Hi there, I am trying to figure out what an Artificer needs to build or have access to, in order to start large-scale safe Planar Binding? Assuming custom magic items which cast spells can be made? How does he get started binding and controlling powerful creatures? Assume the Artificer is level 10, thanks!

I have a list of a few possible useful spells...

Planar Binding from Nar Demonbinder List (what should I use to make this? A Schema? A Wondrous Item 1/day?)

Magic Circle Against Law (for the Formians and such)
Magic Circle Against Evil (for most of the evil things)
Magic Circle Against Good (for binding Archons of various types)
Enervation
Bestow Curse
Dimensional Anchor
Spectral Hand
Lesser Geas

Fouredged Sword

Magical traps. Read up on self resetting magical traps.

I know about those, but I was hoping for some detail on spells and caster level needed and such...

I don't recall seeing any guides that have the Charisma scores or Spell Resistance laid out and the minimum CL to have in order to make it impossible for them to break free, unforunately. This seems to be the best one I could find for binding on short notice. The Dragon Magazine spell Implore is probably of interest to you, as a 9th level spell and the big brother to the Planar Binding line.

If you haven't read this, it might be of interest as well, as it discusses Elder Evils that can actually be bound. (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=258840)

Edit: Just going off of Balors though, you need to reliably be able to beat Spell Resistance 28 with a caster level check and 1/2 your caster level + your charisma modifier needs to exceed 13 for a Balor to have no chance of making a charisma check to escape. (So, assuming you're ok with only winning with a 5 or better, that's a CL of 23; half of that is 11, so tack on a charisma of 14 and the Balor only wins on a natural 20 and a charisma of 16 means he can't win. Assuming you started with only a 10 in Charisma for whatever reason, a +6 item should be within your grasp by the time you're wanting to bind Balors anyway.)

Considering you want to beat its +8 Charisma in the opposed Charisma Check and you have anywhere from +0 to +6 from the type of service and reward you offer and your charisma modifier helps keep it from escaping, you'll want that buffed as high as possible, so you'll probably want some summoning regalia that solely exist to boost your charisma, charisma checks, and caster level in addition to doing what you can to debuff the bound creature's charisma checks. And a way to avoid a natural 1 on your charisma checks, I suppose.

Looking further, Pit Fiends and Solars have higher Spell Resistance at 32, though, and most of the interesting core Good outsiders have spell resistances that rival or exceed those of Balors. None of them seem to have a higher Charisma though.

Edit2: Treantmonk's Mastering the Malconvoker (http://community.wizards.com/comment/20775136#comment-20775136) has some thoughts on planar binding which are probably of interest as well.

Spells to use to help you:

Naturally - you shouldn't fight fair. Use these spells to tilt the contest in your favor:

Enchantment:2nd: Touch of idiocy (PHB): 1d6 loss to CHA
2nd: Rebuke (SC): Shaken subject (-2 Ability checks)
2rd: Mechanus Mind (SC): Gives a bunch of bonuses, but -2 to CHA checks
3rd: Suggestion (PHB): Possibly just suggest the creature agree to your terms
4th: Charm Monster (PHB): Make the creature want to be your ally
4th: Crushing Despair (PHB): -2 to ability checks
4th: Geas, Lesser (PHB): 1 day/level up to 7HD - force them to accept your terms

Transmutation:
2nd: Eagles Splendor (PHB – Abj): +4 Cha (enhancement)

Necromancy:
1st: Cause Fear: (As Rebuke)
2nd: Scare: (as cause fear or Rebuke)
2nd: Ray of Sickness: Cause sickened effect (-2 to ability checks)
4th: Bestow Curse: Use 2x. Lower CHA by 6, then lower ability checks by 4
4th: Enervation: Negative levels (-1 to ability checks per level lost)

Of course you should get the other casters in the party to help you if possible. I have a Beguiler in mine and we have an agreement for Lesser Bindings. ;)

He also mentions Moment of Prescience (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/momentOfPrescience.htm) later on for the opposed charisma check.
