[3.5]Legendary ape animal companion

Is it possible to use it as animal companion? Somehow i Got it into my head that it was but now im not so certain...

It's odd. There's some implication that these are supposed to be animal companions, but it doesn't say that they are animal companions, or list what their adjustment is. Thus, I'd have to say that you can not do this, per the rules. I suspect that the text just talks about legendary animals accompanying high level druids as a DM side thing.

Edit: Probably wouldn't be broken though. Legendary apes are listed as CR 7, and both dire bears and elephants are CR 7 as well, and the latter two creatures have a -12 adjustment, so I'd apply the same to legendary apes. I'd check to make sure there's not some unbalancing impact before just adding the creature to the list like that, but it seems reasonable enough.
