There are a lot of ****ty commercials out there, but what about the good exceptions.

Here are some of my favorites

For a Norwegian grocery store chain. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrWwQZPZaMs)

National lottery (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_qnNLgoZhk) (I want me one of those)

And a slightly less funny but amusing one for a brand of snacks (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krmR7EqodLE) (you aren't missing anything by not understanding what they're saying, but I'll translate if anyone wants)

There was a lay's potato chips commertial that ran for the superbowl years ago.

Bunch of kids are playing ball. They loose the ball over the fence and talk about how the old man who owns that property won't give anything back once it's on his lawn. Well, on little girl has a wagon with lay's potato chips in and and suggests throwing a bag over.

And the old man throws the base ball back over. And then another from last week. Then a bike. Then a dog that one kid recognizes as his. Then a car that a separate kid recognizes as his dads. And then finally, MC hammer.

Who starts doing "You can't touch this" before the kids just trade a look, walk off camera to him, and the music stops and he starts protesting that "Hey! No, I'm serious, you can't touch this!" As they carry him back over to the fence and throw him back over.

You have to see it but it's amusing.

And then there's always the Budweiser frogs and Coke Polar bears, and the first couple of Gecko an Cavemen Commercials were funny.

loved this potential superbowl commercial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QKmhMBNVns). The ending is the best part.

Even though I didn't particularly enjoy the gameplay, the retro commercial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uAysmN8H3o) for Guild Wars 2's Super Adventure Box was hilarious.

The Old Spice commercials were really good, but I won't link those.

Dino-riders had some pretty cool commercials. Your brother eats flies, Krulos! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eqUvAhrb86Y)

One of the best adverts I and my Dad ever saw - and we onyl ever saw it once and it appears not to have made it to the internet - was an advert for Eurostar with Antoine de Caunes.

It was all in the delivery, but the text rendition is something like:

"In France, you can walk down [famous place in Paris I can't remember], drink fine wine and weep at the paintings in the Louvre."

"In England, you can walk down Oxford street, drink warm beer... and weep."

It wa done with just that right amount of French disdain for the English that me and my Dad still laugh about it now, must be nearly twenty years later.

And we saw that advert ONCE.

THAT is a good advert.

Though also, much must be made of the Tango adverts from the same sort of time period. They had a long-running series of adverts with the tag line "you know when you've been tango'd" in which upon consumption of the drink some crazy, orange-colour character would appear and commit comedy violence upon the drinker, while humorous voice-overs from some off-screen pundits commentated. Those were amusing enough itself, and went on for some time, becoming something of a pre-internet meme to us schoolchildren.

And then, the last gasp - and crowning glory of advertisement - of that campaign was a couple of adverts. The first one was someone reading a threat (in the manner of a ransom note) from a cult saying that they had figured out how to extract the "tango gene" and insert it into other food and would do so unless people drank tango.

A little while later, there was an advert in which someone was eating brussels sprouts. There was a commetary, as a donkey appeared and did something comedically to him (I can't remember what it did, but I do remember it was a donkey) and the advert concluded with "you know when you've had sprouts."

You knew it was a tango advert. You knew it.

But the really clever thing?

The advert NEVER MENTIONED TANGO.

Or even alluded to it.

Being able to advertise something without ever even mentioning the thing you're advertising? THAT is GENIUS.

I only saw this ad once, it probably got pulled for being too risque. The ad was in the US for the Canadian beer, Molson Golden, and the tag line of the push was "never miss a golden opportunity".
A girl and guy return to the girl's apartment kissing and as they enter, the girl tells him to get them beers from the fridge while she changes. The guy opens the door to the fridge where the beers are, and at the angle the camera is, you can see into living room. As he is taking the beers out, another girl comes up from the sofa where she was lying down, saying hey, get me one too. The guy has an all depressed look on his face, thinking his night just got ruined, but as the door to the fridge closes, you see a picture on the fridge, of the two girls kissing. The one eyebrow just goes up, and then the tag line appears.....

As far as superbowl commercials, I liked the investment firm with "well we just wasted ten million dollars. What are you doing with your money?"

