So i'm playing a lvl 6 divination specialist that will soon hit lvl 7. This means two spells for him to "learn by himself". One must be Divination, other - something useful. I was thinking Dark Tentacles.

Is there any better spell to be taken at lvl 4? Dark tentacles work on just about everything except flyers, so pretty sweet.

Any reccomndation for Divination spell is in order.

heres my (mostly english) CS (perhaps my feats may enable somthing even better)

thanks

Probably the best level 4 spell is Polymorph, since it's absolutely broken. Celerity is another good option. Enervation is a solid debuffer, and Orb of X is good for pure damage.

Polymorph highly depends on feats and optimization. (not so good for Diviner) But I like Celerity.

Polymorph take it and be done, especially as I see you have extend spell and Metamagic School Focus for it. Double-duration polymorph is nice.

Polymorph can be a powerful defensive spell, a powerful offensive spell, and a powerful utility spell, depending on your goal. It's one of the most powerful spells out there, before you really start trying to optimize it. That spell alone has entire guides dedicated to it.

As stated above, Celerity is also very good.

Here's (http://brilliantgameologists.com/boards/index.php?topic=9619.0) a list of a wizard's best spells.

The level 4 spells it has under every category (intelligence, mobility, defense, offense) are:

Polymorph
Celerity
Dimension Door
Assay Spell Resistance
Enervation
Solid Fog
Heart of Earth

EDIT:

Polymorph highly depends on feats and optimization. (not so good for Diviner)
Polymorph does not depend on feats and optimization at all (and he has some very relevant feats anyway, like Metamagic School Focus and Extend Spell). You don't optimize with polymorph, really. It's more like you pick the most useful creatures, and do whatever you want. Polymorph cheese, on the other hand, might require a little investment (Assume Supernatural Ability, for one).
As for usefulness to a diviner, Polymorph is useful to anyone who has it. Assuming that the character is an adventurer (of any sort: explorer, thief, assassin, princess rescuer, etc), he has some use for Polymorph, even if it is just to run away from fights more effectively.
But if he's a diviner with two transmutation feats, he makes at least a little use of transmutation, and polymorph can duplicate (kind of) a large number of lower-level transmutations, and do more besides.

Maybe optimization, in terms of form knowledge, but I don't see how polymorph depends on feats or any other character resources.

I'd second Polymorph. One time I prepared it in all my 4th level slots and I didn't regret it.

I'd actually take solid fog.

Polymorph is versatile and powerful, but solid fog can effectively end the encounter the round you cast it.

Black tentacles is similar, but only particularly useful if you have a party that can dish out some heavy ranged damage or has reach weapons.

Why is everyone so amazed with Polymorph? I have read some guides but besides better AC and some silly attacks that party tank dishes out much better, I really do not see the point.

Example. (http://community.wizards.com/forum/previous-editions-character-optimization/threads/1096231)

Because, with the right form, you can do almost anything with Polymorph.

Yeah well ... all this overhyped wizzy stuff fizzled at lvl 6 for me already. Wiz can do ANYTHING ... at lvl 20. And in perfect universe, unharassed by smart DM.

Assay Spell Resistance (SC) is a Divination.

Polymorph is good not only because it can give you access to tons of utility and combat abilities, but you can also cast it on noncaster party members to make them considerably more effective. Turn the Fighter or Barbarian or Warblade into a Battlerager Troll (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/iw/20070705b&page=3) for Str 28, Dex 16, Con 28, and +5 natural armor, along with a claw/claw/bite attack routine with pounce and rend. He can still use his two-handed weapon and Pounce with it, and make a secondary bite as well.

If Polymorph isn't your bag (it *does* require more paperwork and MMI-V knowledge than most spells) then I would vote for Celerity. Its even kinda-sorta thematic for a diviner, since its effect is basically "I totally saw that coming and reacted first".

As for divination - Scrying is half of the famous scry-n-die combo, though w/o teleport, the "die" bit is more like "die slowly while we meander our way in your general direction via horses or overland flight". You might want to check with your DM about it, as Scry can really annoy some DMs with its ability to quick-solve certain adventure hooks. Otherwise, I always liked Arcane Eye as a classic fallback. Scouting with no personal risk is always good.

Scrying has got a lot of utility potential as a spell, and is itself a 4th level divination. As long as you're careful not to overdo it and piss off your DM with it, it can be a very useful aid for gathering intelligence.

Scrying is the other spell I am taking because I need to have memorized at lvl 4: One Divination spell + 2 other.

Celerity really sounds good. Double Sculpted Glitterdust :P mmm
