an organiztion? All of those qnswered will help knock some of the others out.

It'd help to have some info on your current character, there might be something out there that matches its concept. Strictly for flavor, my favorite arcane caster prestige classes are unseen seer (Complete Mage), mage of the arcane order (Complete Arcane), wyrm wizard (Dragon Magic), frost mage (Frostburn), and swiftblade (Wizards website (https://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/prc/20070327)). Some are more powerful than others, but those are my favorites.

Complete Mage:
Wild Soul- a fey themed caster, kind of interesting if you want that
Master Specialist- Master in your specialized school if you want to go for a wizard that is more focused on his specialization

Complete Arcane:
Elemental Savant- caster focused on a single element, gets some cool features.
Fatespinner- requires profession:gambler, mage that manipulates luck and fate in the form of dice rolls
Mage of the arcane order- the quintessential guild mage prestige class that makes you part of a larger organization and gives access to more spells through it
Geometer- geometry is magic... basically uses geometric diagrams to represent and cast spells
Initiate of the sevenfold veil- (warning: this prestige class is considered very powerful) Magical rainbow (prismatic) shields for the abjuration focused mage.
Wayfarer Guide- interesting, short (3 level) prestige class focused on long distance teleportation. Could be good for a mage merchant that ferries goods using magic or as a mage smuggler that uses teleport to move illicit goods

It would help a lot to know more about your character.

Edit: If there is a specific concept you're looking for that none of these fit and your DM does not mind homebrew you could always try to work together to create a prestige class that is flavorful for your character, fits within their campaign setting, and is a power level appropriate for their game. The DMG even states in the prestige class section (page 176), "The best prestige classes for your campaign are the ones you tailor make yourself."

If you take a single level of beguiler then you can become an ultimate magus. Far and away my favorite wizard prestige class. It's not the most powerful class ever (but it's awesome for a theurge class) but whenever I make one I always feel like the king of magic.

I only built a Wizard once, because I knew that was the only I could possibly enjoy:
Wizard 5/Wild Mage 10/Fatespinner 5. Hell, it was fun.

The Master Specialist always caught my attention... if you're into fear effects you could be a Master Illusionist and throw in Nightmare Spinner. You're losing 1 caster level but we're not that huge of a crybaby... or I hope not. The feel is just right to me, and while it not might be the greatest build in history, I don't think that's what you're looking for, are you?

For an upcoming campaign I'm also toying with the idea of making a Spellwarp Sniper (Although I'll be going for Sorcerer), I think it has some nice offensive options, if you're into that.

Final note: As I already mentioned, I only played a Wizard once, and I don't plan on doing it again. I don't find them that cool and I generally shun T1. As such, I can't say I know much about them, let alone make them right, but I'm just answering your call for flavorful PrC's.

Malconvoker!

As Gnorman and I have similar tastes in the joys of planar binding, I'll go ahead and second this. Maclonvoker is far and above my favorite wizard PrC for flavor.