For others, there's a couple of Subaru commercials I find charming because they could have been taken from my life. One of a kid growing up with the same car for 15 years or so, another of a dad trying to teach a pair of twins to drive. "No, let up on the clutch slowly, like I showed you." "You didn't show me dad, you showed him!"

this one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9iC2oVZS14E) always cracks me up

there's a long series of adverts ( I think about a dozen) for the (at the time) national phone company in Italy. a famous italian comedian is standing in front of a french foreign legion firing squad somewhere in North Africa. He is asked if he has a last wish.
he asks to make a phonecall.
12 ads later he's still on the phone... (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpg1aZPaqfM)
the tagline is losely translated as "a phone call can save your life"

I've always loved great commercials... The best ones are works of art, taking the limited timeframe they're given to show you something awesome.

I think my favorite commercial that I've seen is "Cog" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ve4M4UsJQo), which always blew my mind because it was done without CGI...

Two more recent ones that I like are the PS4's Greatness Awaits (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOdW1OuZ1U0) and Perfect Day (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0d9d-cdxhk) ones. The latter one really captures the feel of sitting down and playing games with a friend to me.

My very favorite ad ever is just Robert Carlyle walking and talking about the history of the product for five minutes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnSIp76CvUI). It's better than it sounds, because Robert Caryle is the very best. (Johnny Walker's ad-makers generally know what they're about better than anybody; this is just my favorite.)

Terry Tate is still one of the funniest commercials ever.

But as far as commercials I like, I have three that still get to me, each for different reasons. The first, is just something that hits me right in the giggles. It's an old car commercial that demonstrates an amusing way of handling an old bane of cars:

Ford Sportska (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLdcGSRHaaY)

The second shows just how useful TiVo could be:

Ronnie Lott is Itchy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qs7QfqYXl0)

The third is the newest, and does exactly what a commercial is supposed to do: show that you can hang out and have fun with it, all to Lou Reed.

PS4 "Perfect Day" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0d9d-cdxhk)

The on that annoys me the most at the moment is the current flora one "wrestlers by Josh" which was mildy unfunny the first time, but having been on pretty much EVERY FREAKING BLIP ADVERT for the past two-three weeks rapidly made it unbearable.

I don't mind the ads for TGWTG, that's how they make their living, after all, so it's a necessity, but by FRAG, I wish Blip would mandate some variety in what adverts it shows.

(The last one that was this tedious was for some perfume or body spray or something whose voice over was just banal rubbish. "We like to do things, it's what we do," or something equally empty and pointless.)

I recently bumped into an old dutch add for Calvé peanut butter starring the kid who became known as Petje Pitamientje because of that very add where he mispronounced the word vitamin (which leads to his nickname. it makes sense, in Dutch)
what very few people know and even less people care about is that there were 3 kids in that particular campaign who all gave variations of the same idea. I only know this because I was one of the 3 kids.
They had us each give a slightly different version of the same concept (i.e. kid eats peanut butter sandwich and tells the camera that his dad says it's healthy because it contains one or the other, to which the kid says "I just like it")
They rotated the adverts for a few weeks and then kept the one that worked best, namely the one with the aforementioned kid.
I got 2 weeks of celebrity status at school for my troubles (plus a not too shabby sum of money for 3 days worth of shooting), with kids pointing at me and saying "oh, that's him, from the telly".
Then the other kid became something of a sensation, because things didn't "go viral" in those days, the other 2 ads were dropped, and I went right back to being the shortest guy in the school. Not that I care (or cared at the time), what with being 6-7 years old.

Anyhoo, that said, I found the famous kid easily on youtube, then I found the other kid, but for some reason I never found the rendition with myself in the add. would be fun to watch, after almost 30 years.

In the commercials we hate thread talk lately has been about male bashing. However, there is a commercial on the air now that is complimentary. A mother is trying to get her baby to eat. She makes various noises waving the spoon, but the baby refuses to eat. The father enters and offers to give it a try. He makes a car noise, and the baby eats. A voice over says "Like father like son." It's a commercial for Buick.

Score one for dads!
